Two popular Chevrolet models will move to U.S. plants from Mexico.
The plan is to produce gas-powered full-size SUVs and light duty pickup trucks at Orion Assembly in Michigan early 2027.
GM also is retooling its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas and the Spring Hill Manufacturing plant in Tennessee.
General Motors will invest $4 billion in three U.S. manufacturing sites over the next two years to prepare for changing production slated to begin in 2027. Two popular Chevrolet models also will move to U.S. plants from Mexico as part of the shift.
As part of the announcement on June 10, GM also confirmed reports that it has no current plans to produce electric vehicles at its Michigan Orion Assembly plant. Instead, the company will produce gas-only vehicles at the plant after its retooling.
The Chevrolet Blazer also is slated for a refresh, the company spokesman confirmed, and its production will move from Mexico to the United States by 2027.
The new investment will not reduce any production in North America, according to a company spokesman, and does not include previously announced U.S. investment as part of its 2023 UAW labor contract.
Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at Telemetry, said his interpretation of the news is that GM's production changes come as a response to President Donald Trump's tariffs. Trump imposed 25% tariffs on imported vehicles and 25% tariffs on many auto parts imported into the United States earlier this year.
On May 1, GM lowered its 2025 guidance, saying tariff expenses are likely to eat up to $5 billion in previously expected profits.
'They won't say it outright, but it's almost certain that they're moving production from Mexico to the U.S.,' he said, 'You're looking at between 400,000 and 500,000 more units in the U.S. They're not expecting to sell that many more vehicles in the U.S.'

Orion Assembly changes
GM planned to relaunch Orion Assembly after a $4 billion retooling and expansion to assemble the Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV later this year for late 2025 model year production, but that was pushed ahead six months to mid-2026.
Previously, Orion made the Chevrolet Sonic and Bolt EVs, though production of those vehicles ended there last year.
The plan now is to produce gas-powered full-size SUVs and light duty pickup trucks at Orion in early 2027, according to the company.
Also by then, GM's Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck will serve as the dedicated assembly location for the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ and GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV.
Praise for production changes
GM's production announcement was met with near-universal praise from the White House, the United Auto Workers union and Michigan politicians on both sides of the aisle.
'No president has taken a stronger interest in reviving America's once-great auto industry than President Trump, and GM's investment announcement builds on trillions of dollars in other historic investment commitments to Make in America,' White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement. 'The One, Big, Beautiful Bill's tax cuts, pro-growth policies, and full expensing of equipment investments will only turbocharge this resurgence under President Trump.'
Trump's 'Big, Beautiful' tax bill proposes, among other things, to kill the electric vehicle tax credit by the end of this year and penalize hybrid and electric vehicle owners with annual fees to compensate for lost revenue customers would have paid in gas tax.
UAW President Shawn Fain said in a statement that the union had said for months that the auto industry could utilize excess capacity at U.S. auto plants and invest billions into factories, communities and American autoworkers.
'While other companies drag their feet, GM is showing that strategic auto tariffs work with a massive $4 billion investment that will create thousands of good paying union jobs. Thanks to the dedication of our members, who have been speaking up about the damage done by bad trade deals, we are finally starting to see real progress,' he said. 'It's time to invest in blue collar America, and GM is showing how it's done. This is just the beginning.'
U.S. Rep. and House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain, R-Bruce Township, said in a statement GM's decision follows a series of economic moves made by the Trump administration aimed at reversing decades of industrial decline. The Orion Assembly plant is located in McClain's congressional district.
'This investment is a game-changer for our district and a big win for hard-working Michiganders,' McClain said. 'For months, we have said the president's efforts would pay off and more companies would invest in America again. Putting our country first, for the first time in years, is working. This investment is proof. I'm proud to have helped deliver this major win for our community.'
U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Ann Arbor, also praised the decision.
'This is good news for Michigan's workers and our role as a leader in the global auto industry. In order to remain a leader, we must be producing a robust product line that consumers want, including electric vehicles,' she said in a statement. 'The global market wants EVs. This investment demonstrates the auto industry's commitment to this leadership, and U.S. policy must support it. I will continue to work with every stakeholder to invest in manufacturing here at home, bring back jobs from overseas, and support the workers and communities who have built their lives around the auto industry."
GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement: 'We believe the future of transportation will be driven by American innovation and manufacturing expertise. Today's announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to build vehicles in the U.S. and to support American jobs. We're focused on giving customers choice and offering a broad range of vehicles they love.'
Other investments
GM also is retooling its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City and the Spring Hill Manufacturing plant in Tennessee.
Fairfax Assembly will produce the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox beginning in mid-2027, and will start producing the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV by the end of 2025.
The Mexico-assembled Equinox is one of GM's top-selling vehicles and the No. 1 single nameplate that GM produces in Mexico for the U.S. market. GM exported 257,000 gas and electric Equinox vehicles from its Ramos plant across 2024, Abuelsamid said.
GM said it plans to announce further investments to Fairfax for electric vehicles in the future.
As for Spring Hill, in addition to bringing the Chevrolet Blazer production up from Mexico, the plant will also produce the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq EVs, as well as the Cadillac XT5.
Once these changes come into play, Abuelsamid said, vehicle costs may rise.
'GM will probably increase prices once they increase U.S. production,' he said. 'That's why these vehicles were built in Mexico in the first place.'

US leading indicators slip in May, triggering recession signal, Conference Board says
(Reuters) -A measure of future U.S. economic activity fell in May for the sixth straight month and triggered a recession signal, held down by consumer pessimism, weak new orders for manufactured goods, an uptick in jobless benefits claims and a drop in building permit applications. The Conference Board's Leading Economic Index fell by 0.1% to 99.0 last month after a downwardly revised 1.4% drop in April, which was the largest decline in the index since the spring of 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The decline matched the consensus expectation among economists polled by Reuters. A rebound in stock prices in May following a series of temporary roll backs in President Donald Trump's wave of tariffs was the main positive contributor to the index, the Conference Board's senior manager for business cycle indicators, Justyna Zabinska-La Monica, said in a statement. But that was slightly outweighed by those other factors. "With the substantial negatively revised drop in April and the further downtick in May, the six-month growth rate of the Index has become more negative, triggering the recession signal," she said. "The Conference Board does not anticipate recession, but we do expect a significant slowdown in economic growth in 2025 compared to 2024, with real GDP growing at 1.6% this year and persistent tariff effects potentially leading to further deceleration in 2026." The Leading Index had signaled a recession a few years ago during the peak of the inflation wave that followed the pandemic, but the economy never slid into contraction. Shell boss warns of ‘huge impact on trade' if Israel-Iran conflict escalates
An escalation in the Middle East conflict could have a 'huge impact on global trade', the boss of the oil company Shell has warned, as Donald Trump suggested the US could enter the air war between Israel and Iran. Shell, one of the biggest traders of oil and natural gas in the world, said it had contingency plans in case the conflict disrupted flows from the region. There is a risk that a blockage in the strait of Hormuz could shock the energy market. Speaking at an energy conference in Tokyo, Wael Sawan, the chief executive of Shell, said: 'If that artery is blocked, for whatever reason, it has a huge impact on global trade… We have plans in the eventuality that things deteriorate.' About a quarter of the world's oil trade passes through the strait of Hormuz, which links the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. Oil prices have risen over the last week as the conflict has escalated. On Thursday, Brent crude rose nearly 1% to more than $77 (£57) a barrel. Interactive 'What is particularly challenging right now is some of the jamming that's happening,' said Sawan, referring to the interference in navigation signals in and around the Persian Gulf. The growing risk in the area has also more than doubled the price to charter large oil tankers through the strait of Hormuz, according to figures from the data and analytics firm Clarksons Research, reported by the Financial Times. The daily price to charter a very large crude carrier, which is capable of carrying 2m barrels of oil, from the Gulf to China rose from $19,998 two days before Israel's attack on Iran last week to $47,609 on Wednesday. The sharp rise in costs far outpaces the 12% increase in the wider Baltic Dirty Tanker index over the same period. The index tracks crude oil tanker rates across the world. Meanwhile, global stocks slipped slightly on Thursday, as investors bought assets that are typically more stable during volatile periods such as gold and the US dollar. The precious metal ticked up 0.1% to $3,372.36 an ounce, while the dollar rose against the euro, as well as the Australian and New Zealand dollars. Trump said on Wednesday he had not yet made a final decision about the US entering the war. 'I may do it, I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I'm going to do,' the president said. Kyle Rodda, a senior financial markets analyst at said: 'Market participants remain edgy and uncertain. Speculation remains rife – fed probably strategically by the Trump administration – that the US will intervene, something that would mark a material escalation and could invite direct retaliation against the US by Iran.' 'Such a scenario would raise the risk of a greater regional conflict, with implications for global energy supply and probably economic growth,' Rodda added. Amazon (AMZN), one of the world's largest e-commerce and cloud computing companies, is reportedly exploring its own entry into this space by launching a stablecoin for online transactions. This move could have enormous implications, potentially allowing Amazon to sidestep billions in fees currently paid to credit card networks and banks, while simultaneously creating an entirely new profit stream through earned interest on customer funds held in stablecoins. However, as Trump paused or lowered the majority of his levies, the stock began trending upward, forming higher highs and higher lows, and most recently holding near the $210 support level. AMZN stock remains highly sensitive to tariff headlines, which is unsurprising given its massive e-commerce business, where tariffs can squeeze both revenue and profit margins. The crypto environment is heating up in 2025 amid Trump's pro-crypto stance. Trump said he's proud to be regarded as the first 'crypto president' during a pre-recorded address at Coinbase's State of Crypto Summit last week. Trump's enthusiastic embrace of crypto became evident last summer at a Bitcoin conference, where he vowed to make the U.S. the 'crypto capital of the world' — a notable reversal from his 2021 stance, when he dismissed Bitcoin as a 'scam.' The shift helped his campaign, drawing in millions of dollars in donations from the crypto industry. In March, Trump delivered on one of his campaign promises by signing an executive order to establish a U.S. strategic Bitcoin reserve. On Tuesday, the Senate passed the GENIUS Act, a landmark bill that, for the first time, sets federal guidelines for U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoins and establishes a regulated framework allowing private companies to issue digital dollars with federal approval. The bill still faces hurdles in the Republican-controlled House, but its passage in the Senate marks a pivotal moment, reinforcing a more favorable environment for crypto in the U.S. Trump earlier stated that once the Genius Act is passed, he intends to create 'clear and simple market frameworks that will allow America to dominate the future of crypto and bitcoin.' Meanwhile, Trump and his family have actively ventured into the cryptocurrency space, making moves into stablecoins, Bitcoin mining, and even launching a memecoin. For example, Trump launched his own memecoin and a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin through his family's World Liberty Financial project. Also, Trump's sons, Eric and Donald Jr., are behind a crypto mining venture, American Bitcoin, which intends to list on the Nasdaq and aims to become one of the world's largest and most efficient Bitcoin mining operations based in the U.S. It's also worth mentioning the recent high-profile initial public offering (IPO) of Circle Internet Group (CRCL), the company behind one of the world's largest stablecoins, USDC. The company's IPO surpassed all expectations, pricing above an increased range and attracting more than 20 times the number of available shares in orders, according to Bloomberg News. Circle's $1.1 billion IPO stands out as the most prominent crypto debut since Coinbase Global's direct listing in 2021 and reflects the increasingly favorable climate for crypto in the U.S. The momentum surrounding the GENIUS Act has reignited interest in stablecoins. Last Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that some of the largest U.S. merchants are exploring the use or issuance of stablecoins, potentially moving a significant volume of cash and card transactions outside the traditional financial system. According to the report, Amazon, Walmart (WMT), and other multinational giants have recently considered issuing their own stablecoins in the U.S. The move could potentially cut the billions of dollars retail giants spend on credit transaction fees. For context, stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency, running on a blockchain, that are typically pegged to a stable asset, most commonly the U.S. dollar. They are also backed by cash and cash-equivalent assets, such as U.S. Treasuries. This aims to avoid the volatility commonly seen in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Stablecoins are the latest opportunity in big retail's long-running effort to eliminate billions in costs and days of delays associated with payment transactions. It's important to note that credit and debit card payments come with interchange fees — charges merchants pay to the card issuer for processing transactions. For instance, Mizuho estimated that Walmart pays just under 2% in interchange fees on card-based transactions, amounting to billions in annual costs. With that, using stablecoins for payments would undoubtedly benefit retailers like Amazon by boosting their margins and profits. Retailers are exploring two potential ways to implement stablecoins, according to the WSJ, which outlined Walmart and Amazon's plans. They could either begin accepting existing stablecoins, like Tether's USDT, Circle's USDC, or PayPal's (PYPL) PYUSD, or issue their own — either individually or collaboratively. If retailers issued their own stablecoins, it could open up an entirely new source of profit. Similar to current issuers, they would retain the interest earned on all funds deposited to purchase their stablecoins. Meanwhile, Amazon remains in the early phases of exploring stablecoin options, a source told the WSJ. Some of the discussion has centered on the possibility of Amazon issuing its own stablecoin for online transactions. It's also worth noting that any efforts by Amazon, Walmart, and other global retailers to launch their own blockchain-based payment systems could pose a threat to credit card issuers and the broader banking industry. Card companies like Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA) would simply lose out on interchange fees, directly affecting their revenues. However, since banks that issue the cards receive the bulk of the card fees, they would be affected as well. Moreover, money held in retail stablecoins or various apps is money that banks no longer have available to issue loans and generate profits. Another interesting point is that retailers may struggle to persuade consumers to adopt stablecoins unless they offer some form of incentive. According to Mizuho Securities analyst Dan Dolev, if those incentives become too costly, they could outweigh any interchange fee savings for the retailer. Also, analysts at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods noted that merchants have previously tried to launch their own payment systems, such as mobile wallets, but these efforts have struggled to gain traction. Wall Street analysts are highly optimistic about Amazon. Of the 53 analysts covering the stock, 45 rate it a 'Strong Buy,' six assign a 'Moderate Buy' rating, and just two recommend holding. This translates to a consensus rating of 'Strong Buy.' The mean price target for AMZN stock is $241.73, implying 14.7% upside from current levels. Analysts tracking the company foresee a 12.15% year-over-year increase in its GAAP EPS to $6.20 for fiscal 2025, with revenue expected to grow 8.94% year-over-year to $694.99 billion. Amazon's leadership in cloud computing and e-commerce retail positions the company well for long-term growth. The company continues to invest heavily in AI and cloud infrastructure, which is expected to support its long-term growth. With a forward earnings multiple of 34.5x, I consider AMZN's valuation to be more than justified. It might seem high if you see Amazon solely as a retailer, but it's reasonable given the strength of its cloud and AI business. The potential launch of its own stablecoin for online transactions could be a big win for Amazon. In theory, it could cut billions in costs while creating an entirely new profit stream, enabling Amazon to earn interest on all funds deposited to buy its stablecoin. However, it's also important to note that encouraging consumers to adopt stablecoins may prove challenging and would likely require offering some sort of incentive. If those incentives become too expensive, they could offset any potential benefits from switching to stablecoin payments. Given that all of this is still in its early stages, I don't believe it yet forms a solid investment thesis for AMZN. However, it doesn't change the fact that AMZN remains a high-quality stock with strong long-term growth potential. I believe this member of the Magnificent Seven belongs in every investor's portfolio, and for me, the best strategy is to take advantage of any dips in its stock price.
