Sarah Boyack to step down at the election
Sarah Boyack MSP said she will step down at next year's Scottish parliamentary election.
Lothians MSP Sarah Boyack who was first elected to The Scottish Parliament in 1999 has announced she will step down at the next election.
Ms Boyack has campaigned on many issues, from bus passes to trying to rid the city of 'party flats'. In recent weeks she managed to persuade the First Minister to give her an assurance that the Scottish Government will look at the relatively small amount of cash needed to ensure that Filmhouse will be able to complete all four cinemas before opening at the end of the month.
Sarah said: 't has been the honour of my life to serve my community in the Scottish Parliament, but I've decided not to stand in next year's election.
'I am proud of what I achieved both in government & as a local MSP, from introducing free bus passes for the over 60s andnational parks, to pushing the successful campaign to secure a new eye hospital for Edinburgh.
'I am excited to campaign for Scottish Labour in the 2026 election and I will continue to support action to tackle our housing & climate emergencies after my time in Holyrood is done.
'It's been a privilege to serve the people of Lothian.'
Labour MSP, Foysol Choudhury, said: 'Sarah has been an outstanding representative for Edinburgh and the Lothians over the past 25 years. A thoughtful and determined voice in Scottish politics, she has led vital portfolios including Culture, Transport, and Net Zero, always standing up for local communities and causes with conviction. Her dedication and leadership have left a lasting impact across the country.
'Since my own election, Sarah has been a tremendous support to me always ready with guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear. In many ways, she supported me like a big sister, and I will always be grateful for the kindness and wisdom she so generously shared. She has long been a respected and influential figure in our Parliament, and her presence will be deeply missed.'
Gregor Poynton, Labour MP for Livingston, said: 'Sarah Boyack has been a tireless and passionate champion for Edinburgh, the Lothians, and for Scotland throughout her remarkable career.
'From her ground-breaking work as a Scottish Minister to her dedicated work with communities across the region, including West Lothian and the Almond Valley constituency, Sarah has always put people first.
'Her decision to stand down will not have been easy, but she can look back with real pride on a record of delivering for the Lothians in government and opposition alike. Sarah will be greatly missed at Holyrood and in our party, but I know she will continue to make an invaluable contribution to our movement and our country in the years ahead.
'I wish Sarah all the very best for the future and thank her for everything she has done for our region and for Scottish Labour.'

Next to the sickening social media snap, McElvenny gushed: 'I finally managed to meet Will Puello.' The half-blinded mercenary, from Newton Mearns, near Glasgow, is now a Russian citizen. And he has been travelling the country since leaving hospital after getting surgery on his left eye. Selfies he posted show him in the capital Moscow and also visiting Mamayev Kurgan, a huge memorial commemorating the savage Second World War Battle of Stalingrad, now called Volgograd. McElvenny, who also sustained serious shrapnel injuries after being shelled by Ukrainian forces, had previously shrugged off his plight, saying: 'St happens in conflict.' And the Kremlin squaddie, whose call sign is 'Whisky', insisted he had 'zero regrets'. The Rangers fan added: 'I came here to do what I could to support Russia. I love this country.' We told how McElvenny was hurt in a blast before being fitted with a 'fake eyeball inside what remained of my left eye'. He first hit the headlines last November after it emerged he had been injured while serving in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. Scottish brewer fighting as mercenary for Putin in Russia Previously, he had studied IT at a college in Glasgow after attending Falkland House, a residential school for boys in Fife. We revealed he once had a work experience stint as a schoolboy with the Scottish Government at offices in Atlantic Quay, Glasgow. It was in a placement tailored for pupils with additional support needs. McElvenny told The Scottish Sun on Sunday: 'It was a s**y programme by a school I should have never been in the first place — so they could get some publicity.' He travelled to Russia on a tourist visa last August, then volunteered for Putin's 1099th Motorised Rifle Regiment. The renegade Scot is being probed by cops here and faces prosecution if he returns. We told in December how McElvenny had boasted of becoming 'a citizen of the Russian Federation' after a short ceremony. He called it: 'One of the happiest moments of my life.' His new chum Puello-Mota was in the US Air Force and Massachusetts International Guard before fleeing the sex rap and landing in Russia. The ex-city councillor in Holyoke, Massachusetts, was arrested in nearby Rhode Island in 2020 after cops found explicit images of an underage girl on his phone. He reportedly told officers he thought she was 22, and only later learned she was 17. Puello-Mota was later charged with forgery, counterfeiting and obstructing justice after claiming the seedy snaps were fake. He vanished in January last year, just two days before he was scheduled to answer the charges in a Rhode Island court. US authorities said he boarded a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul before disappearing. It is understood the fugitive, who used the call-sign 'Boston', has been fighting as a volunteer mercenary alongside Russian troops in the war with Ukraine. In April last year, footage from propaganda channels showed him signing a military contract. They have spun Puello-Mota's defection as a coup for the Moscow regime.

Jobs may be lost at private school after fee VAT decision
Jobs at a prestigious Edinburgh private school may be lost as it looks to cut costs. Fettes College said the introduction of VAT on school fees was one of the reasons it took the 'difficult' decision to 'right size our staffing model'. The Scotsman reported that the school – which counts former prime minister Tony Blair among its alumni – has opened a consultation process for both teaching and operational staff in order to reduce headcount. The most recent accounts show 751 students in August 2024, down from 780 the previous year. Fees for boarders at Fettes College can cost up to £18,000 for the current academic year, inclusive of VAT. The Labour government imposed VAT on private school education and boarding fees, effective from January 1. Ministers argue that removing the VAT exemption will benefit the wider education sector, including the 94% of pupils who attend state schools. A spokesman for Fettes College said the sector is facing a 'tough time' and appealed for privacy for the staff involved. The spokesman said: 'Various factors have conspired to increase costs on all organisations and schools are not immune, particularly with the recent imposition of VAT on school fees and rise in national insurance contributions. 'Despite being financially very well managed with a strong student roll, these factors are having an impact on our costs and numbers, and we are obliged to run our operations as efficiently as possible. 'These headwinds obviously affect our families too and our parents need to be certain that we are taking the necessary decisions to run the school efficiently and to use their money effectively. 'A consultation process began in May to right size our staffing model. This difficult decision may result in some redundancies. 'We will continue to provide the highest standard of educational experience, delivering our innovative vision for the school and maintaining our position as a leader in the sector.'
