Inter Milan strikes late to beat Urawa Reds at Club World Cup

Japan Times13 hours ago

Valentin Carboni struck the winning goal in stoppage time as Inter Milan came from behind to beat Urawa Reds 2-1 on Saturday and knock the J. League team out of the Club World Cup.
Ryoma Watanabe got an early opening goal for Urawa Reds, who were backed by a noisy contingent of their supporters at Lumen Field in Seattle.
But captain Lautaro Martinez had got Inter's equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Monterrey of Mexico in the club's first match at the tournament, and he repeated the trick to level matters on Saturday with 12 minutes to go.
Carboni, the 20-year-old Argentine who had not made an appearance for Inter in more than two years, then appeared in the 92nd minute to give the Italians the victory.
"Our opponents play with their hearts and to counter that as a team we need to play with more pride, be humble and know how to suffer," Martinez told broadcaster DAZN after Inter was made to work for the victory.
The result leaves Cristian Chivu's team in a good position to qualify for the last 16, while a second defeat in as many matches means Urawa won't continue beyond the group stage.

"Our emotion is very bad after this game. We are out of the tournament so now we can only fight in the last game to achieve our one and only win," said Urawa's Polish coach Maciej Skorza.
Winners of the Asian Champions League in 2023, Urawa Reds were aiming to bounce back from a 3-1 loss against River Plate in their opening game and they went in front in the 11th minute.
Takuro Kaneko helped create the goal with a good run down the right before his low cross was swept home first-time by Watanabe.
Martinez hit the crossbar from a header for Inter soon after, and it looked as if the UEFA Champions League runner-up might slip to a shock defeat when Henrikh Mkhitaryan missed the target from a good position in the second half.
But they got the tying goal in the 78th minute when a Nicolo Barella corner from the left was deftly turned in by Martinez, who scored with an overhead kick.
The stage was then set for Carboni, who had not played a competitive game since early October after suffering a serious knee injury while on loan at Marseille.
He was on hand to sidefoot the ball into the net after a Petar Sucic shot hit teammate Francesco Esposito and the ball broke to Carboni inside the area.

Australian Arisa Trew sets new mark at X Games Osaka as Japan athletes shine

At just 15, Arisa Trew became the winningest female skateboarder in X Games history on Sunday when she won the park event at X Games Osaka for her seventh career gold medal in the action sports competition. Trew, whose mother is Japanese and father is Welsh, electrified the crowd at Kyocera Dome with two monster runs in the park final. The Australian took a commanding lead after a score of 90.33 in her first run of the final and then sealed the win with 93.33 points in her second run. That was enough to put her in front of a pair of athletes from the powerhouse host nation. Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Sakura Yosozumi was second with 87.66 points while Hinano Kusaki earned bronze with 85.66 points. Trew also won the women's vert competition on Saturday, which tied her with Leticia Bufoni for the most gold medals of any female skateboarder in X Games history. She went one better on Sunday. 'I'm really happy to be the woman with the most gold medals,' Trew said. 'I am always having fun and challenging myself.' Trew said the win on Sunday was extra special as her relatives from Gifu Prefecture, including her grandmother, came to watch her skate. In the men's street final, Japan's Kairi Netsuke captured his first X Games gold medal. Netsuke, who was third after two runs in the playoffs, produced an impressive run of 92.33 in the final to finish ahead of Juni Kang of South Korea who was second with 91.66 points and Ginwoo Onodera of Japan, who took the bronze with 90.66 points. 'It's my first gold medal and to do it here in Osaka is a real thrill,' Netsuke said. 'It was a very intense competition and I took advantage of my heel tricks which are my specialty.' It wasn't just skateboarding where the host country showed its strength, as Japan swept the podium in Sunday's men's BMX Flatland final. In the event, often referred to as 'breakdancing on a bike,' 42-year-old Yohei Uchino won the gold medal, the first of his career, while Moto Sasaki earned the silver. Yu Katagiri took bronze. 'This is my third time taking part in the X Games,' said Uchino, a native of Hyogo Prefecture. "I was eliminated in the first round the first two times so to win it here in Osaka is very satisfying.' In women's skateboard street on Saturday, Australian Chloe Covell upstaged Japan's Coco Yoshizawa, the Paris Olympic champion, with a near-flawless first run in the final. Yoshizawa finished fourth, also behind teammates Miyu Ito, who took silver with 81.00 and Ibuki Matsumoto, who was third with 77.00. 'My first run in the playoffs was my safe run, I did all the tricks that I knew I could land and I'm really happy that I landed them all,' Covell said. 'I went a bit harder in my second run but just missed a bit of time at the end,' she added. 'For the final, I did the same first run because I knew it would get me a high score.' Yoshizawa fell on her landing off a rail in both runs in the final to miss out on the podium. In the skateboard vert on Saturday, Trew used a variety of tricks including an alley-oop flatspin 540, a backside 540 and a half-cab front noseslide en route to a score of 87.66. As she would do a day later, Trew topped two Japanese skaters to take gold. Asahi Kaihara finished second with 79.00 points while Juno Matsuoka took the bronze with 77.66. Rim Nakamura topped the field with 88.66 points in the BMX park event at X Games Osaka. | X Games Paris Olympian Rim Nakamura won Japan's first gold medal of the Osaka X Games when he took top honors in the men's BMX park on Saturday with 87.00 points. 'I hope young riders will be inspired by this medal,' said the 23-year-old Nakamura after capturing his first X Games gold medal. 'I started when I was 17, so waited a long time for this.' Among the tricks Nakamura completed were a backflip barspin to barspin back combo, a flair no-hander and a 360 double downside tailwhip. Marcus Christopher of the United States was second with 84.66 points followed by Paris Olympic freestyle bronze medalist Anthony Jeanjean of France with 82.00. The X Games have been held in Japan three times previously, all in Chiba Prefecture. The inaugural X Games were held in the summer of 1995 in Providence and Newport, Rhode Island.

Football: Urawa out of Club World Cup after dramatic loss to Inter

SEATTLE (Kyodo) -- Urawa Reds were on the verge of a historic win but lost 2-1 to Inter Milan on Saturday, sending the only Japanese team at the Club World Cup out of the competition after two straight losses in Group E. Ryoma Watanabe's 11th-minute opener seemed enough to hand the J-League side a huge upset win at Lumen Field in Seattle, but the Italian giants broke their resistance through Lautaro Martinez's 78th-minute leveler before Valentine Carboni pounced in second-half stoppage time. Urawa, the 2022-23 Asian Champions League winners, survived early pressure before taking a shock lead when Takuro Kaneko nutmegged Carlos Augusto down the right and cut back for Watanabe, who also shot through the legs of Matteo Darmian to find the net. Watanabe blocked Darmian's close-range volley before Martinez rattled the bar with a 19th-minute header as Inter came roaring back but Urawa, buoyed by the traveling fans' fervent support, held the lead at the break thanks to their only shot in the first half. Inter remained on the front foot in the second half before Watanabe squandered a golden chance to double Urawa's in the 70th minute, blasting over after a pacey Yusuke Matsuo launched a five-on-three counter from inside his own half. Veteran attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan steered wide minutes later for Inter before this season's UEFA Champions League runners-up finally drew level through an intuitive overhead kick from captain Martinez off a corner. Urawa looked to hang on to the point they needed to stay in the tournament but were left devastated when Pater Sucic's blocked low drive inside the box fell nicely for Carboni, who side-footed into the left bottom corner in the second minute of added time. Watanabe almost caught Inter keeper Yann Sommer out with a long free-kick in the dying seconds but the ball was tipped over as Urawa were left without a point, having succumbed to River Plate 3-1 in their opener. "Things turned out the way they did in the end, but we had good spells, including a chance that I didn't take. It's that gap (in quality) in each moment," said Watanabe, eager to take home something from their last game against Monterrey on Wednesday. "We won't make it a dead rubber but an opportunity for us to grow. We'll take each game as an opportunity for that and look to build toward the second half of the J-League season."
