WRUR programme proves effective bridge between govt, people
ALOR GAJAH: The 'Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat' (WRUR) programme is seen as playing a crucial role as a bridge between the government and the people in efforts to resolve various issues and provide for the needs at the grassroots level.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the four WRUR series held so far have proven the effectiveness of the programme, with nearly 1,000 public complaints received and the majority of them resolved within two weeks.
'The public is definitely more confident in the existing government's administration and our concern as administrators, as we will also continue to serve the people as best we can.
'With this bridge, namely the WRUR, we can ensure that every need of the public can be addressed... this effectiveness is by the people for the people,' he told reporters here today.
He said this after officiating the closing of the Lendu State Legislative Assembly WRUR programme, which was also attended by Lendu assemblyman Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
Elaborating, Rauf said the achievements of the WRUR programme implementation also encompassed various aspects, including development, education and welfare, based on the complaints that were resolved.
He added that this was through various upcoming projects aimed at improving infrastructure, public facilities, road and drainage repairs, flood risk management and public welfare at every WRUR series, including in opposition areas.
'For the Lendu state assembly WRUR, we successfully carried out 145 projects and attended to 269 complaints, of which 183 issues were resolved within two weeks, while the rest are still being addressed.
'This includes an allocation of RM2 million that was announced for the flood retention pond rehabilitation project for the Solok Duku and Durian Daun areas, as well as several other facilities for the local community,' he said.
He added that an allocation of RM1.5 million has also been set aside for the upgrading of a shooting range and dormitory for RELA (People's Volunteer Corps) personnel, which are expected to be completed in August.
He said that complicated complaints and requests would not be pushed aside, but instead brought to the state government for comprehensive monitoring, scrutiny and coordination.
'The state government will constantly strive to ensure the people benefit directly through initiatives that not only safeguard welfare but also drive economic and social development,' he said.

4.8 million Sara recipients use MyKad to buy essential items
GEORGE TOWN: A total of 4.8 million out of 5.4 million recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid have used their MyKad to purchase basic necessities at registered premises nationwide as of this month. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said Perlis recorded the highest usage rate at 94 per cent, followed by 93 per cent in Sabah and Kedah, while Penang recorded 88 per cent. She said the figures reflect the growing effectiveness of the initiative, supported by various awareness and promotional efforts at both federal and state levels. "The ministry will continue to strengthen awareness campaigns to ensure more people benefit from this government aid, which is aimed at easing their financial burden. "We have also significantly expanded the number of recipients from 700,000 to 5.4 million since April," she told reporters during a Sara outreach programme at a hypermarket here today. At the event, Lim met with 100 Sara recipients in Penang as part of the ministry's effort to engage directly with urban communities. She said to date, 3,700 retail premises have registered under the programme nationwide, enabling recipients to shop closer to home. In Penang alone, 190 such premises are available. Lim added that since May 1, the programme was enhanced by expanding the list of eligible items to 14 categories, including household and personal hygiene products, medicines, and school supplies like uniforms and shoes. The maximum Sara aid for 2025 has been raised to RM2,100 from RM1,200 — a 75 per cent increase, she said. Malaysians Need To Earn Average RM4000 To Introduce GST, Says Anwar
Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) remains unsuitable for now, citing the rakyat's low income threshold as a key concern. Speaking during the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar explained that although GST is recognised as an efficient and transparent taxation mechanism, it imposes a comprehensive financial burden — particularly on low-income earners. 'We postponed (GST) because the income of the people was still too low. My opinion at the time was that people with an income of RM2,000 were still affected although we gave some exemptions,' he said. He highlighted how even though basic necessities such as sugar and rice may be exempt, GST still applies indirectly when people purchase other goods or use public transport. 'It is comprehensive,' he noted. The government, according to Anwar, would only revisit GST implementation when the average household income reaches a more reasonable level — at least RM4,000 a month. 'Let the people's income increase first… maybe at that time we can (implement it). Right now, there are people earning RM1,700 or RM2,000,' he said. For now, the government is focused on a more targeted Sales and Service Tax (SST) system. He said tax revenue collected through SST will be channelled into core public sectors such as education and healthcare. 'The allocation for the Ministry of Education from RM58 billion in 2024 has increased to RM64 billion this year. Similarly, for the Ministry of Health, RM41 billion last year… we are adding RM4 billion to make it RM45 billion,' Anwar said. GST was introduced on Apr 1, 2015, with a standard rate of 6%, but was later repealed on Sept 1, 2018, following widespread criticism over its impact on consumers, particularly those from lower income brackets. It was replaced with the SST system. On 9 June, the government announced a targeted review of the Sales Tax rate and an expanded scope for the Service Tax, effective 1 July, aimed at strengthening Malaysia's fiscal position by increasing revenue while protecting essential goods from new taxes. Will the US$499 Trump phone be made in Alabama or China?

President Donald Trump's company said it is launching the Trump Mobile cell phone service, which it claimed is 'designed to deliver top-tier connectivity, unbeatable value and all-American service for our nation's hardest-working people.' Along with the service, Trump Mobile is rolling out the US$499 (RM 2,123) T1 Phone in August, a 'gold smartphone engineered for performance and proudly designed and built in the United States for customers who expect the best from their mobile carrier.' But The Wall Street Journal is reporting that, according to the company, Alabama will be one of three states where the phones will be made. A spokesman for the Trump Organization told the Journal that 'manufacturing for the new phone will be in Alabama, California and Florida.' The Trump Organization did not respond to a request from for more information. Eric Trump did say Monday that the first wave of phones wouldn't be built in the US. 'You can build these phones in the United States,' he told podcaster Benny Johnson. 'Eventually, all the phones can be built in the United States of America. We have to bring manufacturing back here.' The Journal is a bit sceptical that any American-made cellphone will show up soon. Earlier this year, the newspaper quizzed supply-chain experts on how quickly a completely US-made phone on the order of the iPhone could appear. They projected years and a multi-billion dollar commitment to build the infrastructure necessary, which would result in a phone more expensive than the iPhones made in China. The Journal's deputy tech editor Wilson Rothman said in the Journal's 'Tech News Podcast' that there are currently phones that resemble the specs of the T1 phone at this price point that are made in China. 'The thing about manufacturing phones in America is you have to have an infrastructure,' Rothman said. 'You have to have a workforce. You have to have things that you can't just snap your fingers or even throw US$500bil (RM2.13 trillion) at. It's not a problem that can be solved just with money. It really is a decades-in-the works kind of project.' Regardless, Rothman said the Trump phone could do well in capitalising 'on the frustration of people (with) their wireless plans.' And despite being advertised as an American-made phone, 'it is likely that this device will be initially produced by a Chinese (original design manufacturer),' Counterpoint Research analyst Blake Przesmicki wrote in a June 16 note, according to Variety . 'Max Weinbach, an analyst at research firm Creative Strategies, in a post on X, said the T1 Phone is likely being made by Wingtech, which is owned by Chinese company Luxshare. 'Same device as the T-Mobile REVVL 7 Pro 5G, custom body,' Weinbach wrote in the post, Variety reprted. 'Wingtech, now owned byLuxshare, makes it in Jiaxing, Wuxi, or Kunming China.' – News Service
