Give faster approvals for projects: CREDAI

The Hindu21-05-2025

The Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (CREDAI) Tamil Nadu, the apex body of private real estate developers in the State, has requested the Tamil Nadu government to give faster approvals for real estate projects.
Noting that real estate plays a very important role for the State to achieve its $1 trillion economy goal, W. S. Habib, president, CREDAI Tamil Nadu and Chairman and Managing Director of RWD, said that there needs to be a single window clearance for real estate projects. 'Losses keep mounting if approvals get delayed,' he said.
'Streamlining approvals and simplifying compliance will unlock tremendous value for developers and homebuyers. This will also help the State government in terms of stamp duty collections and GST collections,' Mr. Habib said. It is learnt that approvals are getting late by 8-9 months.
The CREDAI head also said that the association would like to be a part of planning of masterplans for all 135 major cities and towns across the State. 'We need clarity on the masterplan – this will help our developers to understand where they can buy land and whether they would get approvals or not,' he added.
Srikumar Swaminathan, Secretary of CREDAI Tamil Nadu, highlighted about the rising raw material costs in the real estate sector. He also indicated that there are issues with sourcing certain raw materials. According to him, the price increase is between 30%-40%.
In a move to deepen its Statewide presence, CREDAI Tamil Nadu announced the expansion of its chapter network. With 10 existing chapters, the association plans to add 5 to 6 more in key growth corridors, including Sivagangai, Vellore, Karur, the Nilgiris, and Thanjavur, enabling better regional representation and local advocacy.
CREDAI Tamil Nadu will also be conducting annual international expos under the 'FAIRPRO' brand in Dubai, Muscat, Abudhabi, Riyadh, Doha and Singapore, aimed at attracting NRI investments and showcasing Tamil Nadu's real estate strengths on the world stage. Both Mr. Habib and Mr.Swaminathan said that a lot of NRIs are keen on picking properties in Tamil Nadu.

Industry finds GST beneficial, seeks clarity and dispute reform: Survey

India Inc had an overall positive experience with Goods and Services Tax (GST) over the past 8 years as the new tax regime has simplified compliance and supported business growth, but clarity in rules and better dispute resolution are still essential, a Deloitte survey said on Monday. Deloitte India's GST@8 survey also called for industry demand to strengthen the dispute resolution mechanism, rationalising rates across sectors, and ensuring audit uniformity between central and state tax authorities. Based on 963 responses from senior corporate executives across eight industries, the survey said that industry wants liberalisation of export rules, rationalising GST rates for the entire supply chain and unlocking working capital measures. The Deloitte survey said persistent impediments to the ease of doing business under GST include challenges in obtaining refunds, a limited understanding of new-age business models and expansive pro-revenue legal interpretations by authorities remain a challenge With regard to GST registration process, the survey suggested pan-India standardisation of registration documents, enabling simultaneous amendment and reduced registration timelines, were highlighted as key reforms to enhance the GST registration process. Deloitte India President, Tax, Gokul Chaudhri said the survey shows that confidence in GST has steadily risen from 59 per cent in 2022 to 85 per cent in 2025, driven by improved compliance maturity, digitisation and proactive engagement by policymakers. He emphasises that automation of tax processes, especially e-invoicing and return auto-population, continues to deliver tangible benefits, and that industry acknowledges the government's collaborative approach in resolving concerns through timely clarifications. As per the survey, 45 per cent of MSMEs advocate for rate rationalisation to enhance competitiveness. In comparison, large and very large enterprises (45 per cent and 47 per cent, respectively) prioritise the establishment of a more effective dispute resolution mechanism to support operational certainty, the survey said. Goods and Services Tax (GST) was rolled out on July 1, 2017. GST subsumed about 17 local taxes and 13 cesses into a 5-tier structure, simplifying the tax regime. In 8 years, the number of registered taxpayers under GST has risen from 65 lakh in 2017 to 1.52 crore. ED conducts search and seizure operation at NRI businessman's premises in Udupi and Shivamogga, finds FEMA violation

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Bengaluru Zonal Office, conducted a search and seizure operation under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999, in the case of 'Mohammed Iqbal & others', covering three premises in Udupi and Shivamogga districts last week. During the search operations carried out on June 19, various incriminating documents related to FEMA violations and other digital devices were found and seized, according to a release from the ED on Monday. During the investigation, it was found that Mohammed Iqbal, an NRI and Doha-based businessman operating in the manpower services business, had, over the years, remitted funds to the tune of ₹70 crore from his five business entities located in Doha to his NRE/NRO accounts maintained in India. Incriminating documents seized during the search indicate that the said funds were subsequently utilised by him in violation of FEMA provisions, like loans given to resident companies, investment in residents proprietorship concerns and firms indulged in real estate business, purchase of agriculture lands and advances to various persons for purchasing lands for developing plots etc., the release said. Further investigation is in progress, it added.
