A trip to Hong Kong seven years ago sparked James Orman's ambition to ride in the city and the Australian jockey will fulfil that dream when he starts a short-term contract at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.
Orman was 21 when he and his now wife, Heidi, visited Hong Kong, with a trip to the races at Sha Tin and the Valley capturing his imagination.
'We just had a holiday there to see my brother-in-law and thought it was an amazing place,' Orman said.
'The racing was amazing. The crowds were much bigger than back home.' — RaceQ (@RaceQLD) September 22, 2024
A prolific winner in Queensland, including three consecutive Brisbane metropolitan premierships, Orman was given a golden opportunity when he was called on by the Jockey Club to help fill the void left by injured riders Zac Purton, Vincent Ho Chak-yiu and Angus Chung Yik-lai.
The 27-year-old has been licenced until April 2 along with Briton Richard Kingscote, who also makes his Hong Kong debut at the Valley on Wednesday night.
'This is the next step for me and it's something I've always wanted to tick off,' Orman said.
'I'm looking forward to it. I can't wait.'
Sensational effort guys !! James Orman & Mike Costa take a bow
They combined to win 5 of the 7 races at Jebel Ali last night in the UAE 🇦🇪 @JimmyOrman 6 rides-5 winners ✅ And he's not done with just yet

Despite falling short of Group One glory in his 12 years in the saddle, Orman has racked up more than 1,300 winners and been a constant force in the Australian premiership in recent seasons.
He has also tasted success overseas, including a stunning five-timer at Jebel Ali in 2023 in one of his two Dubai stints.
Orman joins a strong Hong Kong riding roster that includes a familiar face in Ben Thompson, who made the move from Queensland 12 months ago.
'I've been speaking to Ben and just trying to get in contact with the trainers and build some relationships,' said Orman, whose minimum riding weight is 122 pounds.
'Hopefully I can get some good rides and I just want to do as best as I can and have a good crack. I haven't really got any particular goals there – more so just get over there and do my best.'
Orman will make a low-key start to his Hong Kong venture with just one ride at the Valley – Magic Beans in the first section of the Class Four Kwai Chung Handicap (1,200m).
Trained by last season's premiership winner Francis Lui Kin-wai, Magic Beans heads to the city circuit after a well-beaten 11th behind Magnifique at Sha Tin on his race debut.
Kingscote also has just one Valley ride – Brave Joy also for Lui in the Class Four Tsuen Wan Handicap (1,000m).
The 38-year-old has won multiple Group Ones in Britain and Ireland and boasts international experience in Japan, Dubai, Australia, France, Bahrain and Turkey. His minimum riding weight is 121 pounds.

In-form Harry Bentley keen to carry momentum to Happy Valley after Flying Sha Tin finish

Harry Bentley heads to Happy Valley on Wednesday night in strong form and in the midst of one of his best months of the season after snaring Sunday night's Sha Tin finale aboard Flying Fortress. Flying Fortress' victory in a hot Class Three Amethyst Handicap (1,400m) was Bentley's fourth for June and left him on the verge of breaking into the top 10 in the jockeys' premiership with 29 successes for the season. 'It was a great result. He's been running well, obviously having won a couple of starts back over the Valley 1,650m, but I think it was a good move bringing him back down to 1,400m at Sha Tin,' said Bentley of Cody Mo Wai-kit's four-year-old, who finished strongly to see off a string of more-fancied rivals and defy his $33.75 quote. 'He's not fiercely keen or anything over 1,650m but he can just slightly take a grip and perhaps use a bit too much energy in doing so. The pace over 1,400m really suited him and he battled it out well. Flying Fortress completes a Cody Mo double at Sha Tin! @HarryBentley_ guides the 32/1 chance home in the finale... ✌️#SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 22, 2025 'It was a hot race with some decent horses coming through like Dazzling Fit and Super Express, so I knew it was a tough ask going in. But fair play to the horse, he won with no fluke so it gives me a bit of confidence going forward. 'I'm pleased to be able to keep a bit of momentum going the past few weeks and months.' Among Bentley's chances of maintaining that momentum at the midweek meeting are Danny Shum Chap-shing's last-start winner Wrote A New Page in the Class Four Lancashire Handicap (1,650m) and the Me Tsui Yu-sak-trained Everstar, who looks to build on a recent placing in the Class Three Selkirk Handicap (1,200m). 'We've got to beat California Moxie, who's in good form and is pretty consistent, but I think Wrote A New Page has got improvement in him,' said Bentley of his mount, who carries 133lb from gate seven. That's not going to be an issue. He's certainly progressing and the trip suits him well. He stays out the distance easily and he can get further. 'Everstar is probably my next best ride. He's another horse who is pretty consistent and doesn't seem to get beaten too far. He ran well last time from a good gate and I'd expect him to run another decent race off that low weight [of 118lb] and with gate five.' Bentley has seven meetings to add to his 29 wins so far this campaign, with the jockey happy enough with a season that has featured a Group Three victory aboard Helene Feeling but hasn't quite reached the heights of last term, which saw the 33-year-old bag his best Hong Kong win tally of 39. 'I would have loved a few more wins than I've had. I'm always striving to get the tally up. Overall I'm pretty happy but there's definitely room for improvement for next season,' he said.

Pray For Mir shoots for feature double after feeling the wrath of handicappers

Matthew Chadwick waves to the crowd after winning the Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) aboard Pray For Mir. Photo: Kenneth Chan Matthew Chadwick is hopeful Pray For Mir can overcome a 21-point jump in the ratings and continue his strong late-season form in Sunday's Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) at Sha Tin. Victorious in open company for the first time in last month's Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m), Pray For Mir will attempt to complete the same feature-race double Galaxy Patch bagged last season. Penalised so heavily because his last-start win came from 17 points outside the handicap, Pray For Mir will carry only 6lb more this weekend and Chadwick is confident he will be right in the thick of things again. 'He's very consistent and he's shown us what he's capable of. It's an interesting field. He gets in with a decent weight still so I'm not too worried about [the ratings jump],' said Chadwick of Pray For Mir, who led all the way to win the Lion Rock Trophy carrying 115lb. 'There's some more pace in the race, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out, but we've seen him take a sit before so we're not too worried about that. Pray For Mir was not for catching! Cody Mo savoured a first Group race win on Saturday at Sha Tin in the G3 Lion Rock Trophy... 💪 @mattLchadwixk #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 2, 2025 'It will just depend how much pressure there is. It's the end of the long season so you never know how the other horses are going to be, either.' While Pray For Mir is stepping up in trip, his rival Cap Ferrat drops in distance after running third behind Voyage Bubble in last month's Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m). The pair jump from adjacent gates and while Pray For Mir is expected to push forward from barrier eight, Hugh Bowman will have some work to do finding cover for Cap Ferrat from the ninth alley. 'He's in great form,' said Bowman of this year's Hong Kong Derby hero, who will carry 126lb. 'It's a lovely race for him and he gets in with a lovely weight. 'I would have really liked a soft draw with him, but it is what it is. I galloped him the other day on the grass and he gave me a really smooth feel. I think it's a lovely set up for him.'

Andrea Atzeni bullish about Patch Of Theta: ‘I wouldn't swap the horse for anything else in the race'

Andrea Atzeni has strong confidence in his two Group Three mounts at Sha Tin on Sunday. Photos: Kenneth Chan Bidding to add to what has already been a fruitful campaign, Andrea Atzeni has declared he wouldn't swap Patch Of Theta for any other ride in Sunday's Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin. The Sardinian jockey has legitimate claims in the final two features of the season, with Patch Of Theta and his Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) mount Bundle Award shaping as strong contenders. Atzeni, who sits third in the jockeys' championship with 54 wins, hops aboard Patch Of Theta for the first time as Francis Lui Kin-wai's classy five-year-old chases a second Group Three triumph this term. Victorious in the Chinese Club Challenge Cup (1,400m) in January, the Zoustar gelding put the writing on the wall with a fast-finishing third to Helios Express in the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) last start. Smart win, Patch Of Theta! 🫡 Francis Lui's Hong Kong International Sale graduate could be Stewards' Cup bound after his smashing G3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup victory on New Year's Day at Sha Tin... @KarisTeetan #LuckyStart | #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) January 2, 2025 'He's a very good ride to get,' Atzeni said. 'His last run was very good. If he can repeat that, he shouldn't be too far away. To be honest, I'd say I wouldn't swap the horse for anything else in the race. 'I think 1,400m is his perfect trip because he's not short of speed and he can travel strong. Sometimes 1,200m looks a little bit sharp and a mile, although he's won over it, can be a little bit far for him.' Patch Of Theta emerged as one of Lui's more progressive gallopers during his championship-winning campaign last season with four wins – all over 1,400m at Sha Tin. Since winning a Class Two mile and the Chinese Club Challenge Cup, he has been tested at a much higher level and, despite finishing well back in his two Group One starts, he was not disgraced. Atzeni highlighted another progressive Lui galloper in Packing Hermod, who shoots for a third consecutive win, and Group One victors Beauty Eternal and Invincible Sage as Patch Of Theta's major rivals on Sunday. Bundle Award drops back in trip in the Premier Plate after a solid fifth to Voyage Bubble in the Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) when making late ground from the tail of the field. The John Size-trained gelding has won three races this season, crowned by last month's Group Three Queen Mother Memorial Cup (2,400m). 'He's another good ride. He ran very well the other day in the mile-and-a-half race,' Atzeni said. 'If you take away the winner Voyage Bubble, it was a very close finish – there wasn't far between second, third, fourth and fifth. I didn't get stuck behind horses but if I got a slightly better run in the straight, I think I would have finished a lot closer. 'Back down into a Group Three handicap with a bottom weight [of 115lb], I know he's dropping back to 1,800m but he won over it before he went on to run in the Derby. 'It's a competitive race, but with the weight difference I think he's definitely well in.' Bundle Award jumps from gate 13 in an even race featuring the likes of dual Group Two winner Straight Arron, Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) hero Cap Ferrat and last-start Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) winner Pray For Mir. Blazing Wukong, an impressive debut winner for Ricky Yiu Poon-fai, and Frankie Lor Fu-chuen's talented three-year-old South Star are among the best of Atzeni's other rides this weekend. 'Blazing Wukong is a really nice horse. He trialled the other day and looked like he's sharpened up from his first run,' Atzeni said. 'It looks like a nice race, but I do like my horse and I think whatever he does this season, he's going to be a much better horse for next year. 'South Star is another horse I like a lot. It's a very good race with some young horses who could be pretty smart next season taking each other on.'
