
Toshiba outlines how best to revitalise your hard drive for a long lifespan

Modern enterprise hard drives are highly reliable and may generally be used beyond their warranty period without any issues and no significant increase in failure rates. However, this is dependent on the drives being well-maintained and operated under optimal conditions. If not, the likelihood of failure rises considerably. But what constitutes optimal operating conditions, and what should companies be mindful of if they wish to maximise the lifespan of their hard drives?
Firstly, hard drives require a stable and consistent operation, as they contain moving parts that can be damaged by movements or shocks. Systems equipped with hard drives are therefore best housed securely in a rack. Tower-format devices, which cannot be accommodated in a rack, should be placed in a location where they are not at risk of being accidentally knocked or kicked, and certainly not on a desk, where the tabletop can act as a sounding board, transmitting any vibrations directly to the devices.
Furthermore, the hard drives must be securely fastened within the device. Merely placing them inside the casing can lead to minor movements of the drive due to the rapidly spinning disks inside, which may cause damage. Particularly in more affordable systems, manufacturers often use plastic clamps or bays that allow for some 'give' in the hard drives or are themselves not completely secure within the casing. In such cases, it is advisable to properly secure the hard drives and bays, for example, with small rubber pieces or use additional screws, if possible.
High Temperatures Shorten Lifespan
Enterprise hard drives are designed to operate at temperatures between 5°C and 60°C. However, this only means that they will function correctly within this range – at higher temperatures, the electronic and mechanical components, such as the spindle bearings, wear out more quickly. Operating at the upper end of the specified range is not ideal either, as it can lead to a higher probability of failure.
The Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) listed in the datasheets refers to an average operating temperature of no more than 40°C. For most enterprise hard drives, this is 2.5 million hours, corresponding to an Annualised Failure Rate (AFR) of 0.35%. This means that out of 1,000 drives, three to four are expected to fail over the course of a year. At temperatures above 40°C, the failure rate increases – typically by about 30% for every 5°C rise in temperature. Therefore, continuous operation of hard drives at 55°C can raise the average failure rate (AFR) to 0.76%, leading to the expected failure of seven to eight drives within a year.
Overloading Increases Wear and Tear
Furthermore, usage also affects the lifespan of hard drives, as they are designed for a specific operational duration and workload. In the case of desktop drives, this is typically 16 hours per day and 55 TB per year – these models are unsuitable for network-attached storage (NAS) systems and servers, where they run 24/7 and are subjected to higher workloads. On the other hand, NAS and enterprise hard drives can handle round-the-clock operation and manage 180 TB and 550 TB, respectively. It doesn't matter whether the data is being written or read.
Suppose companies want to maximise the lifespan of their hard drives. In that case, they should ensure not to exceed the specified workloads, protect the drives from shocks and vibrations, and operate them consistently at no more than 40°C on average over their lifetime. Then, using them beyond the warranty period is usually not an issue – however, regular data backup becomes even more important.

European space ambitions need Gulf partners
I f Europe wants to stand on its own two feet, it must look up – literally. Space, once associated only with exploration – or, more cynically – national vanity projects, has become crucial to the economic health, security, and soft power of any government, national or regional. That's one reason why Josef Aschbacher, head of the European Space Agency, has called for more investment in the sector. Europe, he argues, cannot afford to lag behind. The ambition to be 'strategically autonomous' and shape its own future depends on catching up in an area where other powers, the U.S. and China most notably, are pulling ahead. Space technology, it's crucial to note, is not just about satellites and rockets even though culturally, that's often what comes to mind when people think about it. This perception has been strengthened by Elon Musk's SpaceX, which communicates aggressively around its many launches. Space in fact touches everything from military equipment and weapons to communications infrastructure to environmental monitoring and supply chain efficiency. A recent study published by the World Economic Forum and McKinsey underscored how 'space-based technologies are revolutionising the supply chain, transportation, and mobility sectors, positioning them as the fastest-growing segment of the global space economy.' In these areas, Europe has some of the world's best engineers. But it consistently fails to support the companies where they work with meaningful investment. Compare this situation with that of the Middle East. The Gulf region has become a surprising contender in the new space race. The UAE and Saudi Arabia, once absent from this arena, are now outspending many of their Western counterparts and making rapid progress. In just over a decade, they have poured $25 billion into the field, and that is expected to grow to $75 billion by 2032. First, national security remains essential. Secondly, they need to plan for the post-oil era. The Gulf economies rely heavily on oil, and they will be in deep trouble if they do not diversify their economies. Thirdly, they need to prepare the labour market for the twin challenges of automation and climate change. They are also closely aligned with strategic initiatives: AI, autonomous systems. Space covers all of these. It promises robust security, long-time prosperity, and future-proof jobs, as well as national prestige and the tools to adapt to an uncertain world. But the Middle East and Europe need not see themselves as rivals. The Gulf states are actively looking for partners; they want to develop their space infrastructure further. They are becoming global hubs of innovation. And Europe, with its highly skilled, highly educated workforce and depth in advanced technology, should be an obvious ally in this undertaking. A paradigm shift is underway: those countries that fail to see how much more the Middle East is than a source of capital will fall far behind. Europe would benefit from the support. It has many promising space companies developing world-beating dual-use technologies. With more funding and backing, they could scale rapidly: ICEYE, one of Europe's most exciting space companies, has benefitted hugely from its presence in the Gulf. Growing fast would stop lesser companies in other nations from appearing, gaining more funding, and out-scaling them. In the United States, small, innovative companies have long been seen as the key to remaining at the forefront of innovation, and those companies receive generous funding for that reason. In Europe, procurement processes badly need rethinking, and there is still some hesitation around investing in defence, which often overlaps with space. There was a time when the Middle East was viewed (wrongly, even then) as a source of oil money and little else. That has changed: it is now widely viewed as a genuine industrial power, as well as a large and growing market and a vital bridge and trading point between East and West. If Europe were to collaborate with the United Arab Emirates, it could get much more than funding. The Gulf is vast, with open landscapes and a climate perfectly suited for the testing of advanced, satellite-based tech. Europe is densely packed and its regulations are stringent. The Gulf, for its part, would gain European know-how, which would accelerate its development in space. Jobs, knowledge transfer and commercial opportunities would also follow. So a strong Europe–Middle East alliance in space would serve both sides: creating economic opportunities, reducing dependency on unpredictable allies, and developing infrastructure that will define the next century. It's a win-win. The Middle East is ready and waiting. It has shown that it's looking ahead to the future, and it is eager to join hands with countries and regions for mutual advantage: the slew of multibillion-dollar U.S. tech deals struck by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar shows that. Europe, which for a long time has relied on others, and has been able to invest in its social infrastructure due to the promise of U.S. military support, badly needs to work with other countries to ensure its security and the quality of life of its citizens. It should act now. The clock is ticking.

Global second-hand smartphone market sees annual drop
Recent CCS Insight data has highlighted a 2% year-on-year drop in global second-hand smartphone shipments marking the first annual drop recorded in more than three years. The research organisation noted that the decline comes as operators face increasing consumer preference for SIM-free handsets bought directly from manufacturers or online platforms. An estimated 27.1 million devices were sold globally in the organised secondary market in the first quarter of the year, down from 27.6 million in Q1 2024. However, Ben Hatton, Market Analyst at CCS Insight, described the Q1 slowdown as 'nothing more than a blip', pointing to a positive long-term outlook in the coming quarters. A key growth opportunity is expected to come from trade-in programmes. Indeed, data showed that just 31 per cent of European consumers currently trade in or sell old phones, highlighting an untapped supply of more than 100 million devices annually. As tighter European regulations restrict device imports, the research company noted that despite a slow Q1, strong device buybacks in late 2024 show vendors with internal trade-in schemes are better positioned for long-term supply stability. Simon Bryant, VP of research at CCS Insight, highlighted Samsung's Galaxy Club in the UK as a model to watch, stating such initiatives 'help businesses lock consumers into trade-in agreements, improving take-back and supporting higher residual values for the leading brands in the secondary market'. Looking ahead, Hatton noted 'more mature' markets like France and the UK, which fell 11 per cent and 3 per cent respectively, will remain key to gauging the recovery of the second-hand European smartphone sector for the remainder of 2025.
