SEVERAL iconic family favourite vehicles from the last three decades have a new worth today.
From the Ford to Vauxhall, these cars that were once common among British families in the 1970s, '80s and '90s still have value in 2025.

Austin Allegro (1973-1982)
Value today: £1,200 (Allegro 1.0 saloon) to £7,600 (Allegro Equipe, concours condition)
The Allegro was one of the popular vehicle choices for car buyers with families, as well as being company vehicles for employers.
In typical shades of Russet brown and Applejack green of the seventies, the Allegro brings a nostalgia.
This is despite its known maladies as a vehicle in the contemporary world, and even back in the day.
They have been justified to be a worthy classic car and collector item, due not only to the Austin brand, but also its unique Hydragas suspension and style.
Editor of the UK Hagerty Price Guide, John Mayhead, has witnessed the steady rise in value of all Austin Allegro variants over the past decade whilst monitoring the value of classic cars in auction prices and policyholder quotes.
He said: "Last year, only 7 per cent of all models in the Hagerty Price Guide rose in value."
Ford Escort Mk2 - Mk4 (1974 - 1990)
Value today: £600 (Mk 4 Escort L) to £93,600 (Escort Mk 2 RS1800, concours)
From the late 1960s up to the 2000s, families in Britain were likely to have one of the five generations of Ford Escorts.
Children could enjoy riding in the back of these vehicles, whether in the lower trimmed Mk2 or more spacious and utilitarian third and fourth generations.

The Mk3 and Mk4 had a transverse engine layout, with a hatchback style rather than saloon.
Models ranged from three and five-door hatches, as well as cabrio or sport versions with the XR3, XR3i, and RS1600i variants.
To this day, there's still a lot to admire about the Escort, particularly with the Fast Ford racing and performance versions.
They are highly collectable with a thriving club scene, and base models can still be found for cheap at around £3,000.
Reliant Scimitar (1975 - 1986)
Value today: £3,300 to £9,000 (GTE SE5a)
The Reliant Scimitar GTE was an attractive choice of vehicle for those wanting something more exciting than a saloon or estate, but also looking for practicality.
It became a performance motor offering a four-seat layout to appear as a family car too.
In addition to the layout, the GTE provides a glass hatchback and proper boot, fibreglass body more durable against rust and well-proven Ford mechanics.
Cost around £2,300 in 1973, the GTE became a viable cheaper alternative to something like an Audi 100 or 3.0-litre Granada GXL.
Since last year, the Scimitar GTE has seen a slight dip in value, but remained relatively stagnant since 2016.
John adds that some have been restored to a very high standard: "Lots of very cheap restoration cases available, but not for the faint-hearted."
Austin Montego (1984 - 1995)
Value today: £800 (Montego 1.3 saloon) to £11,000 (MG Montego Turbo, concours)
Montegos have been considered the "most ordinary" of vehicles, but were certainly among the most popular of its time.
A solid family car by Austin that had built its reputation for decades,
Specifically, as a blue saloon built in 1989, they could regularly be seen parked in driveways or out on roads.
Whilst they where just about everywhere in the 1980s, they became almost extinct by the 1990s.
The Montego has increased in value as a vehicle model in 2025, following a flat period.

Citroen BX (1982 - 1994)
Value today: £900 (S1 1.4 hatchback) to £10,100 (BX Sport, concours)
This French saloon spanned the years of 1982 to 1994, with a styling that became a major success.
The BX's lineup of XUD four-cylinders were among the best frugal diesels of the '80s.
Whilst demand for the Citroen BX was not exceptionally high in the UK, the model reached great heights in France.
A well-preserved 1992 BX 16S even sold for over €47,000 in 2021.
Renault Espace Mk1 (1984 - 1991)
Value today: £1,100 to £12,400 (Turbo D)
Despite famously being a flop when first released for sale in 1984, the Espace soon became a European favourite as parents recognised its value.
With several back seats, it was one of the easiest cars for loading kids in the back, who were able to thereby see through the vehicle's large glass windows.
Families warmed up to this Renault's bold box shape, following 12 months of struggle for sales of this multi-purpose vehicle.
John suggested: "Early versions of this groundbreaking vehicle are beginning to become very collectable.
"Now rare in any configuration, they are not expensive cars and if you can find one, a fair runner could be under £2,000."

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 (1983 - 1992)
Value today: £900 (Driver) to £23,800 (GTI 16v)
The VW Golf GTI Mk2 was an exciting release for car-loving families, coming with five doors and more space for practical and better riding.
It was a reliable car too with its Volkswagen reputation, better fuel economy and improved comfort.
It was also capable of reaching more than 130mph.
John said: "For a long time, Mk 2 Golf values lagged far behind their Mk 1 predecessors, especially in the iconic GTI configuration, but in the last couple of years, they have gained ground.
"There's a lot of love for this model, and although prices are down a little from their 2023 high, the general trend has been growth for the past 12 years."
Ford Mondeo Mk1 (1993 - 2000)
Value today: £800 (first-generation 1.6) to £8,500 (ST220)
After their release in 1993, Mondeos became a common sight on roads through the mid-90s.
They served as private motors, company vehicles, police cars, trade workhorses, and even appeared in the British Touring Car Championship.
"Excluding motorsport variants, the Mondeo is a very affordable classic with even performance versions being available for under £5,000," John said.
They are likely to become increasingly collectable as first generation cars that are more of a rarity.
Rover 75 (1999 - 2005)
Value today: £900 (2.0 CDTi) to £16,100 (MG ZT, concours)
The Rover 75 featured a retro design both internally and externally, providing class and comfort, more than image or rock-hard suspension.
Popular particularly among the older enthusiasts, the 75 has not seen a major decline in customers since first releasing in 1999.
It is a car that is greatly designed for the pothole-riddled roads of Britain, known for its toughness and rarity.
The model has therefore not seen much of a change to its value, holding their price as many other classics are dropping.
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005)
Value today: £550 (1.6 Base) to £7000 (1.8 Elegance, concours)
Sales of this smaller MPV skyrocketed after being put on the market.
As a seven-seater hatchback, it was a clever car with fine driving characteristics, and based on the Astra G platform.
Today, they are rare to find in good condition.

Available in both coupe and convertible body styles, the seventh generation Mustang is still selling well. In this instalment of John Murdoch's Drive Time, John gets behind the wheel of the legend that is the Ford Mustang and discovers how the end has arrived for the famous Honda Civic Type R. The latest version of the legendary Ford Mustang muscle car comes with a redesigned digital interior and a revamped V8 engine to supply even more firepower. ‌ Available in both coupe and convertible body styles, the seventh generation Mustang is still selling well. ‌ Since the original Mustang first arrived six decades ago more than 10 million have been sold worldwide. With edgier styling, the latest model sits on the same platform as its predecessor but comes with upgraded hardware, software and tuning - plus a new Gen IV 5.0-litre V8 engine said to provide even greater response and performance. Not to be confused with its sibling, the all-electric Mustang Mach-E, this model looks like a real muscle car and has the power to match with a mighty 5.0-litre V8 engine growling under the huge bonnet. With prices ranging from £58,470 to £63,970, the 2025 Mustang is sold in Fastback or Convertible form and customers can select from either a six-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic unit. I have been sampling the GT Fastback with the automatic gearbox and enjoyed its huge performance. ‌ Now with an even more aggressive look the GT Fastback has a sculpted bonnet, black grille housing the galloping horse emblem, signature triple-LED headlamps and tail lights, 19-inch carbonised grey alloys with red brake calipers and was finished in Atlas Blue paint as an £800 extra. The cabin is deceptively spacious up front with ample room for a couple of tall adults and it has black leather sports seats which are powered, heated and ventilated. The flat-bottomed steering wheel can also be heated. Twin screens that merge behind a single glass pane dominate with a 12.4-inch digital driver display along with a 13.2-inch infotainment screen that offers access to all the on-board technology. ‌ As you would expect, the Mustang features Ford's latest and most intuitive SYNC 4 software with over-the-air updates. You also get an excellent 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, sat nav, a rearview camera, along with climate control settings. The GT Fastback has a wonderful soundtrack to match its stunning performance. The 5.0-litre V8 engine delivers 446PS and 540Nm of torque. ‌ That's enough to rocket from 0 to 62mph in just 4.9 seconds and has a top speed that's limited to 155mph. Don't expect economy as the best you will achieve is 28mpg on a long run if you take it easy and an average of 23mpg. ‌ If you really push things, consumption will plunge to as little as 13mpg. The 10-speed automatic box is smooth and perfect for the job but you can also operate it manually if you wish. The engine roars into life as soon as you press the start button and the V8 soundtrack is superb through the quad tailpipes. ‌ Acceleration is rapid and the GT has loads of grip and is at home on both motorways and country roads. Multiple drive modes enable you to alter the performance and enjoy the soundtrack. You can even tone the noise level down if you don't want to upset the neighbours late at night or early morning. ‌ Room up front is great but the rear seats are only suitable for youngsters. The boot is ample and provides 381 litres of space - enough for the shop or a couple of sets of golf clubs. A wireless charging pad is a bonus and there is also lots of storage space in the cabin. ‌ The Mustang makes driving fun and this Ford icon may not be subtle but it makes you feel great when you get behind the wheel. It may not be too long before we are not able to drive cars like this, so let's enjoy it while we still can. FAST FACTS: ‌ Price: £60,470. Mechanical: 5-litre, V8, 446ps, petrol hybrid engine driving two wheels via automatic gearbox. Max speed: 155mph. ‌ 0-62mph: 4.9 seconds. Combined mpg: 23.3. Insurance group: 41. ‌ CO2 emissions: 277g/km. Bik rating: 37 per cent. Warranty: Three years/60,000 miles. ‌ Overall rating (out of 5): 4.5. In further motoring news, Honda is saying goodbye to its iconic Civic Type R with a new Ultimate Edition that signals the end of sales for the model in Europe - with only 40 units available across the region, alongside the remaining standard models. Designed to embody 28-years of hot hatch performance, this special model comes in trademark Championship White with bespoke red decals across both the bonnet and down the side of the vehicle that match its iconic badge. ‌ There is also a painted black roof, plus carbon details throughout, including a wing spoiler and doorstep garnish. Inside, the carbon theme continues with a centre console panel, while additional lighting calls out select interior features, including the door lining, cup holder, centre console, footwell and under seat illumination. ‌ On opening the front doors, there is also a Type R logo projector that enhances the unique appeal. As a special token, owners will receive a unique matching gift box containing a numbered emblem - from one to 40 - and a carbon key ring, alongside custom-made floor mats, and a car cover. Hannah Swift, head of European strategy and product at Honda Motor Europe, said: "As we say farewell to a true icon of the Honda automobile line-up in Europe, we thought it was fitting to give the Civic Type R the ultimate send-off with this special edition model offering our customers a unique opportunity to celebrate its legacy. ‌ "The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation. "However, Type R has always been Honda's ultimate expression of our passion for driving excitement, and we look forward to celebrating its heritage in the weeks and months ahead." The Civic Type R first came to prominence in Japan with the sixth generation of the Civic hatchback model in 1997. ‌ Since then, it has spanned a further five generations and many special editions besides, building a dedicated fan base around the world with its long tradition of high-performance inspired by the spirit of racing. Further demonstrating its dynamic credentials across almost three decades, the Civic Type R has set front wheel drive production benchmarks at several circuits around the world - most notably the Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany on several occasions. This on-track success also extended to the World Touring Car Championship and World Touring Car Cup, in addition to other regional series, where the Civic Type R has been a popular choice and delivered both drivers' and team titles. Ford Bronco Facing Airbag Recall The 2025 Ford Bronco has just been recalled, and unfortunately, it's for a physical fault that could reduce safety. According to recall documents filed with the NHTSA, 'the active vent flap on the passenger side may prevent the airbag from deploying as intended.' This recall covers 2,272 Broncos, and while it's not good news, owners can at least take comfort in the knowledge that this isn't nearly as serious as the Takata airbag fault that continues to plague numerous unrecalled vehicles from manufacturers around the world, and this air bag is made by a completely different company. 0:07 / 0:09 Audi A5 replaces A4: So, what's changed? Watch More The Airbag May Not Cushion Impacts Properly Source: Ford The NHTSA says that if the active vent flap of the passenger airbag doesn't open during a crash, 'the internal cushion pressure will not decrease as rapidly as designed, resulting in a higher-pressure cushion interacting with an occupant.' In other words, the component meant to safely prevent an occupant's head from hitting the dashboard could well injure them instead. The problem was discovered during routine testing by Michigan-based airbag supplier Joyson Safety Systems, which flagged the issue with Ford. Problems with testing led the supplier to a plastic flange holding the micro gas generator responsible for inflating the airbag in place. This flange may break when the airbag is activated, and this may interfere with the active vent flap. Over A Quarter Of Broncos Are Affected Source: Ford Of the 2,272 Broncos impacted by this recall, only 28% are expected to have the fault. Ford will begin sending interim notification letters on June 28. A second will be sent when the remedy is ready to be installed, but Ford has not provided an estimated timeline for when this will happen. Once the new parts are available, dealers will replace the airbag module at no cost to owners. As we've noted before, Ford has been working hard to overcome quality control issues, and there's still plenty to improve on, but at least this time, it doesn't appear to be something that Ford missed under its own roof.
