Justin Thomas' true Jordan Spieth thoughts with relationship crystal clear
Golf stars Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth have a strong friendship, but it seems the duo aren't afraid to put their alliance to one side when it comes to battling for the game's biggest titles
Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas have one of golf's strongest friendships, dating back to their teenage years on the junior circuit.
Spieth, 31, and Thomas, 32, teed off in the US Open on Thursday at the challenging Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Both players will be eager to end a dry spell in the majors by conquering Oakmont's formidable course during the prestigious tournament.
Speaking on Netflix 's latest golf documentary, Full Swing, Thomas displayed his fierce side, however, by admitting that he is happy to put his 20-year-long friendship with Spieth on the back burner in order to achieve his goals.
'He's one of my best friends, we're always going to pull for each other," Thomas said on the first episode of the show. "But at the same time, I hope that I beat him in every single tournament that we play in for the rest of our life.'
Spieth boasts an illustrious career with three major titles under his belt, but has not secured one of the game's premium events since his triumph at The Open in 2017. Thomas, on the other hand, has two majors to his name, winning the PGA Championship in 2017 and 2022.
While they will be going head-to-head at Oakmont, it appears Thomas has always enjoyed a competitive streak with his closest friend. Speaking in 2017, he opened up on how they've always gone toe-to-toe, regardless of the tournament.
"I mean, we're always competing," he said. "Whether it was we want to be at the top of the Rolex Rankings in junior golf; we want to be the low junior golfer in the US.
"Amateur; we want to make the cut as an amateur in a Tour event; we want to win college player of the year and we want to lead our team's scoring average. It's just now we're at the top level."
The duo, who grew especially close after playing all over the world as teenagers, have been spotted on vacation in the Bahamas together, while Spieth was also Thomas' best man when he married Jillian Wisniewski. Despite their highly competitive nature, there is a more tender side to their bromance.
In January 2024, Thomas lifted the lid to GOLF's Subpar podcast on his best friend's contribution to his wedding. 'I hate to do this, but man, he crushed it,' Thomas said on Spieth's best man speech.
'I'll give him an A+. He didn't lose the rings, which, if you know Jordan, that's always on the table. He had a great speech. Didn't throw me under the bus but also had a few subtle jabs in there."
Spieth and Thomas also bought shares in the 49ers group, which own Leeds United. Yet, alliances will once again be tested as the pair battle it out for the US Open.
With Oakmont's damp conditions worrying some of the finest names in the game – from Bryson DeChambeau to Rory McIlroy – Spieth, who is still battling back after wrist surgery, has revealed that he is ready for whatever Oakmont throws his way.
'This course is built to be like this,' he told the Associated Press recently. 'So they're not doing a whole lot different to the golf course. You hit a good shot, you get rewarded for it here. And if you don't, you're in big trouble. It's pure golf, no funny business about it.'

Volkswagen GTI Edition 50 Revealed With Golf R-Rivaling Horsepower
Introducing the new king of FWD hatchbacks A few days after confirming that it's the quickest production Volkswagen around the Nurburgring, the brand has officially taken the covers off the Golf GTI Edition 50. It arrives at the perfect time for the iconic Golf nameplate, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year. With this reveal, we have more insight into how VW managed to get a front-wheel-drive GTI around the famous Green Hell more quickly than the all-wheel-drive Golf R, which is quite an achievement. Thanks to a Performance Package and even more power than we were expecting, this hottest Golf GTI achieved a Nurburgring lap time of seven minutes and 46.13 seconds. Nearly As Powerful As Golf R The final specs are in, and this is clearly no ordinary GTI. Whereas the standard GTI produces 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque (making it slightly less powerful than the European GTI), the GTI Edition 50 gets achingly close to the Golf R with outputs of 321 hp and 310 lb-ft. That's only 7 hp less than the R, and torque is exactly the same. This GTI is also more powerful than the Civic Type R (315 hp), often considered the king of FWD hot hatchbacks. Riding on a special Performance chassis, VW used half a century of experience in developing the GTI to perfect this model. The Golf VIII GTI Clubsport was used as a starting point, before the team added semi-slick tires and more precise steering. The front differential lock was also tuned for this application. Source: Volkswagen Go for the GTI Performance package, and the car gets higher spring rates, a further lowering of the ride height, special suspension mounts, lighter forged wheels, a weight-saving Akrapovic titanium exhaust system, and 235 Potenza Race semi-slick tires from Bridgestone. The cumulative effect of these changes left racing driver Benjamin Leuchter deeply impressed. 'For me, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 is the most precise and sporty Volkswagen I've ever driven,' says Leuchter. 'It reminds me a lot of the Golf GTI Clubsport S from 2016. However, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 has been systematically enhanced once again. Because it's so intuitive and precise, I have a lot of confidence in the car and can really push it to the limit.' Sporty Looks Match Record Pace Outside, the GTI Edition 50 gets a choice of five exterior colors: Pure White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black, Tornado Red, and Dark Moss Green. The red is especially closely tied to various VW performance cars from the past, including the Golf VR6 Mk3. GTI 50 logos, a black roof and mirrors, and a distinctive side stripe combine to visually differentiate this special Golf. Inside, the nostalgic check pattern has been applied to the supportive seats, which has red detailing. The GTI 50 logo can be found on the steering wheel, which also houses paddles for the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. 'The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is our fastest and most powerful GTI to date. With the optional Performance package, we have taken the GTI concept to a whole new level,' explains Sebastian Willmann, Head of the Chassis Development and Driving Dynamics Department at VW. There's no word yet on pricing or availability, but we expect a figure far above the $32,445 starting price of the normal GTI. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

The Waterfront: Is The New Drama From The Creator Of Dawson's Creek Worth Watching? Read What Critics Say
One of Netflix's newest arrivals is The Waterfront , already dubbed 'Dawson's Creek for adults', which sounds like perfect weekend viewing to us. It's even created by the same person: Kevin Williamson. Starring Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist, Danielle Campbell, Mario Bello and Holt McCallany, this drama is bound to introduce you to some new faces too. But is the new show worth watching? Is it genuinely gripping or just a good comfort watch? Read below to find out. Set in the fictional seaside town, Havenport, North Carolina, this eight-part Netflix series follows the prominent yet dysfunctional family, the Buckleys, as they try to keep their decaying fishing empire afloat by entering the dangerous world of the drug trade. It doesn't sound too far off last summer's hit show, The Perfect Couple, or any of the Harlan Coben series, so if you liked any of those then this one might be worth a try. Yes, you can watch the official trailer for the series below. Nick Hilton at The Independent gave the series three stars, describing it as 'predictable to a fault' but 'hard not to keep watching'. The Guardian 's Lucy Mangan agrees, giving The Waterfront three stars too. 'Twists come thick and fast, there's tons of plot and action is set in a water-based community,' she writes. 'The creator of the '90s megahit's new show is an opportunity to wallow in nostalgia – albeit with added drug running.' It is described as 'highly bingeable' by Variety too. Aramide Tinubu explains the series is inspired by Williamson's father, who was a fisherman and began smuggling drugs in the 1980s to make ends meet. ' The Waterfront is a highly entertaining series about four people willing to do anything to hold on to their legacy, even if it means turning on each other in the process,' reads the review. The New York Times ' Margaret Lyons praised the show for bringing 'more murder to Netflix'. 'The show is one of many to follow the Yellowstone model, a family saga of violence and secrets, of huffy men and sly women, of distinctive names. It is also about land that's been in this family for generations, gosh darn it – land that's our legacy if only the cruelties of debt and developers would abate,' she writes. It might only have a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience rating of 3.9, but the reviews are largely positive. This is a watchable, familiar show with all the twists and turns audiences are looking for. If you have a day to yourself to lie on the sofa away from the heat, you know what to do.
