Indo-Canadian groups hold candlelight vigils, prayer meetings for the victims of Pahalgam terror attack

Hindustan Times27-04-2025

Toronto: As the Indo-Canadian community remains in shock over the terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, they held vigils and prayers meetings in memory of the victims in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Vancouver, Montreal and elsewhere across the country.
On Saturday morning, over 300 people, including local politicians, gathered at the Gita Park in the Brampton in the GTA for a 'solemn vigil to honour the victims' of the terror attack.
'The gathering served as a powerful reminder of unity, compassion, and the collective determination to uphold peace. Together, attendees prayed, reflected, and reaffirmed their commitment to a future built on harmony and resilience,' the Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce (CHCC), which held the event, said.
Its president Kushagr Dutt Sharma said, 'Today, we stood together not just to mourn, but to renew our commitment to a world where hatred has no home. The pain of the Pahalgam attacks reminds us that unity and compassion are our strongest weapons against violence.'
On Saturday evening, a similar number of mourners gathered for a candlelight vigil at Mel Lastman Square in Toronto.
Ruchi Wali, one of the principal organisers of the vigil, told the gathering that among its objectives was to send out the message that 'Hindu lives matter'.
Wali, who has roots in Jammu and Kashmir, called out the 'silence' of the Canadian establishment in criticising the perpetrators of the violence.
Rishabh Sarswat, president of the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) Canada, said that 'Hindu trauma is not recognised in Western countries' and that was 'reflected in the media and in the language of politicians'.
As speakers questioned why Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was the last among leaders of G7 countries to condemn the terror attack, Sarswat said such a delayed response spoke 'volumes' over the 'seriousness' of the country's political class over the rights of Hindu. 'That is very concerning for us as Hindu Canadians,' he said.
Joining the Indo-Canadian groups were Jewish organisations, and Baloch human rights activists, among others.
Meanwhile, a peaceful assembly was held at the Vancouver Art Gallery to show solidarity with the victims of the terrorist attack, while a vigil in their memory was held in Montreal.
In a statement, the Hindu Cultural Society of Toronto expressed its 'deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the innocent victims brutally killed' in the terror attack. It will organise a prayer meeting on Sunday.
The Hindu Sabha Mandir, which was violently invaded by pro-Khalistan elements in November, also issued a statement, in which it said, 'Such reprehensible acts of terrorism against peace loving Hindu tourists, enjoying their vacation time in serene Pahalgam valley, has no place in our law-abiding world.'

Zelensky urges Western allies to allot 0.25% GDP for Ukraine's defense industry

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Ukraine's Western partners to allocate 0.25% of their GDP towards helping Kyiv ramp up weapons production, reported Reuters. Ukraine is in immediate need of improved weaponry and better ammunition.(REUTERS) "Ukraine is part of Europe's security and we want 0.25% of the GDP of a particular partner country to be allocated for our defence industry and domestic production," Zelensky said. "We have launched a program 'Build with Ukraine' and in summer we will sign relevant agreements to start exporting our technologies abroad in the format of opening production lines in European countries," Zelensky said. This year Kyiv had secured $43 billion to finance its domestic weapon production, he added. As Russia is bigger and more equipped than Ukraine, and the strife between the two has been escalating in the past few weeks, Zelensky's country is in immediate need of improved weaponry and better ammunition. Kyiv plans to launch joint weapon production outside of the country and will start exporting some of its military production technologies, the President affirmed. In the remarks released for publication by his office on Saturday, Zelenskiy said Ukraine was in talks with Denmark, Norway, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Lithuania to launch joint weapon production. According to the report, Ukraine's 40% defence needs are presently covered with domestic production, and the government is on the lookout for ways to boost this production in the future. Zelensky attended the G7 summit in Canada last week. He especially wanted to meet US President Donald Trump to discuss the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, help impose stronger sanctions against Russia and urge increased military support for his country. This effort went in vain as Trump left the summit a day early to address the Israel-Iran conflict in Washington. The Ukrainian President is likely to attend the upcoming NATO summit, where he will be meeting several Western leaders. He would also make a second attempt to meet Donald Trump after the G7. Row between Raj Bhavan and Kerala govt. over Bharat Mata portrait escalates

The row between Raj Bhavan and the Kerala government over the former's use of an image of Bharat Mata sitting astride a lion and holding a saffron flag, arguably a symbol of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), at the official State functions hosted by the Raj Bhavan appeared to escalate on Saturday (June 21, 2025). On Saturday, despite protests from the government that the Raj Bhavan's use of the picture of Bharat Mata with the saffron flag at constitutional offices or State events was a mockery of the national flag and the Constitution, Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar began the International Yoga Day celebrations by lighting a lamp in front of the very same garlanded picture, making it clear that his idea of patriotism aligned with the image of Bharat Mata with the saffron flag. On Thursday when the General Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, had walked out of an official function at the Raj Bhavan, protesting over the use of Bharat Mata picture at the State function, Mr. Arlekar had stood his ground, ruling out the removal of the picture from the Raj Bhavan's Central hall, the customary venue of official events. Following this, ABVP workers as well as SFI activists had taken out separate protests in the city, with the former showing the black flag at Mr. Sivankutty, while the SFI marched to the Raj Bhavan shouting slogans against Mr. Arlekar violating constitutional propriety. However, the BJP, which had thrown a surprise by posting a picture of Bharat Mata with the national flag in place of the saffron flag on an official Facebook post, did a volte face on Saturday. In an endorsement of the Raj Bhavan, it organised a programme at the Secretariat gate in the morning, with senior BJP leader V. Muraleedharan garlanding a picture of Bharat Mata with the saffron flag and lighting a lamp in front of it. This is the second day that the row over the saffron flag and Bharat Mata is spilling onto the streets. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) is also marching to the Raj Bhavan later in the day to protest against the Governor's continued use of RSS imagery to depict the country as a Hindu nation Meanwhile, All Kerala Private College Teachers' Association (AKPCTA), said in a statement here that the Raj Bhavan should not be treated as a museum to display Sangh Parivar symbols. It said that it was highly objectionable that the picture of Bharat Mata with the saffron flag was being repeatedly used by the Raj Bhavan even at the Scouts and Guides events. The CPI(M)'s official mouthpiece, Deshabhimani, also used its editorial on Saturday to condemn the Governor and to proclaim that he cannot turn the Raj Bhavan into an office of the RSS. Meanwhile, Congress leader Cherian Philip issued a statement here that the position of the Governor was 'a worthless remnant' of the colonial age and that the post was a refuge for politicians who have lost their foothold on the ground. The continued disputes between the Raj Bhavan and the government was heading for a governance crisis, he added.

Trump Demands Nobel: Internet Calls Him ‘DELUSIONAL' In Viral Backlash

As protests erupt across Los Angeles over ICE operations, plunging the city into a near civil war, like state, Donald Trump has reignited his bid for global recognition, by demanding a Nobel Peace Prize. The former U.S. President claims he deserves not one, but multiple Nobel prizes for his supposed role in de-escalating conflicts from Rwanda to Kashmir. The declaration came just hours after Pakistan formally nominated him for the 2026 prize, citing his "decisive leadership" during Indo-Pak tensions. Trump also announced a vague peace deal between Congo and Rwanda, though no details have been confirmed. Dismissing the Nobel Committee as biased, he said, "They only give it to liberals." His remarks sparked an immediate online storm, with critics calling him 'delusional' and a 'narcissistic psychopath.' Meanwhile, India has firmly rejected his claims of mediation, calling them 'baseless and factually incorrect.' Read More
