Malaysia bids farewell to giant pandas Fu Wa, Feng Yi
The van carrying giant pandas Fu Wa and Feng Yi leaving Zoo Negara where a large crowd gathered this morning to bid farewell after their 11-year stay here.
SEPANG : Giant pandas Fu Wa and Feng Yi were officially sent home to China today, concluding their stay in Malaysia after 11 years.
The pandas arrived here on May 21, 2014, under the terms of the International Giant Panda Conservation Cooperation Project.
The momentous send-off held at the Animal Hotel, KLIA was attended by natural resources and environmental sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, ministry secretary-general Ching Too Kim and representatives from the Chinese embassy.
In a statement, the ministry said the collaboration stands as a symbol of the close friendship between Malaysia and China, and reflects their shared commitment to sustainability.
'Therefore, Malaysia will continue to be committed to working with China in the conservation of the giant panda species and this collaboration is hoped to further strengthen the relationship between Malaysia and China, both diplomatically and economically,' the ministry said.
It added that Malaysia has recorded extraordinary success in its ex-situ conservation efforts, including the birth of three panda cubs from the pair during their time here.
All three panda cubs – Nuan Nuan, Yi Yi, and Sheng Yi – have since been returned to China in accordance with the agreement. Nuan Nuan was repatriated on Nov 14, 2017, while Yi Yi and Sheng Yi followed on Aug 29, 2023.
According to the ministry, the conservation partnership is set to continue through a new agreement signed on April 16, during Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent official visit to Malaysia.
'This renewed agreement allows Malaysia to receive another pair of giant pandas for a period of 10 years, from 2025 to 2035. Their arrival is expected later this year,' the ministry said.

JOHOR BARU, June 22 — The Johor Department of Environment (DOE) did not detect any readings for ammonia at all monitoring locations around the area of the lorry and engine oil store fire at Jalan Cenderai 27, Taman Kota Puteri, Masai, here this morning. Johor Department of Environment director Dr Mohd Famey Yusoff said this included the fire control post which recorded non-hazardous ammonia readings during monitoring conducted last night. Johor Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 chief, Senior Fire Superintendent I Zaipulbahri Mat Rusok was reported to have said that the operation in Division 1 following the fire at the store was completed at 4am this morning. However, he said that extinguishing work at Division 2 at the incident location was still continuing due to difficulties due to the obstruction of large and numerous oil drums, making it difficult for firefighters to access the fire to extinguish the fire. A total of five premises were burnt in the incident involving an area of about 1,000 square metres, including 15 vehicles that were also destroyed. The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations centre received an emergency call on the incident at 12.54pm and a total of 34 personnel and assets from several fire stations including volunteer teams were rushed to the scene. — Bernama

Fighter jets staging low-level flights in Subang airspace ahead of RMAF chief's retirement parade
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) -- Fighter jets, transport aircraft and helicopters of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will be conducting low tactical flights over selected areas, particularly in the Subang airspace, starting today until next Thursday. According to a statement from the RMAF today, the flights are in conjunction with the Retirement Parade of the 20th RMAF chief General Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan, which will be held at the Subang Air Base on June 26. 'In this regard, the RMAF would like to inform the public not to be alarmed or worried if they observe low-flying aircraft,' the statement read. Mohd Asghar Khan has served in the RMAF for over 42 years since joining on July 18, 1983, as a Cadet Officer at the Royal Military College (RMC). He began his career as a fighter pilot in 1985 and has flown the A4 Skyhawk, F-5E, MiG-29N and Sukhoi 30MKM fighter aircraft. Mohd Asghar Khan has held the position of RMAF chief since March 7, 2022, succeeding General Tan Sri Ackbal Abdul Samad, who retired mandatorily. — Bernama

Administrative building destroyed in blaze at Cheras school
No casualties were reported in the blaze at SM Sains Alam Shah in Cheras early this morning. KUALA LUMPUR : An administrative building at SM Sains Alam Shah in Cheras was destroyed in a fire early today. The Kuala Lumpur fire and rescue operations centre said it received an emergency call about the incident at 4.15am. 'In response, 44 firefighters and officers from the Bandar Tun Razak, Jalan Hang Tuah, Cheras, and Sentul fire and rescue stations were dispatched to the scene, along with seven fire engines and an ambulance,' it said in a statement. The building in question had housed several facilities, including the teachers' room, meeting room, records room, laboratory, and other offices. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 5.08am, and it was fully extinguished by 6.18am. No casualties were reported. The cause of the fire and the estimated damage remain under investigation.
