Dermot Weld hoping for Curragh rain ahead of 1,000 Guineas

RTÉ News22-05-2025

Dermot Weld would prefer to see some rain at the Curragh ahead of Swelter's bid for glory in Sunday's Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas.
The Juddmonte-owned filly is unbeaten in two starts, on both good and good to yielding ground, but Weld thinks she would be even better on soft going and would prefer to have her favoured conditions for the mile Classic.
Speaking after the victory of the promising Pierre Royal at Gowran on Wednesday evening, Weld said: "She's in good order. She's very effective on soft ground and everything back from that she'll be less effective on.
"That's the concern but there is a chance of some rain and we'll be hopeful.
"I walked the track at the Curragh (on Wednesday) and it's fast. It's not their fault as we only got two millimetres of rain.
"They'll be watering it and will get it right. There is a good team there."
The latest ground update issued by Curragh officials on Thursday morning on X read: "Following a dry, warm day and watering, the Curragh remains good, good to firm in places (selective watering).
Temperatures in early 20s today, cooler tomorrow with possibility of 2-3mm (approx) of rain in the afternoon and 10-12mm (approx) in total through the weekend."

Huge Lazzat update after Royal Ascot hero almost KO'd helpless man – as trainer admits ‘freak' mistake caused meltdown

TRAINER Jerome Reynier has issued a big update on awesome Royal Ascot winner Lazzat - who almost kicked a man's head off after the race. Lazzat had just beaten Japanese challenger Satono Reve to win the Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes last Saturday 3 Winning jockey James Doyle was flung from Lazzat moments after winning the big race at Royal Ascot last Saturday Credit: The Mega Agency 3 He then came close to drop-kicking a groundsworker in the head 3 It was a terrifying near miss for the man, who fell through the railing like a drunk boxer First he dumped jockey James Doyle to the turf then galloped loose over the track. Moments later, ITV footage showed one poor helpless soul who tried to get him to calm down coming just inches from being kicked in the head. There were fears the worrying scenes could lead to Doyle being disqualified as he was unable to weigh in without his saddle - which was still strapped to Lazzat's back. But fortunately there was a happy ending for the Wathnan-owned horse, who is now back home in Reynier's French yard and doing well. Speaking to Sky Sports Racing, the trainer admitted Lazzat's meltdown was all his fault. It was Reynier who stood in front of the sprinter with the winner's cloth - and it was like waving a red rag to a bull. He said: "The horse is all good, nice and settled and he doesn't even seem tired. He's ready for more. "Me and James were laughing about it. It's my fault with the winning sheet. I came too close. I should've gone round the side. Most read in Horse Racing "But we were so happy and it was a freak (accident). "If I could have jumped on the horse with James I would have done! "But it was an amazing moment to share with all my friends on the day." Lazzat was made 5-2 favourite for the July Cup on the back of his 6f win at Ascot. But Reynier confirmed his next start will not be until August when he aims to defend his Maurice de Gheest crown in Deauville. He said: "This race will suit him well once again and obviously he will be the favourite. "On the European racing programme - he doesn'y mind the ground so the plan would be to stick with Group 1 sprinting races and Haydock and Ascot could be the next targets for him. "But we are focused on August 10 for Deauville and the Maurice de Gheest. "He is young and they often get better with age. "Maybe the best is yet to come." 'A giant of the game': Willie Mullins adds his tribute to Kevin Prendergast

Willie Mullins has added his tribute to Kevin Prendergast, following the multiple Classic-winning trainer's death on Friday at the age of 92. Prendergast - son of the legendary Paddy 'Darkie' Prendergast - was a hugely popular and respected figure, landing the last of his Classic successes with Awtaad in the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2016. "I was sorry to hear about Kevin. He was a tremendous trainer, who always had a word for you," said Mullins, the reigning champion National Hunt trainer in Ireland and Britain. "He had an opinion on everything and that opinion was valued by people because he'd been through it, he knew the good days and he knew the bad days. "He was a tremendous character who will be sadly missed. A proper giant of the game, he did the hard work and he knew everything about the game." Former trainer Mick Halford, who now represents Joseph O'Brien on racecourses, said: "Kevin was a master on the Curragh when I started. He was somebody I always looked up to, his horses were always a credit to him. "He was a great man to talk to, a great man for advice, and for a bit of slagging! "He was a lovely man and I had a lot of time for him, and he will be sadly missed on the Curragh. "He led a full life, he was a great example to us all."
