Mengal to lead long march against detention of BYC leaders
Balochistan National Party Mengal (BNP-M) chief Akhtar Mengal has announced to lead a long march on March 28 from Wadh to Quetta against the detention of BYC leaders.
Taking to his X handle, the BNP-M chief mentioned that he would lead long march, "which is against the arrest of our daughters and disrespect of our mothers and sisters."
He invited the Baloch community, including men, women, elders and youth to participate in the long march.
"It is not only the matter of our daughters' arrest but it is a question of our national dignity, our honour and out existence," tweeted Mengal, adding, 'We will not sit silent until our daughters, sisters and mothers are safe."
"Our movement is peaceful. We have come out against cruelty and persecution. We will not stop unless we get justice," maintained the BNP-M chief. "Our march from Quetta to Wadh is not a journey of steps but a travel of conscience. The time has come that we get united and raise a single voice," he added.
Earlier, several BYC protesters, including its chief organiser Mahrang Baloch, were taken into custody on Friday after protesters from Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) clashed with riots police, pelting armoured vehicles with stones and law enforcers responding by using tear gas, water cannons and blank shots on Sariab Road near the Balochistan University.
The BYC accused police of using "excessive force against protesters", including live fire, killing three people and injuring dozens. Provincial government spokesman Shahid Rind, however, refuted the allegations, stating that the protesters resorted to stone-pelting and unprovoked violence, injuring several police officers, including a female constable.
According to the government, the law enforcers acted in accordance with the law to clear a blocked national highway, while the BYC insisted that they used unnecessary force to suppress a peaceful demonstration.

Minister says M-6 to cost Rs364b
Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives has clarified that the Cost of M-6 Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway rationalized from 395 billion to 364 billion. It is to clarify that during the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) meeting held on June 18, 2025, an error was made in the cost figure of the Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway (M-6) project, which was inadvertently reported, said a release issued here on Friday. The correct revised cost of the project, as recommended to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), is Rs364 billion, not Rs395 billion as initially stated in press release.

HCSTSI irked by meagre allocation for Sukkur-Hyderabad motorway
HYDERABAD: The office-bearers of the Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders & Small Industry (HCSTSI) regretted that the federal allocated a mere Rs 15 billion in the 2025–26 PSDP for the Sukkur–Hyderabad Motorway (M-6) a strategic infrastructure project with a total estimated cost of over Rs 400 billion. They noted that at this pace, the project may not be completed even in the next decade. Such a symbolic and insufficient allocation reflects a serious lack of commitment and is tantamount to an injustice against Sindh and its vital role in Pakistan's trade and connectivity. The business community categorically rejects this approach and demands immediate and substantial funding to expedite the project. They said that although both governments have emphasised developmental objectives, digital reforms, and increased social sector allocations, there is a glaring lack of practical relief and structural support for small traders, manufacturers, and the broader business community. President HCSTSI Saleem Memon stated that initiatives like the SME Policy 2024–27, digital reforms in the FBR, the introduction of an automated refund system, and faceless audits are commendable steps. However, without timely and effective implementation, these initiatives may remain merely on paper. He cautioned that the imposition of new taxes on Cash on Delivery (COD), Digital Services and Digital Presence could severely impact small and emerging online businesses that are still in their nascent stages. Senior Vice President Ahmed Idrees Chohan pointed out the rise in withholding tax rates would further escalate the operational costs for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Moreover, the federal budget failed to announce any relief in industrial electricity tariffs, time-of-use rates, or subsidies for SMEs, which is a significant shortcoming considering the ongoing energy cost burden. Vice President Shan Sehgal expressed concern over the increase in carbon levy, particularly the hike from 2.5% to 5% on furnace oil, stating that many small industries are still in transition and not yet fully equipped with renewable energy alternatives such as solar systems. Water, sanitation network expanded to 10 cities
In a move to improve clean drinking water and sewerage services across Punjab, the Housing Department has approved the establishment of 10 new Water and Sanitation Agencies (WASAs) in various cities. These include Hafizabad, Jhang, Sialkot, Jhelum, Rahim Yar Khan, Sahiwal, Okara, Bahawalpur, Sargodha and Dera Ghazi Khan. The relevant authorities have been instructed to appoint managing directors for the newly proposed agencies. The announcement came during an emergency visit by Punjab Secretary for Housing, Urban Development & Public Health Engineering Noorul Amin Mengal to the WASA headquarters in Faisalabad. He chaired a high-level meeting attended by FDA Director General Muhammad Asif Chaudhry, WASA Managing Director Aamir Aziz, DG PHA Dilawar Khan, and other officials, where an extensive review of ongoing development schemes, sewerage improvements, and clean water supply projects was conducted. Mengal emphasised the Punjab chief minister's personal commitment to ensuring the availability of clean drinking water and modern sewerage infrastructure for the public. He said projects worth Rs150 billion are currently being executed under WASA's supervision and assured that their progress and quality will be closely monitored by the department. To ensure transparency and high standards, Quality Assurance Committees are being formed and special monitoring cells will oversee the technical aspects of all ongoing projects. Mengal issued directives to prioritise public convenience during development work by avoiding unnecessary excavations and ensuring prompt restoration of affected areas to minimise disruption to daily life. The housing secretary made it clear that negligence, malpractice, or delays in project execution will not be tolerated and that strict departmental action will be taken against those found responsible.
