'The Institute' brings Stephen King's dark and suspenseful thriller series to life in first trailer
Stephen King has been my favorite author for as long as I can remember, so the moment I heard 'The Institute' was getting a TV adaptation, I was instantly on board. MGM Plus gave us a few first-look images last year, but now the streamer has dropped the official trailer along with a release date: July 13, 2025.
For those who aren't familiar with King's work, 'The Institute" centers around a brilliant teenager who's abducted from his home and wakes up in a mysterious facility. There, he discovers he's not alone since dozens of other kids have been taken just like him, all of them gifted with strange, supernatural powers.
It's part 'Stranger Things,' part 'Firestarter,' and classic King in its exploration of power and the abuse of authority. This is definitely one worth adding to your watchlist next month.
The trailer introduces us to Luke (Joe Freeman) as he wakes up inside the mysterious facility known as the Institute, where he discovers he's not alone — other kids with strange abilities are being held there too.
He quickly crosses paths with the cold and calculating Ms. Sigsby (Mary-Louise Parker), who tries to convince him that the purpose of the Institute is for the greater good. As Luke endures disturbing experiments, he learns the other kids are quietly planning a way out. Meanwhile, a separate storyline follows Tim (Ben Barnes), a former cop digging into something suspicious.
The rest of the trailer builds toward a powerful turning point, with Luke emerging as a leader among the kidnapped kids. He begins to unite the group, encouraging them to stand up to their captors and take control of their fate.
Along with the trailer we also got an official synopsis, which reads: 'The Institute follows the story of teen genius Luke Ellis (Freeman), who is kidnapped and awakens at The Institute, a facility full of children who all got there the same way he did and who are all possessed of unusual abilities.

'In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson (Barnes) has come looking to start a new life, but the peace and quiet won't last, as his story and Luke's are destined to collide.'
The series is helmed by director and executive producer Jack Bender, known for his work on 'Lost' and 'From' (one of my favorite shows ever), with the script penned by Benjamin Cavell, who previously wrote for 'Justified' and 'The Stand.' Both bring plenty of Stephen King experience to the table, having tackled his haunting stories before.
Stephen King is on board as an executive producer, joining forces with Bender, Cavell, Gary Barber, Sam Sheridan, and Ed Redlich to bring the series to life. With King involved behind the scenes, fans can expect the show to hold true to the novel's intense, unsettling tone.
Joining Freeman, Barnes, and Parker are joined by other strong talents including Simone Miller as Kalisha, Fionn Laird as Nick, Viggo Hanvelt as Avery, Arlen So as George, Julian Richings as Stackhouse, Robert Joy as Hendricks, and Hannah Galway as Wendy.
In the TV adaptation, Luke's age has been increased by a few years compared to the original novel, and the same change applies to several other characters as well. During the panel at Content London (h/t Variety), Bender said: 'We were very aware of not wanting this to be as awful as it can be, what these kids go through. We didn't want it to be a sadistic experience. There's a fine line and, god knows, as storytellers we didn't want to go there.'
MGM Plus has been drawing plenty of attention with its recent horror-thriller lineup, especially with hits like 'From,' which quickly became one of their standout series. They're also familiar territory when it comes to Stephen King adaptations, having worked on a limited series based on 'Jerusalem's Lot,' a prequel story to King's 'Salem's Lot.'
The streaming service plans to release new episodes of 'The Institute' on a weekly basis to build anticipation and keep viewers coming back regularly. There will be eight episodes in total to enjoy.
No matter if you've been reading King for decades or are just stepping into his universe for the first time, 'The Institute' is shaping up to be one of the most unmissable TV releases of summer 2025.
'The Institute' premieres with two episodes on July 13, 9pm ET/PT on MGM Plus.

Travis Van Winkle likens 'Fubar' S2 to 'Real World: Road Rules'

"it's kind of like Real World: Road Rules meets the CIA and there's a lot of chaos," Van Winkle told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. Season 1 ended with Tally Brunner (Fabiana Udenio) discovering both her ex-husband Luke (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and their daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) are secret agents who have been lying to her for years about their globe-trotting adventures. After a dangerous mission goes sideways, Luke, Tally and Emma, as well as Luke's team -- Barry (Milan Carter), Roo (Fortune Feimster) and Aldon (Van Winkle) -- end up in the witness protection program, sharing a house with Tally's miserable former fiance Donnie (Andy Buckley) and Emma's ex, Carter, (Jay Baruchel). That's where Season 2 -- now streaming on Netflix -- picks up. "I think having us all in the same room, trying to figure it out, for me, was always so fun. It felt like a big party on set when we were all there," Van Winkle said. Carter agreed with Van Winkle's categorization of the on-set vibe, but he also detailed some of the challenges that came with capturing those hilarious group scenes. "It felt like a party, but, I will say, Season 1, when we had to go to the CIA room, you knew you were going to be there for a long time because everybody's got to get [camera] coverage," he said. "So, you're shooting in the house and you've got 11 people, just know you're going to be there all day," he laughed. "When Season 2 kicks off, we have a lot of cabin fever. It's like three months after the church scene, where identities are revealed. So, now, we have spent way too much time with each other and are at the point of breaking, but we've got to save the world." A big change story-wise in Season 2 is that a lot of civilians now know more than they should about the agents' secret identities and missions. "It ain't fun having your mom, which Fabiana plays, she's basically Barry's mama in the show, knowing all of your business and, while you're trying to save the world, you've also got to talk her off a ledge and comfort her. It ain't easy." Feimster said her character Roo takes on added responsibility this season. "My character has a journey of kind of growing up a little bit and and taking some leadership roles," Feimster said. "It was interesting to go from like the super-ridiculous, inappropriate one last season, which I still have that, but having to step it up a little bit more." Van Winkle's favorite part of Season 2 was working with a new member of the cast -- a pig. "I've always loved animals and I actually grew up with a pig," the actor said. "My pig's name was Crazy Carl," he added. "He was a small, little guy we rescued from a farm and he turned into this massive pig, so I got to reunite with a swine and I really enjoyed having most of my scenes with this cute little guy named Dexter." Carter was most excited to explore Barry's crush on Tina (Aparna Brielle), an NSA analyst who is probably a double agent. "It's like going to your family reunion and everybody says, 'Yo, you know Tina's not for you, bro,'" Carter said about his team's lack of support for his budding relationship. "It made me really look forward to seeing where Barry and Tina were going to go this season and it's quite the journey." The cast members said they are still having fun working with Schwarzenegger, an action-movie legend they grew up watching in films like Terminator, Total Recall and True Lies. "He's such a treat because you never know what you're going to get," Feimster said. "You're either going to laugh a lot with him or you're going to get a motivational speech or learn about some kind of fascinating Hollywood story or all these iconic movies or actors you've heard of your whole life," she added. "It's never a dull moment." Van Winkle said the crew has learned the best way to get Schwarzenegger to where he needs to be isn't to interrupt him. "They just kind of walk behind him [and nudge him along] to try and let him finish his story," Van Winkle said. "Sometimes, that went on for quite a while, but when Arnold is telling you a Hollywood story, you've just got to let it play out." New Featurette For Stephen King's THE LIFE OF CHUCK Focuses on The Amazing Cast — GeekTyrant
A new featurette for the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Life of Chuck . has been released and it focuses on the incredible supporting ensemble cast, and what they bring to the movie. The video highlights Heather Langenkamp, Mia Sara, Carl Lumbly, Matthew Lillard, David Dastmalchian, Karen Gillan, Annalise Basso, and Harvey Guillen. This is such a great, wonderful, and inspiring film and it's one that people have to go out and experience on the big screen! Director Mike Flanagan did an amazing job bringing this story to life! The Life of Chuck is 'three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor at 39 and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.' The film is described as an apocalyptic version of It's a Wonderful Life , and King, who has seen the film, says that it's 'a happiness machine.' It's also described as 'a Stand By Me for the multiple lives within each of us, pulled between our dreams and down-to-earth pragmatism.' Hiddleston previously talked about the film, saying: 'Well, he's written something very tender and very wise. I think there is a great wisdom in the soul of the story, which is that it takes courage to hold on to what is good in a world that feels like it's falling apart.' When talking about the disaster aspect of the story, Flanagan explains why this one is different: 'A disaster movie has people meeting the end while running from tidal waves, and this story has people sitting quietly holding hands looking at the stars.' Hiddleston went on to say: 'The life of every human being is a constellation, as expressed in this film. There are certain moments which will burn most brightly as individual stars. 'Sometimes it feels like the world is going to hell in a handcart, and it's full of pain and suffering, and it is—but there are moments of deep joy and deep connection.' The movie is now playing in theaters.

Stephen King Praises "Scary" Horror Series Streaming For Free
For fans interested in finding a new horror series worth watching, it's always a good idea to look at the recommendations made by author Stephen King. In addition to his own library of classic works that include the likes of Carrie and The Shining , King often takes time to highlight the projects of other creators. Now fans can check out one 'scary' horror series recommended by Stephen King that's currently streaming. The recommendations made by King on social media platforms over the years have continued to have a life of their own, with fans consistently reviving titles mentioned by King on X or Threads. For this particular recommendation, King recommended this title in 2019, with King calling the series both 'scary' and 'involving.' The series is currently available to stream via a variety of platforms, including PLEX and Xumo Play where it's currently free, as well as platforms like AMC Plus.
