A hike through stormy Daisetsuzan, Hokkaido: Japan's largest national park

I squint into the fog, my eyes streaming in the cold wind that whips over the mountain.
Did that rock just move? I give the bell hanging from my backpack a shake, wipe the tears from my eyes and look again at the dark shape 50 metres away. Jingle jingle. Nothing stirs; indeed, it is a rock and not a bear.
We continue up the mountainside while keeping an eye out for movement.
My partner and I are in the middle of a multi-day, 50km summer trek through Daisetsuzan National Park, in the mountainous centre of Japan's northernmost main
island of Hokkaido . Like the weather, bears are an ever-present danger.

Daisetsuzan, which translates as 'great snowy mountains', is the largest national park in Japan and boasts 16 peaks higher than 2,000 metres, several of which are included in Japan's 100 Famous Peaks (the Hyakumeizan) ranking – a bucket list for many hikers.
We are attempting a section of the Daisetsuzan Traverse, which snakes along the north-south spine of the mountain range, the route cutting across exposed alpine meadows and craggy peaks, all under an expansive sky.

Hong Kong's role in nation's war of resistance against Japan to be commemorated

Hong Kong's contributions to the nation's fight against Japanese forces during the Second Sino-Japanese War will be a major theme in a series of coming activities to mark the 80th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance this year. Major battlefield trails in the countryside will get a facelift, with panels to be set up and facilities enhanced to allow hikers and visitors to learn more about the city's participation in the war and its role in rescuing allied troops while they explore wartime relics. The city's No 2 official Eric Chan Kwok-ki said on Monday the government hoped the series of commemorative activities could help boost patriotism. 'Because of its unique geographical location, Hong Kong had supported the motherland in terms of the provision of supplies and materials during wartime,' Chan said. '[We] had also been involved in operations to rescue intellectuals [fleeing from mainland China] and members of the allied army.' Chan said to let more people know about the history and the city's role, the Tourism Commission and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department would identify and enhance hiking trails with historical significance during the war.

Weather phenomenon ‘fire rainbow' seen in Hong Kong skies last week

Wispy spiralling clouds painted in hues of orange, yellow, green and blue hovered in the skies above Hong Kong last week, a rare sight that only occurs when the sun is at a high angle. The Hong Kong Observatory shared the video of the 'fire rainbow' on Monday, a meteorological phenomenon so named because it looks like a rainbow burning in the sky. 'However, it's not a true rainbow but rather an optical phenomenon called a circumhorizontal arc,' the forecaster explained in a social media post. 'It forms when sunlight refracts through hexagonal, plate-shaped ice crystals within cirrus clouds.' The formation of a circumhorizontal arc is highly dependent on the sun's angle of incidence, it added, and only has a chance of appearing when the sun is near midday. The video was first taken by a social media user, Star Fish, and was shared on the Community Weather Observing Scheme page on Facebook.

Growing China trade prompts Hong Kong joint venture for Saudi cargo carrier

Saudia Cargo, the national air cargo carrier of Saudi Arabia , is tapping into diverse sectors in China and Asia, including e-commerce, agriculture and technology, through the launch of a new venture in Hong Kong and a planned capacity expansion. 'China specifically, and the Far East in general, as a critical trade market to Saudi Arabia, will play a critical role in supporting Saudi Vision 2030 goals, and hence expanding our operations here just comes naturally,' CEO and managing director Loay Mashabi said in an interview with the Post on Monday. As the Middle Eastern country modernises and diversifies its economy to reduce its reliance on oil under the Vision 2030 plan, its ties with China have deepened, generating more opportunities. Even amid trade and geopolitical tensions like the escalating Iran-Israel conflict, trade volume – at least from the Saudi Arabia side – would not slow down, as the country's economy and projects would keep pushing ahead, Mashabi said. The company's commitment to Asia, and China specifically, was for the long haul, he added. 'If we make a decision based on a six-month disruption or one-year disruption, then we are late in the game,' he said. 'We have to build an operating model where it can maximise profits out of the upside and minimise losses in bad times.' The 'China-Saudi story' was rapidly growing across all sectors and bringing many long-term opportunities for a logistics player like Saudia, said Mashabi, who has been personally involved in the transport sector for some time, having previously served as the kingdom's deputy minister for logistics services.
