Liverpool fans revel in Trent Alexander-Arnold's 'disasterclass' Real Madrid debut - as Spanish newspaper rip into his £10m early arrival fee

Daily Maila day ago

Liverpool fans have mocked Trent Alexander-Arnold after his debut for Real Madrid, reveling in their former star's difficult outing following his bitter exit.
The Scouser waved goodbye to his boyhood club at the end of the season, having only recently put an end to a year-long speculation over his future as his Anfield contract wound down.
The Premier League champions managed to secure a £10million fee for the 26-year-old but his departure still left a sour taste in the mouths of many. As a result, scores of Reds fans tuned in to witness his maiden appearance for Los Blancos, which came in their World Club Cup opener against Al-Hilal on Wednesday night.
And they were not disappointed - particularly in the first half - as the England star struggled to find his passing range and was weak in the tackle.
'He thinks he has a chance to win the Ballon D'or,' wrote one fan on X, in reference to a 2024 interview in which he stated his aim of becoming the first right-back to win the prestigious award.
Another made reference to Alexander-Arnold's comments about training with his new Madrid team-mates this week, words that some construed as thinly veiled digs at his old Liverpool colleagues.
They wrote: 'The ball moves so fast here.'
Responding to a post of a video that professed to show all of Alexander-Arnold's mistakes against Al-Hilal, one user on X pointed out an instance when the full-back was caught high up the pitch - positioning that nearly cost his side a goal.
'And here he is in a counter attack against him team,' the user noted, circling Alexander-Arnold's position.
A fourth took the chance to swipe of two of the Three Lions' right-back options, commenting: 'Bro's worst than [Kyle] Walker.'
Liverpool fans on social media were not the only ones displeased with Alexander-Arnold's first outing. Spanish outlet AS gave him a blank rating. He was one of only three stars to get the treatment.
In their report they also stated that the LaLiga giants did not pay a fee to acquire the defender early so that he can take his time to adapt to his new surroundings.
On Wednesday, in his 65 minutes on the pitch, the Englishman won just 25 per cent of his ground duels and lost possession 12 times.
However, Alexander-Arnold showed his quality by delivering the most passes into the final third (12), with him showing some improvement after the interval.
Post-match, he insisted that he knows he 'made the right decision' to join Real Madrid after making his debut.
'It's the first time that I've moved clubs so I didn't know what to expect. I had no expectations coming into this,' Alexander-Arnold told Mail Sport.
'It's a big change and it's different but I'm loving every single minute of it and in my mind and my heart, I know that I made the right decision for me.'
The game started at 3pm local time in conditions that were far from ideal for football, with temperatures in excess of 30 degrees celsius and high levels of humidity.
'Yeah, I found it very challenging (in that heat). It's very different from England,' Alexander-Arnold admitted.
'But it was a very proud moment for me. I'm very happy to have made my debut. It's something that most, if not all players, dream of in their life. I'm incredibly proud of the achievement but of course there's some disappointment (with the result) with the mentality that comes as a Madrid player.
'You want and expect to win every single game but of course, new coach, some new players and new ideas - there's some positives to take from it, especially in the second half and the foundation has been built to go and win the next game now,' added the 26-year-old.

Five prospects to watch on Yafai vs Rodriguez Jr undercard – including Olympian and ‘world-class' knockout artist

As Galal Yafai continues his charge towards a world title, a new wave of unbeaten prospects is ready to make a statement on Saturday's undercard in Birmingham. While most of the spotlight will fall on Yafai's headlining bout against Francisco Rodriguez Jr – his first defence of the WBC interim flyweight title – the undercard is packed with rising talent eager to follow in his footsteps. Among them: an Olympian, a knockout artist, and a fighter tipped as a future world champion by Eddie Hearn himself. Pat Brown – 1-0 (1 knockout) Like headliner Galal Yafai, cruiserweight Brown represented Team GB at the Olympics, competing in Paris last summer. While he exited in the first round of the heavyweight competition, expectations remain high for the Manchester fighter in the pro ranks. Brown made his debut in March with a fourth-round stoppage of Federico Grandone (7-4-2) and returns on Saturday against Croatia's Ivan Duka (5-5), with another outing already pencilled in for Manchester next month. Backed by Matchroom and close with fellow pro Dave Allen, Brown could be set for a busy 2025. Hamza Uddin – 4-0 (1 KO) Flyweight Uddin was a standout in the amateur ranks and part of the Team GB set-up before choosing to turn professional late last year. Since debuting with a third-round stoppage of Santiago San Eusebio, the 21-year-old British-Bangladeshi has consistently stepped up – fighting opponents with winning records and moving quickly to eight-round bouts. Trained by his father Raj and managed by Sam Jones, Uddin takes on Leandro Jose Blanc (8-2) on Saturday. With Matchroom behind him and home support in the Midlands, he's tipped for a rapid rise. Aaron Bowen – 5-0 (3 KOs) Middleweight Bowen returns to familiar ground on Saturday, fighting in Birmingham where he won Commonwealth bronze in 2022. The Coventry fighter has made a strong start to his pro career, racking up five wins and three knockouts, including stoppages against Wilmer Baron (6-1) and James Todd (4-5-2). Now 26, Bowen has been with Matchroom since turning pro and is steadily building a fanbase in the Midlands. He faces experienced Ukrainian Mykola Vovk (15-7) in his latest step up. Giorgio Visioli – 7-0 (6 KOs) One of the most talked-about prospects on the card, Visioli enters with six knockouts in seven fights and serious momentum. Promoter Hearn has described the super featherweight as 'world class' and predicted he'll be in the British title picture by the end of the year. Listed on The Independent and DAZN's 'Prospects of the Year', the 23-year-old from Aldershot seems unfazed by the growing attention. 'I go into each fight treating it like a world title,' he told BBC Sport. 'All it takes is one punch to derail you.' Visioli takes on Argentina's Elias Federico Duguet (7-1-1) over eight rounds. Ibraheem Sulaimaan – 7-0 (4 KOs) Nicknamed 'The Spider', Birmingham's Sulaimaan continues his steady rise at super-featherweight. The 24-year-old earned his spot on the Matchroom roster after impressing on earlier undercards and has since notched up four stoppages in seven wins.

Kylian Mbappe leaves hospital after missing Real Madrid's first Club World Cup match with acute gastroenteritis

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has left hospital after missing his side's first game at the newly-expanded Club World Cup after suffering from gastroenteritis. Mbappe, 26, was a surprise omission from the first starting line-up to be named by new manager Xabi Alonso against Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal on Wednesday. The Frenchman was sorely missed by his team-mates as they drew 1-1 after Federico Valverde missed a golden chance to win the encounter in stoppage time when his penalty was saved. Following the match, Madrid released a statement on Thursday in which they clarified why Mbappe was absent. The club said that he had been taken to hospital on the day of their match against Al-Hilal to undergo tests, adding that he had made a return to the team's camp. On Friday, Real also confirmed that Mbappe was in the team hotel and undertaking aerobic work as he recovered from illness. Manager Xabi Alonso is unsure if he will be fit enough to feature in his side's next game When prompted to give an update on Mbappe's health on Tuesday, Alonso said: 'Kylian was feeling a bit better in the morning, but not good enough because it's too hot. 'We're going to wait for him until the last moment, we'll decide tomorrow.' After the draw against Al-Hilal, the Spaniard added: 'I don't know if Mbappe will be back for the next game. 'We'll see. He wasn't doing well in the last two days. He's sick.' In Mbappe's place, Alonso opted to start 21-year-old striker Gonzalo Garcia who scored 25 goals in 36 matches for Real Madrid Castilla last season. He notched the opener against Al-Hilal on Wednesday before former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves ensured the spoils were shared.

Your Guardian Sport weekend: England v India, Club World Cup, tennis and NBA

Day two of the first Test gets under way with Rob Smyth and James Wallace your over-by-over-hosts. India are seeking a first series win in England since 2007, having been held to a 2-2 draw last time out, a garland their new red-ball skipper, Shubman Gill, ranks higher than going all the way in the Indian Premier League. 'You don't get many opportunities as a captain to be able to come to England and you get to have a crack at the IPL every year,' says one of the IPL's poster boys and title winner with Gujarat Giants in 2022. 'In my opinion winning a Test series in England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa is bigger.' Ali Martin, Andy Bull and Simon Burnton are our reporting team at Headingley. 'It's the biggest five days in our sport – our shop window,' says leading jockey William Buick of the glittering five days of Royal Ascot. The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (3.40pm) is the highlight of the sun-baked meeting's final day. Kevin Ryan's Inisherin was a brilliant winner of the Commonwealth Cup over the course and distance 12 months ago while French raider Lazzat won his first six starts for Jerome Reynier and having bolted up back over six furlongs at Chantilly has been snapped up by the powerful Wathnan Racing operation. Under a broiling sun in west London, conditions have been particularly gruelling as some of the world's leading players gear up for Wimbledon. Top seed and 2023 winner Carlos Alcaraz endured three hours and 23 energy-sapping minutes in beating compatriot Jaume Munar on Thursday. The match may have been two hours shorter than his five-set French Open final win over Jannik Sinner earlier this month but the five-time grand slam champion suffered as temperatures soared to 32C. After a 15th straight win, the longest winning run of his career so far, a near-exhausted Alcaraz admitted: 'It was a really tough battle.' Tumaini Carayol has all the action covered. An unfamiliar England face France for Saturday's non-cap international. There are five uncapped names in Steve Borthwick's makeshift squad, with three set to start as call-ups to Andy Farrell's British & Irish Lions have have given the head coach the chance to experiment. The late addition of Jack van Poortvliet to the Lions party means there will be 14 players unavailable when England run out for the final time before the summer tour to Argentina and the United States. Michael Aylwin reports from Twickenham. The European Under-21 Championship 2023 winners face a rematch with Spain, who they defeated to lift the trophy two years ago. But Lee Carsley's side approach the quarter-final in patchy form having followed up last Sunday's goalless draw with Slovenia with a disappointing 2-1 loss against Germany to round off the group stage. Slovenia's defeat to the Czech Republic in the other match in the group was enough to secure Carsley's side passage to the last-eight tie in Trnava, Slovakia. Will Unwin keeps the updates flowing while Ed Aarons reports. Our columnist considers the cult of personality at the revamped Club World Cup – how the individual walk-outs at the start of matches offer further proof, if any were needed, that Fifa is failing to understand that football remains a team sport – just ask Paris Saint-Germain, who unlocked European success by ditching their superstars. Rob Smyth and Taha Hashim take up the over-by-over baton on day three at Headingley. Win against India in the coming weeks, then reclaim the Ashes in Australia and Ben Stokes would go down as one of his country's greatest skippers, but he is not ready to think in those terms. 'There's always a different buzz coming up against India and Australia in particular, purely because of how big those series are,' he says. 'Away from the dressing room, we know what these series mean compared to other ones. But defining a career as England captain isn't something that I really think about. If that's what I'm really bothered about, it's just completely and utterly selfish and that ain't me.' Tanya Aldred helms our rolling blog and will no doubt be keeping a weather eye on Jofra Archer's exploits for Sussex against Durham. England's paceman has been beset by a litany of injury problems and played the last of his 13 Tests in February 2021. It is hoped he will make his first-class return, part of a plan that could lead to him being restored to Ben Stokes' squad at some point during a five-match series against India. There has been an understandable sense of caution about Archer's latest rehabilitation, which was further delayed by a broken thumb, but the bowler himself has made his own intentions clear – at one stage floating a hurried return in last month's one-off game against Zimbabwe. The Indiana Pacers stormed to a 108-91 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday to level the NBA finals at three games apiece and set up a decisive Game 7 in Oklahoma City in the early hours on Monday. The Dutchman joined City from Milan last week in a deal worth an initial £46.5m as part of Pep Guardiola's rebuild in response to their disappointing 2024-25 season.
