South Korea's trade surplus with US will shrink, exporters say
SEOUL: South Korea's record-high trade surpluses with the United States will gradually narrow as companies continue to invest in the US market, the country's biggest exporter group said on Thursday.
"There is a high possibility of trade imbalances between South Korea and the United States gradually easing on continued and prolonged investments in the country," Korea International Trade Association (KITA) said in a report.
In 2024, 46.8 per cent of US imports from South Korea were intermediate goods shipped to the country for direct investments, according to KITA.
South Korea earned a surplus of US$55.6 billion from trade with the US in 2024, up 25 per cent from 2023 and a record high, led by rising car exports, according to Korea Customs Service data.
Seoul has been engaging with Washington since they agreed in mid-April to craft a trade package lowering tariffs by July 8. In the latest working-level discussion last week, Washington demanded that Seoul resolve the large trade imbalance between the two countries, according to local media reports.
KITA said South Korea's rising trade surpluses did not result from unfair trade practices. Of the increase of US$36.9 billion in the last three years, US$27.7 billion was related to substitutions of Chinese products within US supply chains, increases in US demand and structural changes in US imports, the business group said.

In the past two fiscal years through 2024, Bangladesh, Djibouti, Fiji, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia and the Philippines were recipients of the assistance programme. In May, Japan gave the Fiji navy a rescue boat and surveillance equipment, in its first delivery under the OSA framework. Anti-dumping duties on CRC imports from China, Japan to be maintained
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has completed the administrative (sunset) review and reached a final affirmative determination to continue imposing anti-dumping duties on imports of cold rolled coils (CRC) of iron or non-alloy steel over 1,300mm in width from China and Japan. This excludes CRCs used for automotive and transformer finwall applications or tin mill black plate. The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) said the rate of anti-dumping duties for Chinese companies are Angang Steel Company Limited at 4.82%, Maanshan Iron and Steel Co Ltd (4.76%), Shougang Jingtang United Iron & Steel Co Ltd (8.74%) and other producers and exporters (26.38%). 'The rate of anti-dumping duties for Japanese producers and exporters will be imposed at 26.39%. The Customs Department will enforce the collection of the duties on the imports of the subject merchandise for a period of five years, effective from June 23, 2025, to June 22, 2030,' it said yesterday, Bernama reported. The ministry also noted that the government has made a negative final determination to terminate the imposition of anti-dumping duties and the investigations on the imports of the subject merchandise originating or exported from South Korea and Vietnam, effective from June 23.

Duisburg launches return leg of ASEAN Express to boost Europe-Asia trade
DUISBURG, Germany, June 21 (Xinhua) -- A freight train loaded with maternal and infant products, cosmetics, and medical supplies departed Duisburg, Germany on Saturday, marking the launch of the return leg of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Express service. The departure marks the start of bidirectional operations for a new trade corridor linking Europe and Asia. The train is expected to arrive in ASEAN countries in 19 days, traveling via Chongqing, an inland municipality in southwest China. The ASEAN Express has achieved "seamless connection" between two vital international trade routes of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and the China-Europe freight train service. Its transportation efficiency has significantly improved compared with traditional sea routes. "As the service continues to be optimized and expanded, more enterprises are expected to benefit from this efficient and reliable logistics solution, ushering in a new era of trade," said Liu Taiping, chairman of New Land-Sea Corridor Operation Co., Ltd. Li Yan, deputy director of Chongqing port and logistics office, said the ASEAN Express, as an extension of the China-Europe freight train service, is poised to become an efficient, green, and stable economic and trade corridor connecting the two continents. Following the departure ceremony, a promotional event for the ASEAN Express was held, during which representatives from Chinese and German enterprises exchanged views on corridor cooperation and supporting services.
