
'Was he being ironic?': King Creosote at the Albert Halls

'Was he being ironic?' the woman beside me asked. You could understand her uncertainty. After an hour of ringing, at times joyous music interspersed with comic grumbling and daft anecdotes, Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote,had just returned to the stage to get some things off his chest.
'These views are purely my own. They do not reflect anyone else, probably in the room … They're just mine. I'm just having a go at things,' he told us before launching into a song he's been working on since 2021, entitled Cattle, Sheep, Chickens, a slightly scattershot lyric that did suggest he was worried about fluoride in the water and 15-minute cities and in which he told us that he'd been called a tree-hugger, a far right anti-vaxxer and a conspiracy theorist in a tin foil hat.
And then came Dare I Hope I'm One of the Good Guys, a list-style song that rattled through a number of, shall we say, 'controversial' characters, all of whom Anderson seemed to suggest qualified for the epithet. They ranged from Van Morrison and JK Rowling to Right Said Fred and Eric Clapton. But it may have been the mentions for Mel Gibson, Alex Jones, Tucker Carlson and Neil Oliver - 'one of the best guys' - that had my gig neighbour scratching her head.
These days Anderson is still living in the East Neuk, but largely offline and off the grid. He's only using paper money and at last year's Celtic Connections he finished his performance by railing against globalisation.
Clear then that he is, as they say, on something of a journey.
He spent much of this evening jokily telling us he was keeping his lip buttoned or telling daft anecdotes that, he hoped, wouldn't get him 'cancelled'.

At the end of a very rum evening, I guess, a head-scratching mixture of beauty and bewilderment, starting early with the support act from Keny 'KY-10' Drew on modular synth. He was accompanied by Des Lawson on Korg and UDO keyboards, with Anderson himself 'messing around at the back.'
The result was 30 minutes of largely instrumental music (with some jellyfish-flavoured sci-fi voiceover) that had a lovely bubbling warmth to it. Pushing buttons and knobs, Anderson had to put his glasses on just to see what he was doing. A rather sweet human detail. I know the feeling.
But, really, if you've come to see King Creosote it's because you want to hear him sing. And so the main part of the evening saw Anderson, Lawson and Drew (this time on visuals) reassemble to jump back and forth through the extensive King Creosote back catalogue, starting with Aurora Boring Alias - one of the tracks he recorded with Jon Hopkins for the Honest Words EP in 2011 - before jumping back to 2000 and Something Beginning With D.
Does Anderson himself want to hear himself sing, I did wonder at times? There were moments when he stepped back from the mic, his vocal becoming a slightly muted texture in the mix. As a result Blue Marbled Elm Trees, one of the most beautiful songs on his last album I DES, doesn't quite hit home as hard as it should.
But when he comes in close - on tracks like Kirby Grips, an absolutely transcendent My Favourite Girl and Bats in the Attic, the final song of the set - you fully hear the yearn and ache of that glorious keening voice. At those points the night reached for the stars.
And then the encore. The Stirling audience received it politely. Maybe they were all wondering if these songs were ironic too.

Ellen DeGeneres shares a rare look at her English countryside home after leaving the U.S.
Ellen DeGeneres shared yet another brief look at her life in the English countryside after fleeing the U.S. with her wife Portia de Rossi. The 67-year-old comedienne and her 52-year-old wife sold their property in Carpinteria, California for a whopping $96 million in August 2024. Just a few months later, they both left America to a home they previously purchased in the Cotswolds region of the U.K., after the election of Donald Trump. Back in April, she shared a rare glimpse of her new abode, sharing a snap of Portia taking a picture herself of a rainbow. Over the last few months, she's been sharing videos and images of the new sheep the couple had acquired for their farm, and it seems they prefer the home to the land. She shared a new video on Instagram Monday that showed a few of the sheep milling about inside their home. The first part of the video showed four sheep inside the home - with the floor-to-ceiling doors wide open. One of the sheep even tried sniffing around the couple's small dog, but the pooch clearly wasn't a fan, quickly getting out of her tiny dog bed and scampering away from the other sheep as well. Portia can be heard in the background saying, 'They're inside?' A calm Ellen responded, 'Yeah, they're inside.' The second part of the video was filmed by Portia, who caught one of the sheep entering their home, seemingly named 'Bernie.' 'Um... oh no. Bernie, Bernie, you can't be in here... that's a good girl,' Portia said, moving closer to the sheep to usher it out of the home. The video shared Monday had over 54K likes, and came a few days after she shared another video showing the sheep trying to get into their chicken coop. 'These... this is what's happening now,' Ellen began in the video, before turning the camera to show the sheep invading her chicken coop. 'Hey! That's not your food! Hey! Get out of there. That's not your food, come on, that's for chickens,' she told her flock of sheep. While she has been in the U.K. for months, she was most recently the target of many jokes at the hands of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. He was hosting the annual Robin Hood charity gala at the Javits Center in New York City, when he took aim at Ellen. MacFarlane joked that she, 'left right after the election, and now she's the nicest person in France.' During a stand-up show last year, DeGeneres addressed the claims of her being mean, explaining, 'I can be demanding and impatient and tough. I am a strong woman. I am many things, but I am not mean.'

AI and photo filters lead to people becoming boring-looking
The actress, who stars in forthcoming film The Naked Gun, said she feels 'freedom' in walking a red carpet without make-up on. She told Harper's Bazaar: 'I think that with AI technology and filters, people are becoming kind of boring-looking. I want to challenge beauty norms. I've always been a rebel. 'It's freedom to know you can walk on a red carpet without a stitch of make-up on. I mean, why can't I? Men do it all the time.' Anderson, whose career has been experiencing a resurgence in recent years, appears in The Naked Gun reboot alongside Irish actor Liam Neeson – due to be released this summer. 'It's going to show a different side of me,' she told the magazine. 'I feel every film I do lately is healing various parts of me. And you need a big, messy life to draw from if you want to make these kinds of things interesting.' She went on: 'I love being in a creative space. That's my happy place. I love poetry, film and music, and I feel like I'm just trying to live this part of my life as authentically as possible. 'I don't know what my next incarnation will be, but right now, I want to peel it back. Clean up a little bit and just see: who am I?' Anderson, who was a Playboy model before being propelled to fame in her role as lifeguard CJ Parker in Baywatch in the 1990s, has two sons with ex-husband Tommy Lee. In 2022, her private life was shone under the spotlight once again, with the TV series Pam & Tommy dramatising their whirlwind romance. Anderson, who appears on the cover of the July/August issue of Harper's Bazaar, told the magazine: 'I feel like because I've been given this second chance – not everybody gets one – I get to do it my way.'
