I consider myself a pretty tech-savvy person. So I'm not sure why it took me until Black Friday 2024 to try out a smart plug but, I'm ever since then, my life has been totally transformed thanks to the Kasa Smart Plug. Here's why I highly suggest shopping Kasa deals during today's Amazon Big Spring Sale.
I first used one of the single Kasa Smart Plugs while hanging up Christmas lights back in November and I had it set up in about three minutes. I quickly installed the app, added the device, plugged in my lights and started flipping them on and off like a crazy person. (United Launch Alliance via YouTube) A second batch of satellites has been sent into low Earth orbit for Amazon's Project Kuiper broadband network, marking another significant step toward competing with SpaceX's global Starlink network. United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rocket launched 27 Project Kuiper satellites today at 6:54 a.m. ET (3:54 a.m. PT) from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. They joined 27 other satellites that were launched on an Atlas V in April. Eventually, Amazon aims to deploy 3,232 satellites to provide global high-speed internet access to millions of people who are currently underserved. Under the terms of Amazon's license from the Federal Communications Commission, half of those satellites should be deployed by mid-2026 — although that deadline may need to be extended. This batch of satellites was originally scheduled for deployment a week ago, but ULA said it had to scrub the first launch attempt 'due to an engineering observation of an elevated purge temperature within the booster engine.' No major technical issues cropped up during today's countdown. The current schedule calls for Project Kuiper to begin delivering service to customers later this year. To meet Amazon's timeline, dozens of launch slots have been reserved on ULA's Atlas V and Vulcan rockets, as well as Blue Origin's New Glenn rockets, Arianespace's Ariane 6 rockets and even SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets. Amazon's primary satellite manufacturing facility is in Kirkland, Wash., with some of the components produced at Project Kuiper's headquarters in nearby Redmond. After today's batch of satellites is deployed, Project Kuiper's mission operations team in Redmond will take command and get the spacecraft ready for service. It'll be challenging for Amazon to catch up with SpaceX, which has more than 7,800 Starlink satellites in orbit, serving 6 million subscribers around the globe. The latest batch of Starlink satellites went into orbit just hours before the Project Kuiper launch. Like Project Kuiper's satellites, Starlink's satellites are built in the Seattle area. There are other competitors as well, including OneWeb, Hughesnet and Viasat. Amazon is expected to leverage Project Kuiper to give a broadband boost to its other lines of business, starting with Amazon Web Services' cloud computing operation. It's also conceivable that Project Kuiper could smooth the way for online commerce and Amazon Prime streaming services in places that are lagging behind when it comes to internet access. The pricing model for Project Kuiper connectivity hasn't yet been announced, but Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has said that satellite connectivity will be a 'very large revenue opportunity for Amazon.' It's also a very large investment: Five years ago, Amazon said it intended to invest more than $10 billion in Project Kuiper, and some analysts say the effort may end up costing as much as $20 billion.

By Arriana McLymore NEW YORK (Reuters) -Amazon's defense against tariffs for its coming Prime Day? Luxury goods. President Donald Trump's tariffs have spurred some Amazon sellers who source products from China and other heavily tariffed countries to bow out of the company's Prime Day, one of its biggest sales events of the year, to protect their margins. Amazon Prime Day is now a four-day shopping event exclusively for Amazon Prime members, taking place this year from July 8 to July 11. The Seattle-based e-commerce company is hoping that recent sales growth in high-margin cosmetics in its Amazon Premium Beauty category will cushion the impact of tariffs on Prime Day sales revenue and consumer sentiment. "Beauty has become, in the past few years, more of an essential item in consumers' minds," even in hard financial times, said Anna Mayo, vice president of NielsenIQ's Beauty Vertical unit. Amazon Premium Beauty was initially shunned by luxury cosmetic players who feared the platform would harm their image when it was launched in 2013. But those days are gone. Now, the online retailer is promoting products from top beauty and haircare brands including Estee Lauder's Clinique, Olaplex and L'Oreal's Urban Decay. During last year's Prime Day event, U.S. shoppers spent $14.2 billion, up 11% year-over-year, according to Adobe Analytics. Top cosmetics brands can charge high prices and often do not offer steep discounts on Prime Day compared with electronics, apparel and home goods. This year, Adobe Analytics expects beauty product discounts to have "milder" discounts of 10% to 17%, whereas electronics deals are expected to range from 14% to 22% off, said Vivek Pandya, lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights. That, coupled with the ease of shipping small packages of most products, means that Amazon Premium Beauty merchandise has higher margins than other products sold on Prime Day. Amazon 'doesn't make a huge margin in most of the categories of stuff that it sells online,' said Renee Parker, co-founder of consultancy firm Invinci and a former Amazon executive. "They are making a lot of money on premium beauty products because ... (they're) small and expensive, and you can ship a ton of them.' Vitamins and supplements are successful for similar reasons. Amazon Premium Beauty sales gathered steam after the e-commerce giant began clamping down on counterfeits and top beauty companies needed new ways to reach customers, said Alfonso Emanuele de Leon, a beauty industry veteran and partner at FA Hong Kong Consultancy. Amazon was previously viewed as a pariah by luxury beauty brands because of the cheap merchandise on the website, but is no longer perceived that way, said Emanuele de Leon. 'HUGE ACCELERATION' Sales at Amazon Premium Beauty rose by nearly 20% to $15 billion between April 2024 and April 2025, outpacing the 14% growth for beauty products outside the specialized e-commerce store, according to NielsenIQ. It also outpaced the year-over-year growth of 5% for online store sales in the first quarter, NielsenIQ said. L'Oreal Chief Executive Nicolas Hieronimus said during the company's annual meeting in April that having products on Amazon led to a "huge acceleration" in expanding its U.S. market share. Estee Lauder has launched 11 brands on Amazon's U.S. site since March 2024. More than 75% of Estee's finished goods sold in the U.S. originate from the U.S. or Canada and are therefore protected by existing trade agreements, Roberto Canevari, Estee Lauder's global supply chain executive vice president, said at a conference in June. Lauren Gordon, vice president of Amazon at Estee Lauder, said that Prime Day and Amazon's other "high-traffic shopping moments" give the company a chance to "attract both new and existing customers." Melis del Rey, general manager for health and beauty for Amazon U.S. stores, said her team has been "very proactive" in working with premium brands to determine tariff impacts. "At a high level, most of the premium brands' sourcing strategies are local, and therefore, the (tariff) impact is less imminent," del Rey said. Amazon Premium Beauty is an invite-only program for brands shipped and sold by Amazon and third-party sellers. The department has grown to more than 10,000 products, and brands' eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis. Brands like Dyson and Estee Lauder's Aveda pay an extra 15% commission to Amazon for every website sale, and the third-party seller approach allows major brands to control pricing and inventory. Adding prestige brands including Unilever's Dermalogica has helped the company compete with beauty retailers Ulta Beauty and Sephora, which is owned by LVMH, and also attract older, higher-income shoppers at a time when TikTok Shop is scooping up younger customers. The UK grocery regulator has launched an investigation into Amazon for alleged breaches of rules governing payments to suppliers. The Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA) said it has 'reasonable grounds' to suspect Amazon has breached the UK's Groceries Supply Code of Practice (GSCOP), which requires no delays in supplier payments. The investigation will examine Amazon's practices from March 2022 to June 2025, based on evidence received from 'a range of sources', the GCA said. The watchdog said it would look into Amazon's processes for receiving goods and making payments, handling supplier concerns about payment deductions and the use of deduction settlements in negotiations with suppliers. "The alleged delays could expose Amazon suppliers to excessive risk and unexpected costs, potentially affecting their ability to invest and innovate," GCA adjudicator Mark White said in a statement. An Amazon spokesperson told Just Food on Friday (20 June) the retail giant takes the GSCOP 'incredibly seriously' and will 'cooperate fully with the adjudicator'. 'We have already made significant improvements to our grocery supplier experience, including to payment practices, with supplier contacts on this reducing year-on-year," the spokesperson added. Amazon has made changes including giving suppliers 30 days to challenge shortages and chargebacks before any money is deducted. The retailer also pointed to its introduction of "minimum notification periods" before any products are de-listed. The GCA's investigation follows a directive from the watchdog nearly a year ago when it urged Amazon to take 'swift and comprehensive action' to comply with UK rules protecting suppliers. According to the watchdog's 2024 annual survey, fewer than half of respondents directly supplying Amazon believed the retailer 'consistently' or 'mostly' adhered to the code.
