8th Pay Commission: Expectations are high among government employees that the fitment factor, revised pay matrix, allowances, and pension structures will be finalised in 2025.
8th Pay Commission: The central government announced the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) in January this year, well before the current pay structure expires in December 2025. The upcoming commission is eagerly awaited by millions of central government employees and pensioners, as it is expected to revise pay and pension structures significantly.
According to reports, the government is already in the process of filling 42 key positions, including consultants and the chairperson of the 8th CPC. The new commission is expected to begin its work soon, once the Terms of Reference (ToR) are finalised. One of the key areas of focus will be the revision of the fitment factor, which plays a crucial role in determining salary and pension increases.
The 8th Pay Commission will revise salaries, pensions, and allowances, directly benefiting over 50 lakh central government employees and over 65 lakh pensioners.
What Is the Fitment Factor?
The fitment factor is a multiplier used to calculate the revised basic pay for central government employees when a new pay commission is implemented. It ensures uniform salary hikes during the transition from the old to the new pay structure.
Formula:
New Basic Pay = Old Basic Pay × Fitment Factor
Under the 7th Pay Commission, the fitment factor was set at 2.57. For instance, if an employee's basic pay was Rs 10,000 under the 6th CPC, their revised pay became:
If current basic pay = Rs 20,000
Then new basic pay = Rs 20,000 × 2.86 = Rs 57,200
This reflects a remarkable jump in take-home salary, especially compared to the hike seen during the previous pay commission.
(Note: These are estimated values assuming a uniform fitment factor.)
What Lies Ahead for Government Employees?
While the government has not yet made an official announcement, expectations are high that the fitment factor, revised pay matrix, allowances, and pension structures will be finalised in 2025. Employees are particularly keen to learn whether the 8th CPC will propose a uniform fitment factor across all levels, which could simplify salary structures and enhance fairness.
Until official announcements are made, government employees remain in anticipation, hoping that the 8th Pay Commission brings substantial financial relief in line with rising costs of living and inflation.

Lawyer sues sub-registrar's office over faulty encumbrance certificate, wins Rs 10,000 compensation

Bengaluru: A simple request for an encumbrance certificate (EC) turned into a legal victory for advocate Praveen Kumar K — besides exposing a case of bureaucratic negligence — after the sub-registrar's office in Peenya issued a faulty document. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It all began when 34-year-old Praveen, from Vijayanagar, applied online for an EC relating to a property in Kurubarahalli, JC Nagar, on Dec 3, 2023. He sought details of all transactions between Oct 1, 2010, and Dec 3, 2023, and paid Rs 170 via UPI for the certificate, which was issued on Dec 7, 2023. To Kumar's surprise, the EC returned "no transactions found," which was a glaring error. The property in question had been purchased through a registered sale deed dated Oct 11, 2010. The document was properly recorded but was omitted from the EC, making the certificate not just inaccurate but professionally damaging. Kumar issued a legal opinion based on the faulty EC, and the omission risked affecting his credibility and legal standing. Kumar immediately approached the sub-registrar's office requesting rectification. When he received no response, he sent a legal notice on Jan 24, 2024. A second notice was issued on March 14, 2024, which he also escalated to multiple officials, including the revenue minister and commissioner of stamps. Finally, he sent a statutory notice under Section 80 of the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) on July 20, 2024. Despite repeated attempts to seek redressal, Kumar received no reply or corrective action from the sub-registrar. Fed up, he filed a consumer complaint before the Bengaluru Urban II additional district consumer disputes redressal commission on March 21, 2024, for deficiency in service. The sub-registrar's office didn't appear for the hearing and failed to file any response, leading to an ex-parte proceeding. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kumar submitted 12 documents in support of his case, including the EC, sale deed, legal notices, postal acknowledgements, and the CPC notice. After going through all the documents, the commission observed that the sub-registrar's silence throughout the process was an implicit admission of guilt. The commission also observed that EC is a crucial document used to verify the ownership status and financial encumbrances (like loans, mortgages, or pending litigation) on a property. A defective EC can mislead stakeholders and prejudice their rights. It may result in litigation, delays in transactions, and even losses to parties who rely on the certificate's accuracy for legal or financial decisions. Referring to a 2007 national commission ruling, the consumer forum observed: "Issuance of such wrong EC may mislead the authorities concerned and may create unnecessary litigation in respect of the subject property. Hence, such negligence can't be considered as trivial." On April 28, 2025, the consumer commission ordered the sub-registrar's office to refund the fee paid by the petitioner for obtaining the EC, aside from paying him Rs 10,000 for mental distress, loss of professional reputation, and to cover litigation costs.

'Routes Diversified': Minister Assures Fuel Supply Stability As Iran Mulls Strait Of Hormuz Shutdown

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important oil transport chokepoints, carrying about one-fifth of the global oil output Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri on Sunday assured citizens that India's fuel supply remains stable and secure, after Iran announced move to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route. In a post on X, Puri said India has closely monitored the evolving geopolitical situation for the past two weeks and has taken steps under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to diversify energy imports. 'We have diversified our supplies in the past few years and a large volume of our supplies do not come through the Strait of Hormuz now," Puri wrote. We have been closely monitoring the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East since the past two weeks. Under the leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji, we have diversified our supplies in the past few years and a large volume of our supplies do not come through the Strait…— Hardeep Singh Puri (@HardeepSPuri) June 22, 2025 'Our Oil Marketing Companies have supplies of several weeks and continue to receive energy supplies from several routes. We will take all necessary steps to ensure stability of supplies of fuel to our citizens," he added. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important oil transport chokepoints, carrying about one-fifth of the global oil output. Iran's parliament on Sunday approved a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz following US airstrikes on its nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — marking a dangerous escalation in the ongoing war between Iran and Israel. According to top Indian intelligence sources as reported by News18, the closure could lead to a global oil crisis worse than 1973, potentially triggering a global recession. India imports around 5.5 million barrels of crude oil per day, with about 2 million barrels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Sources warned that the strait's closure could choke 20–25% of the world's oil and 30% of global LNG trade, leading to oil prices shooting up to $200–$300 per barrel, which would severely impact the global economy. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a 45-minute phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday. Modi expressed deep concern over the recent escalations and stressed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and immediate de-escalation. 'India stands for peace and humanity," PM Modi said. He also thanked Iran for helping ensure the safety and return of Indian nationals from the region.
