Siya Kolisi opens up about ‘special' Springbok environment: ‘A proper family'
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is enjoying the special environment in the camp ahead of the start of the international season next weekend.
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is happy to be back in a special environment as the world champions prepare to kick off their 2025 international campaign against the Barbarians in Cape Town this coming weekend.
The Boks are currently in camp in Johannesburg, and will be leaving for Cape Town on Sunday, where they will get into their match week preparation ahead of their non-Test against the famed invitational team, following which they welcome Italy and Georgia for their incoming series.
'It is special'
Kolisi recently spoke about how great it feels to be back in the Bok setup, and highlighted the return of veteran lock Lood de Jager, who has been out of the team for a couple of years due to health problems and injury, as to why it is so special.
'Playing here is not forever, and somewhere along the line, it is going to end. So, we appreciate it a whole lot more when we get back in camp. When you see a guy like Lood after such a long time, it is special,' explained Kolisi.
'The hugs are just different. I don't know how to explain it. He (De Jager) was punching me, and I asked him, 'Why are you hitting me', and he said, 'Because I am excited to see you'. He was greeting everyone with a smile on his face, and he knows how it feels when you are not here.
'That is the kind of environment we have. We see the management joke with each other. It makes it a proper family, and a safe space for a lot of us. That is why we can work that hard when they push us on the field.'
All systems go
With almost the full squad together after various franchise finals were played over the past weekend, Kolisi said that it was all systems go in training and that the coaches were pushing them as hard as possible to get up to speed.
'Training is as hard as games, sometimes it's even harder. Felix (Jones, assistant coach) is back, and he's always on our case and shouting,' said Kolisi with a laugh.
'When we did the fitness test (last week), he was always pushing you to get yourself there. You try and get yourself there, and you are dead (tired) by the end of it. And then he says, 'you did well'.
'That is all they want from us, to give our best and not worry about mistakes. Nobody makes a mistake on purpose. You play (your rugby) in safety here. They want us to play at this intensity, so they train us to get to that intensity. That is the nice thing, and I enjoy being here.'
The Springboks will be playing their first Test in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) since 2021, when they played Argentina behind closed doors, and in front of fans since playing Australia in 2018, when they take on Italy in their second Test in July.
Hometown
It is Kolisi's hometown, while Bok coach Rassie Erasmus was born in Despatch (just outside Gqeberha), and the captain is looking forward to playing there again.
'It is going to be good to be back in the Eastern Cape. The people there are hungry for events and things to happen, and we know how much they support us,' said Kolisi.
'Myself and coach Rassie come from there. It's full at the airport when we get there, because people love rugby in the Eastern Cape. I have no doubt it (the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium) is going to be full when we play there.
'It is going to be a great atmosphere of course and I am really looking forward to seeing some old friends. So hopefully more events can happen in the Eastern Cape and Gqeberha.'

'It's amazing to go out there in front of 50,000 people, they're all cheering for the Boks, they're all wanting us to unite the country. You don't need much more motivation than that.' Another World Cup victory A possible, unprecedented third straight Rugby World Cup title in Australia is a big carrot that Etzebeth can't deny, and keeping the Boks at the top of the world rankings is a big goal of his over the coming years. 'To be part of Rassie's group, that's it. It's a little bit different from when they (the coaching team) arrived in 2018. It's special, but I think they want to make it even more special, and to take the group even higher,' said Etzebeth. 'I would like to be a part of that. Yes, there will be another World Cup in a couple of years. It will be incredible, but we all know how difficult it will be. I think everyone who has always wanted it, will come for it. 'We know that we are not the only team with a chance and teams learn fast. That means we won't be able to do what we did last year. We will have to get better, we will have to be stronger. 'Because if you just stay the same, you won't stay at the top. I think that's our challenge. It's also a challenge for me to be a part of the group that keeps getting better and keeps trying to stay number one.'

Confirmed: When Springboks will name first team of the year
The Springboks are set to enter their first match week of 2025 as the world champions prepare for their season-opener against the Barbarians this Saturday, 28 June, at DHL Stadium. Kick off is at 17:10. It's now been confirmed that Rassie Erasmus will name the first team of the year on Tuesday at 12:00 during a press conference in Cape Town. Erasmus is expected to name a strong team, which will include the likes of Jesse Kriel, Siya Kolisi and Cheslin Kolbe, while there could be opportunities for newcomers Asenathi Ntlabakanye and Vincent Tshituka in a powerful forward pack that could also include Jean-Luc du Preez. After the clash against the Barbarians, the Springboks will prepare for the July Incoming Series, which will see them face Italy in back-to-back Tests in Pretoria and Gqeberha on 5 and 12 July, and Georgia in Nelspruit on 19 July. Felix Jones: ‘Exciting Boks constantly looking to improve'
Felix Jones is back with the Springboks after an ill fated spell as assistant coach with England, and is eager to make a difference. Springbok assistant coach Felix Jones is excited to be back with the team and is looking forward to helping them continue to improve as they build towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Jones was a key member of the Boks' double World Cup winning campaigns in Japan and France, but chose to leave at the end of 2023 due to personal reasons, with his family at the time based in Ireland. He was then brought into the England coaching system under Steve Borthwick, but unfortunately things didn't work out. With Jones available again, Bok coach Rassie Erasmus was quick to snap him back up earlier this year, and he faced the media last week for the first time since his return to the Bok camp. 'It's been really exciting. I get to work with coaches with whom I have a strong relationship. I'm learning a lot from the way they (the Boks) have evolved. From 2019 to 2023 I watched the team change and evolve over that time and coming back in now I can see it has continued,' said Jones. 'That's one of the great strengths of this group, they never stand still. They are constantly looking to improve, and that's one of the most exciting things for me coming back in.' Different environment Having experienced a different team environment in the UK, before joining the Boks in 2019 and after leaving, albeit over a short period, Jones was asked about some of the similarities and differences he had experienced between other teams and the Boks. 'The similarities are that all the players are extremely driven at this level. Anyone that plays international rugby, because they are talented and they have a work ethic and approach to how they conduct themselves. So that is the same,' explained Jones. 'But probably the biggest difference with South Africa in my experience is the diversity with which we call upon people. People from different parts of the country, from different backgrounds, some that are playing rugby in different countries. 'So that's the biggest difference. That we are able to draw upon those different sources, if I can call it that, and trying to boil it all down to one thing is a challenge. But it is also one of the great strengths, and when you get it right it can be quite special.' Jones will likely add plenty to a stacked Bok coaching group, with Erasmus, Deon Davids, Mzwandile Stick and Daan Human having all been together since 2018, and Tony Brown, Jerry Flannery and Duane Vermeulen all new arrivals since 2023.
