Diana Penty on Cocktail's re-release: Curious to know what Gen-Z thinks
'Cocktail', the much-loved romantic drama from 2012, quietly made its way back to theatres on May 30 this year. Directed by Homi Adajania and starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty, the film became a pop culture favourite when it was released over a decade ago, and its re-release has stirred a wave of nostalgia among fans.In a candid conversation, Diana Penty looked back at the film's journey and the love it continues to receive. Speaking exclusively to India Today, Diana said, 'It feels great to know that 'Cocktail' has been re-released. That film did really well back then and has always held a special place in my heart. I think what's exciting now is that there's a whole new generation that hasn't seen it - a younger audience that might experience it for the first time on the big screen.'advertisementDiana emphasised her curiosity over how modern audiences will receive the film: 'It'll be interesting to see how they receive it, especially since times have changed so much. Even up to five or six years ago, I remember people telling me how much they connected with it. So I'm curious - will Gen-Z and Gen-Alpha relate to it the same way? Maybe the Alphas are still a bit too young, but you never know!'
She added, 'Either way, it's lovely that a film like 'Cocktail', which meant so much to so many, is getting a second life.' Originally released on July 13, 2012, 'Cocktail' became a box-office success thanks to its urban charm, vibrant soundtrack - including hit songs like 'Tumhi Ho Bandhu' and 'Daaru Desi' - and dynamic performances by its iconic trio.Diana Penty is currently gearing up for the release of her upcoming film 'Detective Sherdil', which is set to release on June 20. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Boman Irani, and others as part of the ensemble cast.

Who is Matt Cardona? The former WWE star who just called out John Cena
Image via WWE Former WWE Superstar Matt Cardona, better known to longtime fans as Zack Ryder, is back in the spotlight after being name-dropped by none other than John Cena during a fiery promo on SmackDown. Cena, in a throwback to CM Punk's infamous 2011 'pipebomb,' directly mentioned Cardona alongside Claudio Castagnoli and Nic Nemeth, sparking speculation and excitement across the wrestling world. Cardona didn't take long to respond. The current NWA World Champion posted a cheeky 'Hey @JohnCena' message on X (formerly Twitter), making it clear he heard Cena loud and clear. While the moment caught many fans off-guard, it's hardly surprising for those who've been following Cardona's remarkable journey since his WWE release in 2020. — TheMattCardona (@TheMattCardona) How Zack Ryder won over the WWE universe Matt Cardona began his wrestling journey in New York Wrestling Connection before joining WWE's developmental system in the mid-2000s. He rose to mainstream attention as Zack Ryder, forming part of the tag team 'La Familia' alongside Curt Hawkins and Edge. But it was his solo run, particularly his YouTube series 'Z! True Long Island Story' - that truly set him apart. At a time when fan voices were just starting to influence creative decisions, Ryder's videos turned him from a mid-card talent into a cult favorite. That push culminated in a United States Championship win in 2011, followed by a memorable (and chaotic) storyline involving John Cena and Eve Torres. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Eat 1 Teaspoon Every Night, See What Happens A Week Later Health Wellness Journal Watch More Undo Zack Ryder's most memorable moments: WWE Playlist Despite a loyal fanbase, Ryder was pushed back down the card in later years. A surprise Intercontinental Title win at WrestleMania 32 offered a brief resurgence, but soon after, he was back in tag team action with Curt Hawkins. WWE released him in 2020 as part of pandemic-era budget cuts. Far from slowing down, Cardona used his WWE exit as fuel. He rebranded himself under his real name and made a mark across the independent wrestling scene. He won titles in GCW, Impact Wrestling, and NWA, building a reputation as a tough, unpredictable performer willing to take risks. Cardona has often teased a return to WWE, but on his terms. 'I would only come back as Matt Cardona,' he said in a previous interview, ruling out a full-time return to his Zack Ryder persona. Now, with Cena's reference reigniting buzz, fans are once again speculating: Could Matt Cardona be WWE-bound? For now, the former Internet Champion seems happy to play spoiler - and maybe stir the pot one more time. 12 years of Raanjhanaa: 5 films capturing same chaos of love and obsession
Twelve years ago, on June 21, 2013, Raanjhanaa was released to the public, telling an emotional story of naiveté, obsession, and loss that many could relate to. The film examines the various shades of unrequited love and teenage passion, with Dhanush's explosive Hindi cinema debut, a haunting score by A.R. Rahman, and Aanand L. Rai's grounded directing serving as its anchors. In honour of the film's 12th anniversary, we take a look back at five more films that share the same Raanjhanaa vibe—an intense emotional journey marked by untidy longing and honest vulnerability. Raanjhanaa Stream Bareilly Ki Barfi, Highway, and Piku now on OTTplay Premium— heartwarming journeys filled with charm, self-discovery, and unforgettable characters. As a modern-day adaptation of Great Expectations, Fitoor explores issues of social class and the psychological wounds caused by unrequited love. The film stars Katrina Kaif as the icy, otherworldly Firdaus, and Aditya Roy Kapur plays the role of an artist whose obsession with the eerie Kashmir backdrop and artistic images leads him to fall in love. It tackles the same themes as Raanjhanaa—the way love can turn into an obsession and the trauma that people carry with them into adulthood. Tamasha How can we cope when the pressures of conforming to society stifle our true selves? Two individuals, Ved (Ranbir Kapoor) and Tara (Deepika Padukone), who meet in Corsica and develop feelings for each other's unrestrained selves, are the means through which this is examined in Tamasha by Imtiaz Ali. Similar to Kundan in Raanjhanaa, Ved also grapples with the conflict between conforming and fully embracing life. Romance is depicted in both films as a path to self-discovery rather than merely a romantic pursuit. Cocktail At its heart, Cocktail is about friendship, love, and the hazy space in between. Relationships are unpredictable, as shown in the stories of Meera, Veronica, and Gautam, portrayed by Diana Penty, Deepika Padukone, and Saif Ali Khan, respectively. Similar to Raanjhanaa, it explores the complexities of love and asks if it is ever sufficient on its own. Love is depicted as unpredictable, fragile, and chaotic at times. Manmarziyaan One of the most direct spiritual descendants of Raanjhanaa is Manmarziyaan by Anurag Kashyap. Rumi, played by Taapsee Pannu, is conflicted between Robbie's (Abhishek Bachchan) level-headed wisdom and Vicky's (Vicky Kaushal) impulsive, poisonous love. The film exposes the tumultuous emotional turbulence that frequently characterises contemporary love, thanks to a scathing screenplay by Kanika Dhillon. Vicky is just like Kundan: a real, flawed, and obsessed person. OK Bangaram This Tamil romantic comedy features Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen as a contemporary Mumbai couple negotiating a live-in relationship, and it was directed by Mani Ratnam. The emotional tug of war between commitment and independence is delicately woven into the second half of Raanjhanaa; despite its seemingly lighter tone, OK Bangaram manages to portray this conflict. It's about a love that finds its way through life while holding on to its dreams. Raanjhanaa reflected on more than simply romantic relationships; it also explored themes of sacrifice, identity, and the challenges of first love.
