
Slick Rick returns after 26 years with 'Victory' album and proves hip-hop storytelling still reigns
LOS ANGELES — Hip-hop legend Slick Rick is proving his creative spark is far from fading.
The English-born rapper — known for his signature eye patch and masterful storytelling — returned to the booth with his first new project in nearly three decades. He's reminding the world of his timeless rap prowess on his visual album, 'Victory,' released Friday.
It marks Slick Rick's first album since 1999's 'The Art of Storytelling.' This new project is largely self-produced, with the rapper handling 95% of the production and sharing executive producer duties with Emmy-nominated actor and occasional rapper-DJ Idris Elba, who appears on the album alongside Nas, Giggs and Estelle.
'You was a young adult, then a middled aged man and now you're an older man, so my mentality has to grow with it,' said Slick Rick, known for his rap classics such as 'Children's Story,' 'La Di Da Di' with Doug E. Fresh and 'Mona Lisa.' His debut album, 'The Great Adventures of Slick Rick,' in 1988 hit No. 1 on the Billboard R&B/hip-hop charts.
'Victory' was four years in the making, with Slick Rick, now 60, writing and recording the album between his birthplace of London then France, while the visuals were filmed in the United States, United Kingdom and Africa.
Slick Rick believes his voice still resonates in hip-hop. He said the subjects he tackles have grown with him.
'Can't always be children all the time,' he said. 'We grow and talk about things that interest us at this age.'
In a recent interview, Slick Rick spoke with The Associated Press about how storytelling plays a role in today's rap, his relationship with Elba and how hip-hop has no limitations.

SLICK RICK: We met at a party and then we clicked. His people reached out to me, and they wanted to make an album. They flew me to England and France. I hung out with Idris at his cribs, and we just did what we do. We just had fun, And then when we was finished, we said, 'Yeah, we're ready to bring it to the marketplace.'
SLICK RICK: It might've been a little hesitation, but you're just having fun. We just bringing it to the marketplace and see what happens. There's no pressure or nothing. We're bringing it to the people to see if they like it. Feed them.
SLICK RICK: When we were in the studio with Idris doing our thing, I checked the reactions of people. But then I saw people in their happy place. Once I saw that, I'm good. I see him and his people's happy. A little dancing. Popped a little Moet. We were having a good time.
SLICK RICK: It's what Black people like. We're not just hip-hop. We like reggae. We like house music. Let's say like the Beatles or Barry Manilow. We go all over the place. Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross. We go places. We try to entertain ourselves in different areas of existence.
SLICK RICK: It was saving time. People make songs and do videos anyway. So why not just speed this up real quick? Video and rap both at the same time. Boom, let's keep it moving. ... This is like watching a movie. You want to expand the picture. Not only do you hear my voice and the music, which is the essence. You get ... visual picture as well.
SLICK RICK: In my creative process, I need to have a lot of input or it's not going to be authentic Rick. Too many hands, it's not going to pop. So many hands is going to distort stuff. I do my own music most of the time.
SLICK RICK: It's an open space. It hasn't been filled, the whole storytelling thing. Before it gets too lost back into braggadocios, one frequency. Expand your horizons. You don't always have to be rough. Be romantic. Be humorous. Be vulnerable. Go all over. Be a politician. Use your imagination. Go places, so we can take stories and give to our people's imagination.

Best of the Week: Languages evolve, but politics may not
It's been more than six months since I've written an edition of Best of the Week, so forgive me for taking you back to a barbershop—my go-to place for ideas. Though I am sure folks cutting hair and trimming beards would prefer that I use the term salon. On my last visit a month ago, I asked for a new haircut: one with volume at the top and back, but a little fade on the sides. This hairstyle has recently become popular in India, so I thought I'd give it a try. The man didn't really understand my description. So, I showed him a picture. 'Arey sir, bullet bolo na seedha. Bohot chalta hai aaj kal,' he quipped. (You should have just asked for the bullet haircut. It's quite popular these days.) I was thoroughly intrigued by this name. In the middle of the haircut, I kind of figured out how this name must have caught on. Perhaps some of you are familiar with the 'mullet' haircut, which first became popular in the 1970s and 80s. But since the modern age can't admit that what's old is back in (see bell-bottoms), we now call it a 'modern mullet'. Of course, that term would have been fine at a barbershop. At a salon, such terms are useless. But at some point, someone called it a mullet; a barber heard it as 'bullet', and that's how we got here. Languages are always evolving and endlessly fascinating. As a kid, my mother used to worry that my English would be ruined due to the lack of vowels in text messages. She would implore me to read newspapers. This anecdote is perhaps funnier in the current political climate, when some have chosen to ridicule those who converse in English. Today, we use emojis and hashtags in headlines. Perhaps tomorrow, what's old will yet again be new, and we shall all go back to typin lyk dis. On to Mint's best works from the week gone by: 📉 As we still recover from the tragic crash in Ahmedabad, a lot of questions remain unanswered. While the authorities will take their time, the stock market waits for nobody. Review: Rama Bhima Soma by Srikar Raghavan
Srikar Raghavan's Rama Bhima Soma; Cultural Investigations into Modern Karnataka requires the reader to have vast reserves of reading stamina, an empathetic world view and a willingness to travel deep into different geographies, perspectives, communities, stories and movements, even those whose politics the author may not agree with. A Yakshagana performer; just one of the many facets of Karnataka (Shutterstock) A self-professed 'inveterate bookworm,' 'more of a reader than a writer' and 'a Kannada-nut', Raghavan speaks to the English reader who may or may not be Kannada literate as well as to the Kannada reader who has felicity with the English language. How this book unites two universes that have their own complicated history of separation is its strength and success. 598pp, ₹899; HarperCollins Neither its extensive research nor its collation is as impressive as the fact that the author did not learn to read and write Kannada in school. He learnt it as a post-graduate student, using a Kannada-Kannada-English dictionary. In the prologue he writes that the first Kannada novel he read was Shivaram Karanth's Chomana Dudi. And from there began his journey towards Kannada literature, Karnataka's history, culture, politics, socio-economic realities and drama. Raghavan dives headlong into all of these, following every lead and thread, sometimes interviewing sources on their death bed (though neither he nor the source knew that). As the cover suggests, the title references a game played by school boys. 'It requires only a ball, no fixed number of players, no teams, no designated boundary and no premeditation,' he writes. It is a game with no end, though the beginning is very clearly indicated by the pitching of the ball into the air three times (that's counted as Rama Bhima Soma!) After the ball is thrown in the air, the nearest person grabs it and aims it at some other player – it could be anyone nearby or farther afield. Whoever grabs the ball after the hit, then repeats the cycle. This goes on till 'collective exhaustion sets in, or the bell rings...' This game is the book's underlying metaphor. Will every player get a chance to hold the ball, aim and strike? Will the ones getting hit often (for whatever reason) manage to dodge the ball and also get to wield it? And more importantly, will everyone get to play on the same field [of Karnataka] together? The author follows his curiosity to delve into relationships between various socio-political movements, events, books, people, communities, performers, writers, artists and others who shaped or were shaped by the state's morphing landscapes, in any order that draws him. This volume, therefore, is not the history but 'a history, a personal micro-history' of Karnataka, writes Raghavan. He makes no bones about where he stands with respect to the politics of the state and the country, yet, goes to great lengths to probe the thought processes of those who hold the exact opposite positions. This adds to the book's texture. If you are a feminist reader, however, you might despair at the scale of masculine energy in the politics and sociology represented here. You will, however, encounter bright places like the interview with Du Saraswathi or the story of doctor-turned-activist Kusuma Sorab, known as Kusumakka to the girls she worked with. The chapter entitled On Conversions, Controversies and Communalism stands out in how it juxtaposes the syncretic history of the Baba Budana Giri shrine in North Karnataka with an account of the rise of right-wing ideology in the region (and state). It describes the fluid times when 'the Veerashaiva and Sufi orders in North Karnataka interacted and fused with a rare syncretic spirit,' even as Ibrahim Adil Shah II ruled Bijapur and Akbar ruled the north. Scholar Rahamath Tarikere is quoted: 'The gurupanthas (local guru-shishya traditions that stand outside organised religious orders) recognised that caste, untouchability, gender inequality and social concerns were the key hindrances to spiritual achievement,' as were religious differences between Hindus and Muslims. It is ironic that fundamentalism looms against this backdrop. Srikar Raghavan (Courtesy A Suitable Agency) Intensive interviews feature throughout but the ones in the chapter entitled Forests, Conservation and the Ecology of Change' that track environmental movements and protests are especially good. The story of how Indian Forest Officer SG Neginhal 'planted and raised one and half million trees,' told by veteran environmental activist, SR Hiremath, co-founder of the Samaja Parivartan Samudaya (SPS) is one among many others. The formation (and fragmentation) of the Dalit movement, trade unions, workers' movements; the arguments and friendships between socialists, Marxists and communists; the travails and triumphs of artistes across forms and genders; the average do-gooders working on the fringes of society but holding its fabric in place with their idealism and hope – all this and more are presented in great detail. If you are interested in how people make history and enjoy examining layers of belief, thought and action; if you like stories about how politics and religion are being cast aside by some citizens who nevertheless are making a positive impact on their world; if you like random facts (Did you know there is a variety of rice named after the former Prime Minister, HD Deve Gowda, in Punjab?) and want to grasp the stories behind the storytellers; if you have an appetite for tales that take you on trails, and if you have strong wrists – it's a heavy book! – you will be happy to read Rama Bhima Soma. Meet Shubh, the second Punjabi artiste after Diljit Dosanjh to grace Billboard Canada and sell out North American arenas
Shubh, the India-born, Brampton-based Punjabi singer, has made history by becoming the second Indian and second Punjabi artiste to appear solo on the cover of Billboard Canada. The only other Indian artist to receive this honour is global icon Diljit Dosanjh. This milestone marks a turning point not just for Shubh, but for Punjabi music worldwide. It signals a growing global appreciation for regional Indian sounds, with Shubh at the forefront of this movement. Coinciding with his Billboard feature, Shubh is set to begin his debut North American tour this August. The tour will begin at Oakland Arena on August 22, followed by Vancouver's Rogers Arena on August 23, and a major show at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena on September 5 - a stage once graced by legends like Eminem. The tour wraps up at the Prudential Center in New Jersey on September 7. 'I never expected this,' Shubh says about the arena tour. 'But I'm very happy that we're performing in arenas.' He also recalls his first concert in 2023 at Indigo at the O2 in London. 'My voice was shaking,' he admits. 'I was very hyped up, but it also humbled me down.' Earlier this year, Shubh released 'Sicario', a 10-track album that debuted at No. 24 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart. The album, with over 250 million streams, blends Punjabi lyrics with modern hip-hop. Tracks like 'Buckle Up' and 'Aura' highlight his versatility. Following Sicario, his single Supreme became a viral hit. It debuted on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, hit No. 1 on Apple Music India and Canada, and continues to stream over 1 million times a day on Spotify. Shubh's rise shows that Punjabi music is not only thriving but going global.
