New Hui Fen sets sights on PWBA Player of the Year award after clinching second title in three days
SINGAPORE – After securing back-to-back titles on the Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour, Singapore's New Hui Fen has set her sights on an even bigger prize – the circuit's Player of the Year award.
The national bowler is now the front runner for the accolade, having captured her second title of 2025 on June 2 by defeating Latvia's Diana Zavjalova 235-187 in the title match of the Rock 'n' Roll Open.
Her latest triumph at Yorktown Lanes in Ohio marked her second win in three days at the same venue. The 33-year-old had clinched the BowlTV Open on May 31.
In an interview with the PWBA, she said: 'Winning Player of the Year is something I've dreamt of.
'Last year, I was close but (Sin Li) Jane bowled so well, but maybe this year is my year.'
Malaysia's Sin became the first Asian to win the accolade in 2024 after claiming four titles, including two Majors.
New was among the 16 bowlers who qualified for the match-play round after placing fifth in qualifying with 2,739 pinfalls.
In the best-of-five match-play bracket, she opened with a 3-2 win against Sweden's Anneli Blomqvist in the round-of-16, followed by a 3-0 sweep of American Jillian Martin.
In the semi-finals, she edged past Jordan Snodgrass of the United States 245-244 to reach the championship match against Zavjalova, who had earlier defeated Julia Bond 267-234.
Both bowlers were on even footing through five frames in the final, but the Singaporean reeled off four consecutive strikes from frames six to nine to finish with 235 to Zavjalova's 187 and earn the US$10,000 (S$12,900) top prize.
Fittingly, New flashed a rock hand sign as she posed with the trophy after her win. She said: 'I'm very happy and grateful for this back-to-back win. I'm happy that my hard work is paying off and grateful to have this opportunity to perform at my best.
'It's been years of intentional training and showing up every day at the gym and on the lanes.'
Next on the calendar for Singapore's bowlers is the June 5-7 PWBA Waterloo Open and the June 10-17 US Women's Open, before they return home.
They will be back in the US for the Aug 5-12 2025 PWBA Tour Championship Week, which includes three events, culminating in the season-ending PWBA Tour Championship.
New, the PWBA 2016 Rookie of the Year, is hoping to continue the form that has brought her tally of PWBA titles to four in a decorated career that also includes medals on the world stage.
On what keeps her going, she said: 'I treat my bowling as a game and I'm a character in that game of bowling – I'm trying my best to level up in every aspect of the game, so that I can be consistent at every competition.'
With New's two wins and Shayna Ng's victory at the Topeka Open in May, Singapore has now captured trophies in three of the five PWBA National Tour events so far.
Singapore Bowling Federation president Valerie Teo said: 'Hui Fen's latest victory at the PWBA Rock 'n' Roll Open is another incredible testament to her resilience and world-class ability, and it caps off what has been a phenomenal run for Singapore bowling.
'We're incredibly proud of what our bowlers have achieved so far this season. With two wins under her belt already, Hui Fen is currently the front runner for the PWBA Player of the Year award through five events.
'While there's still a long way to go, it's exciting to see her in such strong form and in the running for one of the tour's highest honours .'

Medvedev outlasts Zverev to reach Halle final
Daniil Medvedev reached his first ATP Tour final for 15 months as he outlasted Germany's world number three Alexander Zverev 7-6(3) 6-7(1) 6-4 at the Halle Open on Saturday. The Russian former world number one could have spared himself some overtime had he not let three match points slip in the second set, but he eventually got the job done in just under three hours. He needed treatment for a nosebleed at 4-4 in an intense first set but was gifted the first-set tiebreaker as Zverev offered up a clutch of unforced errors. Zverev was broken at the start of the second set but clawed his way back and then saved three match points when serving at 5-6 before holding serve in an extended 12th game to set up a tiebreak in which he played some precise tennis. Medvedev quickly regrouped though and was the dominant player in the decider. Whatever the outcome of the final, he will return to the world's top 10 on Monday. PHOTO: AFP Explainer: Breaking down the Buss family's US$10 billion sale of Los Angeles Lakers The Buss family, architects of 11 National Basketball Association (NBA) championships, is poised to relinquish their four-decade reign over the Los Angeles Lakers, with ESPN reporting they are entering an agreement to sell a majority stake in basketball's most glamorous franchise. The following is the breakdown of the deal: WHAT IS AT STAKE? Lakers minority owner Mark Walter is set to take majority ownership in a deal valuing the Lakers at about US$10 billion (S$12.84 billion), making it the most expensive United States sports team valuation in history. The deal will end family control of the Lakers. The Buss family will retain a minority share of just over 15 per cent for a period of time after the deal, ESPN reported, bringing to a close its stewardship of a franchise that became synonymous with Hollywood allure and championship excellence. Reuters could not immediately ascertain what Walter's new stake in the team would be. He purchased a minority stake in the Lakers with Todd Boehly in 2021. The previous record for biggest sports deal was held by the Boston Celtics, who agreed in March to be sold for US$6.1 billion. WHO ARE THE LAKERS? The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in National Basketball Association history. The team was valued at US$7.1 billion by Forbes in 2024, behind only the Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks in the NBA. They are the second-most successful NBA team with 17 championships. The Celtics have 18. Jerry Buss, who bought the Lakers for US$67.5 million in 1979, transformed them into one of the most well-known franchises in professional sports. The team won five championships during the celebrated "Showtime" era of the 1980s. The Lakers have LeBron James, arguably the league's biggest star, on their roster. They also snapped up Slovenian Luka Doncic in a high-profile trade with the Dallas Mavericks in February. WHO IS MARK WALTER? Walter is a 65-year-old American billionaire businessman who is CEO and chairman of holding company TWG Global. He is also CEO of investment firm Guggenheim Partners. Walter, whose net worth is listed as US$6.1 billion by Forbes, has owned the LA Dodgers baseball team since 2012. He is adding the Lakers to a sporting portfolio that includes stakes in the Cadillac Formula One team, the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks and English Premier League football club Chelsea. WHO ARE THE BUSS FAMILY? Jerry Buss's 66 per cent stake in the Lakers was passed on to his six children via a family trust after his death in 2013. Buss died at the age of 80 due to kidney failure. His daughter, Jeanie, took over as principal owner after his death and is set to continue as team governor, maintaining a family connection to the purple-and-gold empire her father built. WHICH ARE SOME OTHER NOTABLE SPORTS DEALS? The Celtics set the previous benchmark in NBA sale valuations after agreeing to a US$6.1 billion sale to a group headed by private equity firm Symphony Technology Group co-founder William Chisholm in March. The National Football League's (NFL) Washington Commanders sold for US$6.05 billion in July 2023, in a deal that, at the time, was the biggest for a North American sports franchise. Also in 2023, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe finalised a deal to acquire a minority stake in Manchester United that valued the English football club at US$6.3 billion. In 2022, former owner Roman Abramovich sold Chelsea to a consortium led by Boehly that included Walter, for about US$3.2 billion. WHEN IS THE LEAGUE EXPECTED TO FINALISE THE SALE? Final approval of the sale could take several months. The Celtics' sale has yet to receive final approval from the NBA Board of Governors.
