Iran Fires Cluster Bombs At Israel, Rain Down Submunitions On Civilians; First During This War
Iran has intensified its confrontation with Israel by launching a missile armed with a cluster munitions warhead — the first known use of the controversial weapon in the current war. The warhead broke apart midair, scattering deadly submunitions across central Israel, with one hitting a home in Azor. Though there were no casualties, the Israeli military condemned the attack as a deliberate act targeting civilians. Cluster bombs are widely criticized for their long-term danger due to unexploded ordnance. Israel and Iran are among the few countries not part of the international ban on these weapons. The incident marks a dangerous escalation in tactics with global implications.#clusterbombs #IranMissileStrike #IsraelUnderAttack #MiddleEastTensions #IranVsIsrael #BallisticMissiles #BreakingNews #sorokahospital #MissileAttack #DaylightStrike #IDF

Israel-Iran conflict: Day after Israeli attack, nuclear watchdog confirms damages to key under-construction reactor near Tehran

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IEAE) has confirmed that Israel's strikes on Friday resulted in damages to key buildings at the partially constructed Khondab (formerly known as Arak) Heavy Water Production Plant including its distillation unit. The nuclear watchdog's statement comes a day after the global body said no damages were 'initially visible'. 'While damage to the nearby Heavy Water Production Plant was initially not visible, it is now assessed that key buildings at the facility were damaged, including the distillation unit,' the IEAE's latest statement on 'Updates on developments in Iran' said. No damage has been observed at Iran's other nuclear sites so far, it added. No radiological consequence was expected, IEAE's Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said. This has been attributed to the reactor not being operational and not containing any nuclear material. 'There is a lot of nuclear material in Iran in different places, which means that the potential for a radiological accident with the dispersion in the atmosphere of radioactive materials and particles does exist,' he added, stressing on the possible nuclear safety risks. IAEA, in its statement, also sought to receive timely and regular technical information about the nuclear facilities and their respective sites in the country. 'This information is needed to promptly inform the international community and ensure an effective response and assistance to any emergency situation in Iran,' Director General Grossi said. He added that the agency was also in constant contact with other countries in the region amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The Khondab reactor was hit on Thursday (June 19) as the both Israel and Iran continued to trade strikes on the seventh day of the conflict. The Israeli strikea also damaged the nearby plant that makes heavy water. Heavy-water reactors can be used to produce plutonium which, like enriched uranium, can be used to make an atom bomb. So far, Israel has announced that its attacks have hit prominent Iranian nuclear sites in Natanz, Isfahan, Arak and Tehran itself. With AP inputs

Arak nuclear facility hit: Satellite images show extent of Israeli strike; see before-and-after pic

Iran's Arak nuclear facility The Israeli military conducted a strike on Iran's Arak heavy water reactor facility on Thursday morning, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The facility, located 280 kilometers from Tehran, had been inactive under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal. The Arak Nuclear Complex's significance Built in response to Iran's security concerns following the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, the Arak facility was developed domestically after Iran failed to acquire heavy water reactor technology from other nations. The complex consisted of an experimental reactor and heavy water production facilities, with the latter being crucial for producing plutonium that could potentially be used in nuclear weapons. The strike and its impact Israeli Defence Forces targeted the facility "to prevent the reactor from being restored," specifically aiming at the reactor's core seal. Satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies revealed significant damage, including the partial collapse of the reactor dome and damage to surrounding structures. The Israeli military released footage showing multiple explosions at the site. Iranian atomic energy chief Mohammed Eslami condemned the attack as "barbaric and unlawful" and called for IAEA intervention. The IAEA confirmed no radiological release resulted from the strike. The attack came in response to Iranian missile strikes on southern Israel, which had damaged medical facilities and residential areas near Tel Aviv.
