Speaker calls for unity and calm
Mangaluru: Amid growing concern over recent communal incidents in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader has issued a heartfelt appeal for unity, patience, and responsible conduct. He urged the public not to succumb to fear, anger, or hatred, and instead respond with the shared values of peace, dignity, and mutual respect. 'Some of the incidents that have taken place in Dakshina Kannada in recent days have deeply hurt all of us. The violence, hate speech, and rising tensions between communities are disturbing and unacceptable,' Khader said in a public statement issued on Tuesday. Calling the coastal district a model of social harmony, the Speaker reflected on the longstanding coexistence of Hindus, Muslims, and Christians in the region. 'This district has been built on the foundation of mutual trust and togetherness. Generations have studied in the same schools, worked in the same markets, and celebrated festivals together. Such harmony is the essence of Dakshina Kannada,' he noted.
Khader stressed the sensitive nature of the present moment, warning that rumours and provocative content circulating on social media could inflame tensions further. 'This is not the time to react with anger or fear. It is a time to uphold our moral values, to act responsibly, and to respect every religion,' he said. He assured the public that any forces attempting to incite hatred or divide society—regardless of their political, social, or religious affiliations—would face strict legal action. However, he emphasised that beyond legal measures, what is needed most is collective patience, compassion, and a commitment to peaceful coexistence.
'I am in constant touch with religious leaders of all faiths and representatives of different communities. We are working together through meaningful dialogue to restore peace and understanding,' Khader said. He acknowledged the pain and anger in the community, comparing it to 'boiling water that cannot reflect'—a metaphor for how disturbed minds cannot make clear decisions. He urged the public to pause, reflect critically, and act in ways that preserve social harmony. 'Let us not allow hatred to overpower humanity, or violence to define our future. I am with you. We are all in this together,' the Speaker concluded. 'Unity is our strength, tolerance is our value, and peace is our goal. Let us move forward with courage.'

Mangalagiri: TDP State vice-president Vemuri Anand Surya on Friday accused YSRCP leaders of hindering the State's progress and engaging in malicious campaigns against the new alliance government. Addressing the media at the party headquarters here, Anand Surya stated that while former chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy promised 'Amma Vodi' to everyone but failed to deliver, the coalition government, upon assuming power, has successfully implemented 'Thalliki Vandanam' crediting funds to accounts for all eligible children in a household. 'Karunakar Reddy himself should disclose how much gold was illicitly taken after being melted in Mumbai, under the pretext of 'wastage',' Surya demanded. He also accused YV Subba Reddy of hurting the sentiments of millions of devotees and Hindus by selling the deity's sacred prasadam at a sweet shop. He cited an incident where Rs 2 crore worth of talanilalu (devotee hair offerings) from Tirumala were illegally trafficked through Myanmar and Thailand to China, only to be intercepted by Assam Rifles. Surya recalled that the YSRCP's 'pink diamond' slander against Chandrababu Naidu was exposed when they withdrew their petition in court after coming to power. He also highlighted how the High Court intervened to stop the YSRCP's attempt to divert Rs 5,000 crore from TTD's fixed deposits. Surya further alleged that the YSRCP brazenly allocated land to Sarada Peetham, disregarding regulations. Surya concluded by stating that YSRCP leaders were spreading false propaganda out of envy, unable to tolerate the growing reverence for TTD under the alliance government's rule. 'Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy faced his downfall, and Bhumana Karunakar Reddy will meet the same fate,' Surya warned.

UK report downplays minority persecution in Bangladesh
New Delhi: A report released by the UK Home Office has claimed that the minorities in Bangladesh are unlikely to face persecution from state and non-state actors. The view contrasts sharply with the violence and the anti-minority stance adhered to by people allegedly close to the caretaker government in the country after Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power last year. The report, released this month, also claimed that people belonging to minority communities are unlikely to be arrested and charged for actions that can be construed as an insult to Islam. After Hasina resigned and fled her country in August last year, there have been several instances of violence targeting people of minority communities, especially the Hindus. India has been raising the issue of violence and persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh at the highest level. The UK report claimed that religious minorities can practice their faith freely throughout Bangladesh without harassment. It, however, said that there have been instances of sporadic communal violence, most recently tied to political upheaval, which continue to result in injuries, assaults, deaths and damage to property. Dhaka-based sources told ET that the minority communities in Bangladesh have been under duress ever since the Awami League was ousted from power, and there have been numerous instances of harassment, contrary to what the UK Home Office has claimed. During the August 2024 political unrest in Bangladesh , members of minority religious groups faced harassment and violence. However, according to the report, many cases were politically motivated rather than based on religious differences.
