I, like millions of others who grew up in the 1990s, wanted my MTV.
Sure, we were there for the videos. But the video jockeys, known as VJs, elevated the experience with the style and spice you could see, and not just hear, like radio DJs.
Ananda Lewis was my favorite MTV VJ.
She was more than a trailblazing television host. In many ways, she was an advocate for issues of the day as well as a 'TV friend' during my most formative years. Tragically, at the age of 52, she lost her battle with breast cancer on June 11, 2025. While breast cancer deaths are on the decline, the CDC estimates 42,000+ women and 500+ men are expected to succumb to the disease this year alone.
With Ananda's passing, her legacy of charisma, intelligence and commitment to social issues should be remembered and reflected on. At a time before social media was commonplace—when only a few voices earned a platform to speak for a generation—she connected with music fans around the world, to both amplify artists' voices and spotlight critical social topics, through specials like True Life: I Am Driving While Black—all with an understanding of the power of media to drive change across the U.S. There are many reasons that her life deserves to be celebrated.
Ananda Lewis joined the MTV Network in 1997. Known simply by her first name, which means 'bliss' in Sanskrit, America got a taste of her style, voice and vibes, and she quickly became a standout host on the uber-popular Total Request Live (TRL), MTV Live, Hot Zone and MTV Jams. In the prime of the network's cultural heyday, Ananda was able to connect with audiences while introducing the latest music videos, and conducting interviews with a seemingly never-ending list of celebrities. Her storytelling brought authenticity and depth to MTV's programming.
Way before diversity was a department or a buzzword, she brought a unique multicultural look, original name and flawless style to an American youth seeking visual inspiration. In 2000, she was featured in People magazine's list of the world's '50 Most Beautiful People.'
In 2001, she launched the Ananda Lewis Show, albeit with unfortunate timing, on the day before the 9/11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A few years later, she followed up that eponymous show as the chief correspondent for an Entertainment Tonight spin-off, The Insider.

Ananda was born in Los Angeles, California, and attended the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts before heading to the nation's capital to matriculate at Howard University. As an activist with the Youth Leadership and Development Institute, she worked with teenagers across customized learning programs designed to support at-risk youth. It was that passion which led her to audition for BET's Teen Summit, a groundbreaking series focused on social issues affecting young Black Americans. As the host of Teen Summit, Lewis got the opportunity to interview a wide range of special guests, from NBA legend Kobe Bryant to First Lady Hillary Clinton, hitting new angles of journalism that directly addressed and resonated with young viewers.

In 2020, Lewis first revealed she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, sharing the news in an Instagram video with the hope to encourage women to get a mammograms. Eventually, her cancer, progressed to stage 4, yet she reflected resilience and grace as she faced her illness, and her optimism shined through as she found moments of joy in the midst of adversity.
As a Black female voice in media, Ananda Lewis's impact broke many invisible barriers. She challenged stereotypes and in many subtle ways paved the way for the generation that followed.
With the outpouring of fans' reactions to the news of her passing, her life serves as a reminder of the importance early detection and self-care, but also the fragility of life.
She is survived by her son, Langston, born in 2011.
As we remember Ananda Lewis, let's honor her by continuing the work she championed—advocating for equity, amplifying underrepresented voices, and prioritizing pushing the envelope.

My Chemical Romance Charts Its First No. 1 As Fans Revisit A Decades-Old Classic

My Chemical Romance scores its first No. 1 on Billboard's Vinyl Albums chart as Three Cheers for ... More Sweet Revenge returns after a deluxe reissue. My Chemical Romance (Photo by Theo Wargo/WireImage) My Chemical Romance recently released a special deluxe edition of its album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, turning the decades-old effort into a bestselling title once more. Fans of the beloved rock group rushed to pick up the anniversary edition of the groundbreaking set, and sales skyrocketed. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge returns to several Billboard charts this week, and even manages to lead some of the tallies it reaches. Its ascent brings My Chemical Romance back to the top spot on a multitude of rankings, and as it reappears, the set becomes the band its first champion on one particularly competitive tally. My Chemical Romance's First Vinyl No. 1 Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge leads the Vinyl Albums chart this week. The title hits No. 1 for the first time, doing so seven weeks into its scattered history on the vinyl-exclusive roster. This week marks the first time My Chemical Romance has reached the summit on the Vinyl Albums chart, as Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge finally climbs to the top. My Chemical Romance Previously Peaked at No. 2 Previously, the group missed out on the throne by just a single spot on more than one occasion. In October 2015, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love reached its runner-up peak position. A year later, The Black Parade stalled in the same No. 2 slot. Two other titles by My Chemical Romance — Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and Life on the Murder Scene — both cracked the top 10 on the vinyl ranking as well. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge's Sales Explode Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge sold 37,000 copies in the U.S. last week, according to Luminate, which is a large enough figure to make it the second-bestselling title in the country. That sum is up dramatically from the period before it was re-released as a deluxe edition, when it managed only about 1,200 pure purchases. My Chemical Romance Reaches New Peaks on Multiple Charts All of those sales help push My Chemical Romance's sophomore set to new peaks on half a dozen Billboard tallies. As it returns to each and every one of them, the project hits No. 1 not just on the Vinyl Albums list, but also on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums, and Top Alternative Albums tallies. The set, which was once a cult classic, but now should be regarded simply as a hugely successful release, also breaks into the top 10 on the Billboard 200.

‘Hamilton' star Anthony Ramos calls out Madonna for her behavior at Broadway show: ‘Door's right there'

History was happening in Manhattan — and Madonna was on her iPad. 'Hamilton' actor Anthony Ramos is calling out the pop star for her behavior when she attended the Tony-winning Broadway show years ago. During a 'Watch What Happens Live' appearance, Andy Cohen asked the performer, 33, 'Who was the most terrifying celebrity to spot in the audience during your 'Hamilton' days?' 8 Anthony Ramos on 'Watch What Happens Live.' Charles Sykes/Bravo 'She was like this the whole time,' he added on Thursday, as he pretended to look down at a screen. 'I was like, 'Damn, shorty,'' he continued. 'I'm like, 'If you not enjoying it that much, you know the door's right there. You ain't got to stay here.'' The Post reached out to a rep for Madonna for comment. Ramos starred in the original 2015 musical, taking on two roles — including playing Alexander Hamilton's son Philip, who is killed in a duel. 8 Phillipa Soo, Christopher Jackson, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Ramos attend Lin-Manuel Miranda's final performance of 'Hamilton' on Broadway. Lin-Manuel Miranda — who starred as Alexander Hamilton and also wrote the book and music — tweeted about the incident at the time. 'Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage. #noselfieforyou,' he wrote at the time. 8 Anthony Ramos performs on stage during 'Hamilton' GRAMMY performance. WireImage Despite not sharing the person's name, rumors circulated that Madonna was the culprit. The Grammy winner's publicist denied the accusations, stating: 'It's not true. She was invited backstage four different times.' 'She texted post show when they were doing their fundraising pitch,' her rep continued. 'Madonna had already made a generous donation.' 8 Madonna performs onstage during 'The Celebration Tour' at Copacabana beach on May 4, 2024. WireImage for Live Nation Jonathan Groff, who played King George III, also confirmed the rumors, sharing that she was not invited backstage 'because that b–ch was on her phone.' The 'Spring Awakening' star, 40, expressed, 'You couldn't miss it from the stage. It was a black void of the audience in front of us and her face there perfectly lit by the light of her iPhone through three-quarters of the show.' The 'Vogue' artist is no stranger to Broadway, having starred in the play 'Speed-the-Plow' by David Mamet play in 1988. Then, in 1996, Madonna portrayed Eva Perón in the film adaptation of 'Evita.' She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. 8 Madonna at the 2025 Met Gala. Getty Images Broadway vet Patti LuPone previously won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Eva on Broadway in 1979. The actress, 76, was critical of Madonna's take on the role. While on 'Watch What Happens Live' in 2017, a viewer asked LuPone, 'Did you and Madonna ever have a conversation about your two iconic performances as Evita?' 'No,' she responded. 'But she was downstairs at the Mitzi Newhouse when I was upstairs doing 'Anything Goes' in the Vivian Beaumont, and a press agent actually put a sign up that there was only one diva allowed in this theater at a time. It wasn't me! It was the press agent that did it. I don't know whether she ever found out about it. I did meet her after her opening night party, and the only thing that Madonna has ever said to me was, 'I'm taller than you.' Bada-bing!' 8 Madonna is seen attending Lempicka show on Broadway on May 18, 2024 in New York City. GC Images 'What did you think of her role in 'Evita'?' Cohen, 57, asked. 'I was on the treadmill. You know when MTV used to have music videos, right? I saw, I believe it was 'Buenos Aires,' and I thought it was a piece of s–t,' LuPone admitted. 'Madonna is a movie killer. She's dead behind the eyes. She cannot act her way out of a paper bag. She should not be in film or on stage. She's a wonderful performer for what she does, but she's not an actress. Bing!'

‘16 and Pregnant' star Whitney Purvis denied entry to son Weston's funeral after showing up late: report

'16 and Pregnant' star Whitney Purvis was denied entry to her son Weston's funeral after she arrived late, only to find out that she was not put on the guest list, according to a report. The former reality star's eldest child died at age 16 on June 2 in Gordon County, Georgia. An official cause of death remains unknown. Two weeks after confirming his death, Purvis had arrived at Weston's funeral at 4 p.m., having been told that was the scheduled start time. However, she was turned away at the door when it became clear the ceremony had taken place two hours prior — and her name wasn't even on the guest list, TMZ reports. Sources close to Purvis blame her ex-husband Weston Lewis Gosa for the mix-up, though he strongly disputes her version of events. Instead, Gosa insists he told his ex — with whom he also shares 11-year-old son River — the correct start time, and claims she turned up at 4:15 p.m., by which point the chapel doors were locked. Insiders claim that once Purvis, who appeared on the MTV show in 2009, arrived to lay her son to rest, she was told that the service was over. They alleged that Purvis' side of the family was also denied access to the service. Gosa, for his part, insists that he told Purvis that the viewing started at 2 p.m., with the service commencing at 4 p.m. sharp. He told the outlet that he called his ex a week in advance to let her know about the strict guest list, and further asserted that her mother, aunt and uncle were all in attendance as they arrived at 3 p.m. Just after 5 p.m., Gosa claimed he received angry text messaged from Purvis. In one text, he claims she had called him 'evil' for barring her from their son's memorial service. He further alleged that after Purvis claimed she had not been put on the guest list, he responded with a photo of her name being on there. The services for Weston were held in private 'due to the nature and circumstances of this tragic loss.' Gosa and his current wife, Amy, have purchased a separate urn for Whitney to house some of her son's ashes. Earlier this month, Purvis confirmed her son's death in a heartbreaking post on social media. 'This is so hard to write. My beautiful son, Weston has passed away. He was only 16 years old. Life is so cruel and unfair. I just don't understand,' she wrote on Facebook. 'Oh my baby is gone and I don't know what to do with myself. He was so perfect. This is really my worst nightmare come true.' Purvis had welcomed Weston with Gosa during the first season of MTV's '16 and Pregnant' in April 2009. She went on to welcome River in 2014, however the couple had split shortly after. The reality star went on to lose custody of both her children to their father after she was arrested in 2024 for failing to make child support payments, TMZ reported. Weston Sr., for his part, had several run-ins with the law — including arrests for driving on a suspended license and smashing electronics.
