[Kim Seong-kon] What to do with the polarity in our society

We are now living in a polarized society sharply divided into two antagonizing groups, where there is no middle ground. In such a society, the two extreme factions easily become hostile monsters trying to eliminate each other. The inevitable outcome is the total annihilation of society.
Recently, I watched a 2020 American film, 'The Hunt.' At first, I thought that the movie was just another man-hunting thriller, evoking Richard Connell's classic story, 'The Most Dangerous Game.' Soon, however, it turned out to be a pungent parody of the current polarization between the Left and the Right, or liberalism and conservatism in contemporary global society these days.
In 'The Hunt,' a group of white-collar people kidnap blue-collar workers to hunt and kill them for sport. These days, some people say that America is divided by left-wing elites and right-wing working-class people. Yet, 'The Hunt' defies such oversimplified categorization.
Indeed, the kidnappers in the movie are not 'left-wing elites,' per se: they are more like rich snobs. The leader, Athena, owns a private jet, enjoys caviar and purchases three bottles of champagne costing $25,000 each. Moreover, they despise the working class, calling them 'deplorables,' which reminds us of Hillary Clinton's infamously ill-chosen remarks about Trump supporters during her presidential election campaign.
At the beginning of the movie, Athena's friends exchange jokes through group texts, such as, 'At least the hunt is coming up. Nothing is better than going out to the Mansion and slaughtering a dozen deplorables.' The problem is that their jokes leak on the internet and fuel fury over the conspiracy theory called 'Manorgate.'
As their group chat becomes a scandal, Athena's group members are fired and their careers are ruined. Furious, they decide to make 'Manorgate' real for those who are responsible for spreading the conspiracy theory. Thus, Athena's group members kidnap 12 working-class people, and then begin hunting and killing them for vengeance.
The hunted try to escape but are picked off one by one by the hunters. However, one of the hunted named Crystal begins to fight back, killing all the Athena's group members and finally Athena herself. As a war veteran, Crystal turns the hunt into 'the most dangerous game' for the hunters.
'The Hunt' is a controversial movie, dealing with sensitive political issues. However, it is worth watching because it enlightens us with some compelling issues for our times: the polarity and antagonism of our society between the Left and the Right, or the rich and the poor.
The movie also teaches us not to assume things, because making wrong assumptions will lead us to disastrous misunderstandings and mistakes. For instance, Athena's group chat about hunting and slaughtering 'a dozen deplorables' was just a prank initially, but it becomes real after people assume that they are really hunting and killing working-class people for fun.
The main characters of the movie, too, keep making mistakes due to their incorrect assumptions. For example, the Athena group members kidnap the wrong Crystal, capturing someone else with the same name from the same city. They just assume that it is the same Crystal who posted offensive remarks about them on social media. However, their assumption costs their lives, because the woman they do kidnap kills all the Athena group members.
Moreover, Crystal, too, makes a mistake by assuming that her companion, Don, is one of Athena's group members in disguise and kills him. Indeed, the movie admonishes the viewers that both sides can make fatal mistakes, if they wrongfully assume and become suspicious of one another.
The movie also illustrates that if two opposite adversaries hate each other blindly, they will both end up being extremists. At the end of the movie, Crystal and Athena fight ferociously and both are severely wounded. This scene illustrates that if the Left and the Right fight to death, both sides will end up being brutally wounded.
After killing Athena, Crystal wears Athena's dress, takes Athena's bag, boards Athena's jet and leaves, as if she were Athena herself. This final scene symbolizes that she and Athena may be identical in essence.
In the movie, Crystal tells her own version of the famous children's story, 'The Hare and the Tortoise.' In her story, the Jackrabbit kills the Box Turtle after losing the race. When Crystal kills Athena, she sees a Jackrabbit near the body of Athena. The Jackrabbit could be a symbol of Crystal's victory, but that victory is problematic because it is, in fact, vengeance disguised as justice.
'The Hunt' is a stern reprimand for our polarized society sharply divided by the Left and the Right, progressives and conservatives, or the privileged and the underprivileged, who are antagonizing each other. The movie warns that if we continue to fight, we all will suffer fatal wounds, and our crippled society will face total annihilation eventually. We cannot let that happen.

La Scala's Ortombina on maestro Chung Myung-whun, Verdi and opera's future

BUSAN -- During the opening weekend of Busan's much-anticipated new concert hall, conductor Chung Myung-whun -- artistic director of Classic Busan, the municipal office overseeing the Busan Concert Hall and the upcoming Busan Opera House -- led a series of inaugural concerts that signaled a new chapter in the city's cultural ambitions. Among those in attendance was Fortunato Ortombina, artistic director of Milan's Teatro alla Scala, one of the world's most storied opera houses. Ortombina, who has worked closely with Maestro Chung over two decades, shared personal reflections and outlined a vision for deepening ties between Busan and La Scala. In an interview with Korean media on Saturday, Ortombina recalled his first glimpse of Chung in 1992. At the time, Ortombina was a student and tour guide in the city of Verdi's birth. A group of American tourists offered him a ticket to La Scala for a performance of "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" by Shostakovich, conducted by Chung. "I sat just five meters away," Ortombina remembered. Their first formal meeting came in 2003 at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, when Chung led the Orchestra of Santa Cecilia at the theater's reopening after a devastating fire. From 2003 to 2007, the two worked together at La Scala, where Ortombina served as head of artistic planning. Later, as artistic director of La Fenice for 17 years, Ortombina invited Chung to conduct nearly every year. "He is the conductor I've worked with the most in my life," he noted. Ortombina also highlighted Maestro Chung's enduring relationship with La Scala. Since his debut in 1989, Chung has led more than 180 performances with the Filarmonica della Scala, interpreting a wide range of operatic works — from Shostakovich and Strauss to Mozart and Puccini, with Verdi at the core. 'Verdi is Italy's most important composer,' said Ortombina. 'And although Maestro Chung was born in Busan, his musical sensibility is profoundly Italian.' Chung's deep understanding of Verdi, and his ability to convey emotional truth and narrative clarity, were central to his appointment as the music director of La Scala, Ortombina explained. The decision was made unanimously by the board and the city of Milan, he said. "When I had to choose a new music director, I asked who had the strongest connection with the orchestra and the capacity to shape a long-term project. That person was Maestro Chung," Ortombina said. "Talent is a miracle. Verdi probably didn't even know Korea existed, but his music found fertile ground here." As part of a growing partnership, the Filarmonica della Scala will perform at the Busan Concert Hall in September. Ortombina's three-day trip to Korea includes talks on further collaboration and a site tour of the Busan Opera House, set to open in 2027. With over 20 years of experience leading major opera institutions, Ortombina underscored the importance of public engagement. 'My dream is that five years from now, no one in Milan can say they've never been to La Scala. This is not only an artistic project; it's a social one.' He pointed to initiatives like youth education programs, school tours of opera workshops, and simplified opera adaptations for children. "Opera should be part of humanistic education," he said. "Just like we study Caravaggio or read Thomas Mann, we should experience Verdi." Describing La Scala as "the second home of every Milanese, which was rebuilt even before schools and hospitals after World War II," Ortombina said that "A theater should belong to its city. If Busan's citizens feel ownership of their new opera house, that will be the true success." Speaking about Busan's new opera house, Ortombina reaffirmed his belief in opera's enduring relevance. 'It's not about whether an opera is old. It's about how it speaks to us today. That's what Maestro Chung excels at -- bringing timeless music close to the heart.' On Saturday, Maestro Chung took the stage with the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra -- which he founded in 1997 -- conducting and performing as pianist in Beethoven's Triple Concerto in C major, Op. 56, alongside cellist Jian Wang and violinist Sayaka Shoji. The program culminated in a stirring performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, 'Choral.' Comprising top-tier musicians from Korea, China and Japan, the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra has alternated between periods of activity and hiatus since its founding. It reconvened under Chung's direction for the opening of the Busan Concert Hall. Reflecting on the evening, Ortombina said, 'I was glad to be part of the historic performance at the Busan Concert Hall. Reflecting on the meaning of the music and the work made it all the more moving. The acoustics were satisfying, and the performance was fantastic!'

Ye's Korea concert on again, after cancellation following Nazi controversy

Ye's concert to take place July 26 in Incheon American hip-hop artist Ye is set to return to Korea for a concert next month, following the cancellation of his previously scheduled show due to controversial behavior. Event organizer Channel Candy announced on Friday that 'Ye Live in Korea' will be held July 26 at Incheon Munhak Stadium. Channel Candy previously hosted Ye's listening party "Ye x Ty Dolla Sign Vultures Listening Experience" at Goyang Sports Complex in August. The agency was also involved in planning Ye's scheduled May 31 concert in partnership with Coupang Play. Coupang Play announced the show's cancellation on May 19, citing the artist's recent controversies. 'Due to recent issues surrounding Kanye West, the upcoming concert has been unavoidably canceled,' the streaming platform agency had said. The controversy stemmed from Ye's recent track 'Heil Hitler,' released on May 8. The track sparked outrage for including excerpts from a 1935 speech by Adolf Hitler and lyrics that appeared to praise the Nazi regime.
