Iran's centrifuge production sites hit by Israeli strikes, IAEA confirms

Tehran: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that two Iranian centrifuge production facilities, TESA Karaj workshop and Tehran Research Centre, were hit in recent strikes.
"The IAEA has information that two centrifuge production facilities in Iran, the TESA Karaj workshop and the Tehran Research Centre, were hit. Both sites were previously under IAEA monitoring and verification as part of the JCPOA," IAEA wrote on X.
"At the Tehran site, one building was hit where advanced centrifuge rotors were manufactured and tested. At Karaj, two buildings were destroyed where different centrifuge components were manufactured," IAEA added om X.
The Embassy of Iran in India on Wednesday shared a statement made by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where he said that they (IAEA) did not have any proof that Iran is going to make nuclear weapons.
In a post on X, the Embassy said, "Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, admits that Iran was not going to make a nuclear weapon. "What we reported was that we did not have any proof of a systematic effort (by Iran) to move toward a nuclear weapon. "
In the interview, Director General Grossi answering the question on nuclear weapons in Iran said, "What we informed and what we reported was that we did not have, as in coincidence with some of the sources you mentioned there, that we did not have any proof of a systematic effort to move into a nuclear weapon."
According to a previous report by the Times of Israel citing Hebrew media, it was reported on Sunday that Israel discovered that Iranian scientists had conducted successful experiments in the design process of a nuclear weapon, bringing it weeks away from being able to produce a bomb.
Times of Israel reported that this "golden information" was presented by intelligence officials to the political leadership before the decision was made to carry out preemptive strikes on Friday, along with the concern that Israel didn't know everything and that Tehran could be at an even more advanced stage in building a nuclear bomb than the available information showed, Army Radio reported, citing unnamed security officials.
Meawhile, the US State Department on Tuesday (local time) reaffirmed the Trump administration's stance on Iran's nuclear programme, emphasising that "Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon," amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.

IAEA warns of nuclear disaster

UNITED NATIONS: The Middle East risks a nuclear catastrophe if Israel strikes Iran's southern nuclear plant of Bushehr, the head of the UN atomic watchdog warned on Friday. Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told the UN Security Council that he has not yet detected radiation resulting from Israel's week-long military campaign against Iran, including attacks on nuclear sites. But he said that a strike on Bushehr, the Middle East's first civilian nuclear reactor, would spell the most serious consequences as it contains thousands of kilogrammes of nuclear material. "Countries of the region have reached out directly to me over the past few hours to express their concerns and I want to make it absolutely and completely clear — in case of an attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant, a direct hit would result in a very high release of radioactivity," Grossi said. Grossi warned of equally dire consequences even if Israel strikes the lines that supply electricity to Bushehr, saying such disabling of power could trigger a meltdown. In a worst case scenario, evacuations and orders to take shelter would need to be issued for areas within several hundred kilometres of Bushehr. The population would also need to take iodine and may see restrictions in food supply, Grossi said. Meanhile, European powers began talks with Iran in Geneva on Friday, talking of a window of opportunity for a diplomatic solution while the United States weighs whether to join its ally Israel's bombing campaign. Israel came under renewed Iranian missile fire after carrying out dozens of strikes overnight on targets, including a suspected nuclear research centre. Top European diplomats opened talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Geneva, saying they wanted to offer a "diplomatic solution" to the war, now on its eighth day. Ahead of the talks, French President Emmanuel Macron said it was "essential to prioritise" a return to negotiations and said European powers would offer Iran a "diplomatic solution". The foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany; and the European Union's top diplomat have urged de-escalation, with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy saying the next two weeks are "a window... to achieve a diplomatic solution". Speaking to the UN Human Rights Council earlier, Araghchi condemned Israel for launching its military action while Iran was still in nuclear talks with the United States. "We were attacked in the midst of an ongoing diplomatic process," the Iranian minister said. As the Security Council prepared to discuss the war later on Friday, UN chief Antonio Guterres appealed to all parties to "give peace a chance". Israel's military said on Friday it struck missile launchers in its latest attack on Iran. In Israel, sirens sounded in the afternoon after missiles were launched from Iran for the second time on Friday and rescuers reported two wounded, including a 16-year-old in serious condition. A military official said that "approximately 20 missiles were launched towards Israel" in the latest salvo. — AFP -

India to evacuate citizens of Nepal, Sri Lanka from Iran

Tehran: The Indian Embassy in Iran has said that the embassy will make efforts to evacuate citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka. The embassy noted that the efforts will be made at the request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka. "On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy's evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka," the Indian Embassy in Iran posted on X. The Indian government has launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran, given the deteriorating situation as a result of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Saturday that, so far, 517 Indian nationals have returned to India from Iran under Operation Sindhu. Jaiswal stated that a special flight from Turkmenistan's Ashgabat carrying Indians from Iran arrived in New Delhi on June 21. In a post on X, Jaiswal stated, "Operation Sindhu continues. A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in New Delhi at 0300 hrs on 21st June, bringing Indians from Iran home. With this, so far 517 Indian nationals from Iran have returned home under Operation Sindhu." The conflict between Israel and Iran entered its ninth day on Saturday. The conflict started after Israel, on June 13, launched a massive airstrike on Iranian military and nuclear sites, dubbed "Operation Rising Lion". In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a large-scale drone and missile operation, 'Operation True Promise 3', targeting Israeli fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply centres. It is pertinent to note here that it is not the first time that the Indian government has launched an operation to evacuate citizens from another country. Earlier in 2023, India launched Operation Kaveri to evacuate its citizens during violent military clashes in Sudan. India had launched Operation Ajay to evacuate Indian nationals from Israel during the Israel-Hamas conflict in 2023. Operation Ganga was launched by the Indian government in 2022 to evacuate Indian nationals when war erupted between Russia and Ukraine. Earlier in 2021, Indian government launched Operation Devi Shakti to evacuate Indian citizens from Afghanistan after Taliban takeover. India launched Operation Samudra Seta to evacuate Indians through sea during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. India launched Operation Raahat to evacuate citizens after civil conflict erupted in Yemen in 2015. Earlier in 2011, India launched Operation Safe Homecoming to evacuate Indian nationals during civil war in Arab Spring in Libya.
