‘Bahrain's GDP growth to double this year, to reach 2.8%'

Daily Tribune23-03-2025

Bahrain's economy is expected to gather pace this year, with GDP growth forecast to double to 2.8 per cent, led once again by the non-oil sector.
Across the Gulf, overall growth is projected to reach 4 per cent in 2025, despite continued global unease.
The figures come from a report by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), which notes that this marks a 1.8 percentage point rise on 2024's estimated growth across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.
The report points to Bahrain's hosting of Gateway Gulf in November last year, held under the banner Investing in a Rapidly Transforming Region. The event wrapped up with $12 billion worth of deals across finance, tourism, real estate, and industry — reflecting Bahrain's ongoing effort to branch out beyond oil.
In Bahrain, the non-oil economy is expected to grow by 3.1 per cent in 2025. The oil sector, meanwhile, is set to recover and lend support.
Expansion
The labour market is likely to expand, with gains in financial services, insurance, and hospitality.
Overhaul
Bahrain's 2030 economic blueprint is expected to increase capacity and give the energy sector a lift. Oil growth for 2025 is forecast at 0.9 per cent.
Oil output across the Gulf is also expected to rise from April, following two years of contraction.
Estimate
That push includes the $6 billion overhaul of the Bapco refinery.
The upgrade, part of Bahrain's broader strategy, aims to boost the sector's capacity.
Saudi Arabia's production is forecast to reach 9.3 million barrels per day this year — up slightly from last year's 9.1 million — raising the kingdom's oil sector growth estimate to 1.9 per cent, compared to an earlier projection of 1 per cent.

GCC Surges Ahead Despite Global Slump

The Gulf economies are expected to grow faster than earlier projected, defying a broader global downturn and weak oil prices, according to the latest ICAEW Economic Insight report released on Monday. The Q2 update revises the GCC's 2025 GDP forecast upward to 4.4% from 4.0%, underscoring the region's resilience amid rising trade barriers and fiscal pressures. Prepared by Oxford Economics for ICAEW, the report contrasts the GCC's improved outlook with the downgrade in global GDP growth to 2.4%, the slowest pace since the 2020 pandemic shock. Oil and beyond A key driver behind the upgraded outlook is a faster-than-expected reversal of OPEC+ production cuts, which has lifted oil sector growth projections from 3.2% to 4.5%. However, the Brent crude average for 2025 is still forecast at a modest $67.3 per barrel, limiting fiscal space for several states. Only the UAE and Qatar are projected to maintain surpluses in 2025. Most other member states are likely to face tightening budgets, with Saudi Arabia forecast to run a deficit of 3.4% of GDP as spending outpaces oil revenues. Still, non-oil sectors are holding up strongly across the region, with forecast growth of 4.1% in 2025 driven by domestic demand, investment momentum, and diversification initiatives. The report highlights that the region remains well-positioned to absorb trade rebalances resulting from the 10% US tariff on GCC imports, which excludes energy products and has limited impact due to low US export exposure. Leaders of the pack Saudi Arabia's GDP forecast has been revised up to 5.2% for 2025, driven by strong oil output and a 5.3% projected rise in non-oil activities. Despite an 18% year-on-year drop in oil revenues during Q1 and growing fiscal deficits, investor confidence remains firm, with S&P upgrading the Kingdom's credit rating to A+. The UAE is expected to post 5.1% growth in 2025, supported by a 4.7% rise in non-oil GDP, increased oil output, and continued strength in tourism and investment. The D33 agenda and AI-focused collaborations are seen as key contributors to its expanding economic base. Dubai's 5.3 million international visitors in Q1 highlight the momentum in the tourism sector, projected to contribute nearly 13% of the UAE's GDP this year. Future outlook While the global economy struggles under trade tensions and slowdowns, the Gulf appears to be charting its own course, powered by diversification, infrastructure spending, and a strategic recalibration of oil production.

Armenia Announces Visa-Free Travel for Citizens

Citizens and residents of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain will be able to travel to Armenia from next month onwards without needing a visa. Effective July 1, 2025, Armenia will introduce visa-free entry for citizens and residents of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, as part of a strategic initiative to strengthen economic relations, boost tourism, and facilitate business opportunities between Armenia and the GCC member states. This significant development aims to enhance Armenia's attractiveness as an accessible and welcoming destination within the South Caucasus, particularly appealing to visitors from: UAE Saudi Arabia Kuwait Qatar Bahrain Oman The new visa free policy will apply to all passport holders from GCC member states, enabling travel for tourism, leisure, or business purposes without a visa for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Additionally, individuals holding valid residency permit issued by any of the GCC countries with at least six months of validity from the date of entry to Armenia, will also be eligible for visa-free entry, thereby broadening the accessibility for a substantial segment of the GCC expatriate communities. Officials have highlighted the timeliness of this decision, noting the growing interest among GCC nationals and residents in exploring nearby destinations. A statement on state-run Armenpress news agency said: 'The Armenian government has lifted visa requirements for citizens of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Oman, as well as persons having residence permits in several other countries. 'The decision was made at the Cabinet meeting on May 22 and is expected to boost tourism and investments. 'Citizens of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Oman will no longer need visa to enter Armenia. Foreign nationals who hold residence permit in the US, EU countries, Schengen agreement countries, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or Oman will likewise no longer need visa to enter Armenia'. Lusine Gevorgyan, Chairman of the Tourism Committee of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic added: 'This milestone reflects our dedication to making Armenia more accessible to regional travellers. 'We look forward to welcoming more guests from the GCC who seek meaningful travel experiences – whether through our ancient monasteries, vibrant food scene, or immersive cultural festivals.' The Tourism Committee of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia anticipates that the visa waiver will further stimulate collaboration with the GCC. The initiative supports a broader tourism strategy, which includes enhanced air connectivity, improved visitor infrastructure, and dynamic destination marketing across global markets. The Eurasian country previously introduced visa-free travel for UAE citizens in 2017, Qatar citizens in 2019 and Kuwait citizens in 2022 – successful moves that laid the foundation for this expanded regional visa policy.
