Bangladesh recovered from 45/3 to finish strongly at 292/3
Mushfiqur Rahim anchored innings with composed 105 not out
The 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle got underway in Galle on a commanding note for Bangladesh, who put up a solid batting display on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka. After losing early wickets, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim turned the tide with a brilliant unbroken partnership, ending the day with their side firmly on top.
Put in to bat on a dry Galle surface, Bangladesh were rocked early by Sri Lanka's spinners, slipping to 45 for 3 within the first hour. Debutant Tharindu Rathnayake made an immediate impression, picking up two quick wickets including opener Shadman Islam. But that early momentum faded as Bangladesh's middle-order brought their experience into play.
SL vs BAN, 1st Test Day 1: Highlights
From a position of pressure, Shanto and Mushfiqur stitched together a remarkable stand, adding 247 runs for the fourth wicket by stumps. The Bangladesh skipper was aggressive against spin, frequently using his feet to disrupt lengths and pierce the infield. Mushfiqur, steady and composed, anchored his end with minimal risk and quiet efficiency.
The duo's centuriesâ€'Shanto unbeaten on 136 and Mushfiqur on 105â€'were a product of calculated batting and smart rotation. Their partnership helped Bangladesh post 292 for 3 at the close of play, flipping the momentum of the day entirely after a tricky start.
Sri Lanka, despite early breakthroughs and the emotional occasion of Angelo Mathews' farewell Test, failed to maintain sustained pressure with the ball. Their spin-heavy attack grew less effective as the day wore on, with Bangladesh capitalising on every loose spell.
Day 1 clearly belonged to the visitorsâ€'and they've laid the foundation for a big first innings in what marks the beginning of a long Test journey in the new WTC cycle.
Sri Lanka opted to use only five bowlers interestingly and it was a difficult day for Jayasuriya and Tharindu who bowled 61 overs between them but had only two wickets to show for their vigil.

Dutch player Quincy Promes extradited from Dubai in cocaine smuggling case
Dutch soccer player Quincy Promes was being extradited Friday from Dubai to the Netherlands, where he faces a prison sentence for involvement in cocaine smuggling, the prosecutor's office told The Associated Press. The Dutch public prosecution service confirmed to the AP that Promes was en route to the Netherlands, in Dutch custody. Promes, who scored seven goals in 50 international matches for the Netherlands before legal issues derailed his international career, was convicted last year of complicity in cocaine smuggling and sentenced in his absence to six years in prison. Amsterdam District Court ruled that Promes was involved in the import and export of hundreds of kilograms (pounds) of cocaine in 2020. His lawyers told judges he denied the allegations. In 2023, Promes was found guilty of stabbing his cousin in the leg and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Both of Promes' convictions are currently under appeal. Promes, a 33-year-old former player for Ajax and Sevilla, had been playing for Spartak Moscow and living in Russia from 2021 until last year, when he was reportedly arrested in Dubai around the time that Spartak was there for friendly games. More recently, he had been playing with United FC, a second-tier club in Dubai. IND vs ENG: Did India backpedal on Shardul Thakur? Gautam Gambhir's statement before Australia series offers contrast
Shubman Gill, Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy during a nets session at Headingly. (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: In a twist to India's selection strategy, Shardul Thakur was named in the playing XI for the first Test against England at Headingley, raising eyebrows over the team's sudden pivot from recent choices. Just a few months ago, ahead of the Australia tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir had indicated that the selectors had moved on from the Mumbai all-rounder. Live Score: India vs England, 1st Test Day 1 The Indian team, now under the leadership of Shubman Gill, is entering a new red-ball era after the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. But the inclusion of 33-year-old Thakur as the fourth pacer alongside Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna is being seen as a possible contradiction to the forward-looking stance taken earlier. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Before India left for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Gambhir had openly backed youngster Nitish Kumar Reddy over Thakur. "It is also about moving forward," Gambhir had said at the pre-departure press conference. "We have picked the best squad who can do the job for us. Nitish Reddy, we all know how incredibly talented he is and if given an option, he will deliver for us." Poll Has the selection of Shardul Thakur contradicted the earlier selection strategy? Yes, it seems contradictory No, it's a tactical decision Thakur, however, now finds himself in the thick of action in England - a country where he has previously performed well, taking 10 wickets and scoring 173 runs in four matches on the last tour. While Gambhir's words then suggested a changing of the guard, India's team sheet in Leeds reveals a more pragmatic selection - perhaps dictated by Thakur's past success in English conditions, or a shift in thinking. 'Wait until August to see what kind of style it's going to be': Shubman Gill ahead of Headingley Test India XI for 1st Test vs England: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (w), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story.
