Severe Tropical Storm Wutip: Hong Kong to issue T3 signal between 12pm and 2pm

Hong Kong's weather forecaster will issue the No 3 typhoon warning signal between 12pm and 2pm on Saturday, as strong winds from a severe tropical storm are expected to intensify later.
Severe Tropical Storm Wutip, the Cantonese word for 'butterfly', has entered within 800km (497 miles) of Hong Kong, but it is expected to make landfall later in the day.
At 8am, it was estimated to be about 590km west-southwest of the city and is forecast to move northeast at about 18km/h (11mph), across Beibu Wan and towards Leizhou Peninsula.
'Its outer circulation brought squally showers to the coast of Guangdong. Wutip is expected to make landfall over Leizhou Peninsula [on Saturday]. It will then move across the vicinity of the boundary of Guangdong-Guangxi,' the Hong Kong Observatory said.
'The strong winds associated with Wutip are expected to gradually prevail over the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. Winds will strengthen over the territory later [on Saturday], and up to gale force on high ground,' the forecaster warned, adding it would issue the No 3 signal between noon and 2pm.

Vast areas of Zhaoqing city in Guangdong were submerged, with floodwaters inundating shopfronts and covering roads, footage from broadcaster CCTV showed. Rescuers pushed stranded cars out of the water and used dinghies to transport residents to safety. Other images showed rescuers wading through water while carrying stranded people on their backs. The flooding had affected 183,000 residents in Zhaoqing's Huaiji county, with the city mobilising more than 10,000 rescue personnel, Xinhua News Agency reported. The flooding affected much of Guangdong province and the neighbouring Guangxi region. Footage from CCTV filmed on Tuesday showed rescuers in Guangxi dragging a rubber boat crammed with people through knee-deep water as heavy rain continued to fall. Typhoon Wutip, the nation's first typhoon of the year, made landfall on the island province of Hainan last Friday, before moving to Guangdong on Saturday. It brought winds gusting up to 128 kilometres per hour before weakening to a severe tropical storm at the weekend. Even as its severity subsided, the storm has continued to bring heavy rain to southern China and Zhejiang province, where authorities issued an emergency response notice for flooding risks. Rainfall in some areas had surpassed 100 millimetres, according to the China Meteorological Administration. Authorities in Vietnam said on Monday that seven people had died in the country after heavy rains and flooding caused by Wutip. (AFP)

Hong Kong hiker, 69, dies after collapsing on Wilson Trail

A 69-year-old hiker has died after collapsing on Hong Kong's Wilson Trail in Tsz Wan Shan. Advertisement The man, surnamed Ho, was found lying unconscious by hikers at around 9.13am on Wednesday on Section 5 of the trail. According to police, paramedics found Ho unresponsive. The Government Flying Service then dispatched a helicopter to airlift him to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10.59am despite resuscitation efforts. Temperatures on Wednesday ranged between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius (82.4 and 86.9 Fahrenheit), accompanied by high humidity levels between 70 and 90 per cent. The weather is mainly cloudy with isolated showers, as well as hot and sunny intervals in the afternoon. The about 8km long Wilson Trail Section 5 begins at Lion Pavilion on Sha Tin Pass Road, between Lion Rock and Tsz Wan Shan. The trail first passes through Shap Yi Wat and then connects to the aqueduct of Beacon Hill before ending at the Tai Po Road exit. Advertisement
