Help turn Amaravati into another Hyderabad, Naidu urges industry

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday urged industry to help him turn Amaravati, the new capital of his state, into another Hyderabad, but also flagged the need for pursuing responsible capitalism.
Speaking at the concluding session of the Confederation of Indian Industry's (CII's) Annual Business Summit here, the 75-year-old leader spoke of the need to treat people as capital and not as liability to address increasing income disparity. He said his vision is of initiating a 'P4 model' for inclusive growth where P4 stands for public-private-people partnership.
Naidu recalled how he pioneered India's first wave of infrastructure reforms through public-private partnership (PPP) models in power, telecom, roads, and ports. While they brought development, they also increased disparities, he said. The Andhra CM said he hailed from a middle-class farming family, but got opportunities at crucial junctures in his life. He referred to how B R Ambedkar, the architect of India's Constitution, and former President A P J Abdul Kalam received crucial help from benefactors. 'I urge India's top 10 per cent wealth creators to mentor and handhold the bottom 20 per cent. This is the essence of responsible capitalism,' he said.
'For over three decades now, you have understood and engaged with my vision and knowledge. Back in the mid-1990s, the CII was still an emerging platform, struggling to find relevance in India. I was often cautioned that associating with industrialists or attending global forums like Davos would tarnish my image as pro-rich and cost me votes. Despite these warnings, I continued to visit Davos whenever I held office, from 1995 onwards, even though many chief ministers at the time did not,' he recalled.
To CII President Sanjiv Puri's remark that industrialists referred to him as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Andhra Pradesh and not as the state's CM, Naidu said the moniker hurt him politically. But he pointed out that entrepreneurs generate wealth and revenue, which help fund impactful welfare programmes. "Without wealth you cannot have welfare programmes," he said.
During the years when the CII Partnership Summit was held in Hyderabad, it brought immense visibility and investment. 'Now, I seek your support to bring investment to Andhra Pradesh, so we can continue creating wealth. We are at a truly inspiring moment in time,' the Andhra CM said, adding that it is fortunate for the country that at this critical juncture it has 'the right leader' in Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Naidu said India is the fourth-largest economy, and will soon become the third-largest. 'But from this point on, the real competition begins with China and the US. The industry must prepare to meet this challenge,' he said, adding that India lags behind in manufacturing and needs to strengthen its ability to produce globally competitive products.
He said during his first term as the CM of undivided Andhra, from 1995 onwards, he built a thriving ecosystem, especially in Hyderabad, which now contributes 70 per cent of Telangana's income. While Hyderabad was a 'brownfield' capital, 'destiny has allowed me to build a greenfield capital in Amaravati', he said and invited industry to help him build it. Naidu detailed the various projects that are coming up in Amaravati, including India's first Quantum Computing Centre. He also sought industry's support in establishing a Global Leadership Centre in Amaravati to train entrepreneurs and political leaders.
The Andhra CM elaborated on his government's tieup with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Kuppam to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare and establish real-time medical monitoring. He also talked about the river-interlinking projects Andhra, and the plans to establish aquaculture, horticulture, and agri-processing zones in the state to increase rural income.
To a question on how Andhra stands out at a time when several states are involved in competitive federalism, Naidu said there are so many brands but only a few will have value, and 'CBN (Chandrababu Naidu) is a brand'. He said 'credibility' cannot be earned overnight, it takes time to build.

Shifting of high tension towers delay Vijayawada West bypass road works

Vijayawada: The full-fledged completion of the Vijayawada West bypass road is likely to be pushed to the end of the year or early next year. The shifting of the High Tension (HT) line towers spanning approximately 520 metre on the package-III stretch from Gannavaram to Gollapudi is expected to take another three months. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The 47.8 km Vijayawada Western Bypass, being constructed under Bharat Mala Pariyojana, starts from Chinna Avutapalli in Gannavaram and culminates at Chinna Kakani on the outskirts of Mangalagiri. It will bypass the vehicular traffic going towards Chennai and Hyderabad from Visakhapatnam and vice versa, as vehicles could bypass without entering Vijayawada city, significantly reducing the traffic burden on the city. While the Bharat Mala Pariyojana road infrastructure project was divided into four packages, the works on the first two packages—package-I from Gundugolanu to Kalaparru and package-II from Kalaparru to Chinna Avutapalli, which includes the six-laning of the highway road—were completed. The completion of package-III and package-IV from Chinna Avutapalli to Gollapudi and Gollapudi to Chinna Kakani has hit multiple roadblocks, resulting in the delay of the inauguration of the Vijayawada Western Bypass. "Originally, the bypass road was to be completed by March 2025. However, govt objected to the bypass not having road cuttings to the roads within the Amaravati capital, which led to its delay for some time. Following this, the bypass road project hit the HT lines roadblock, wherein HT line towers near Nunna stretching nearly 1.2 km had to be shifted due to their positioning right within the project alignment," an NHAI official said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Earlier, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, during a review meeting, directed the officials to complete the bypass road works by June and to allow vehicles to ply along the bypass to ease the traffic congestion. "We missed the June deadline given by the chief minister as the problem to shift HT line towers in around a 520-metre stretch is still pending resolution. We are awaiting the shifting of the HT line towers, which is expected to take another three months, thus to fast-track the remaining works, which would be completed in a short span," the NHAI official said.

Bharat Mata portrait row triggers protests; CPM mouthpiece slams guv

Thiruvananthapuram/Kozhikode: The Bharat Mata portrait row involving governor Rajendra V Arlekar and the state govt intensified on Saturday, with protests erupting across various parts of the state and CPM's mouthpiece Deshabhimani publishing a hard-hitting editorial against Raj Bhavan. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a strongly worded editorial, Deshabhimani asserted that Raj Bhavan is not a "shakha" (unit) of RSS. It accused the governor of publicly challenging the Constitution by turning Raj Bhavan into a venue to display and propagate RSS ideology. How else could this act be described, if not as a blatant violation of constitutional norms, it asked. According to the latest photos released by Raj Bhavan, the governor paid floral tributes to the portrait during the Yoga Day celebrations held there on Saturday. Raj Bhavan also dismissed reports that its security would be handed over to the central forces due to threats from opposition youth organisations. "The governor has total faith in the commitment to duty and efficiency of Kerala police in the discharge of their responsibility. ...," a statement from Raj Bhavan said. CITU took out a protest march to Raj Bhavan, accusing the governor of attempting to turn it into a centre of RSS activity and violating the Constitution. SFI raised a banner in front of the Sanskrit College in Palayam, declaring that "Raj Bhavan is not RSS's ancestral property". In Kozhikode, a protest by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) against general education minister V Sivankutty, who had walked out of an event at Raj Bhavan over the portrait, ended in a clash with SFI workers. The BJYM workers staged the protest when the minister arrived at Jubilee Hall to attend an event organised in connection with the upcoming SFI national conference in the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As the minister arrived, Yuva Morcha workers waved black flags. However, a group of SFI workers present at the venue tried to stop them, leading to the clash. Police intervened and took the protesters into custody. Sivankutty later alleged that the RSS faction controlling Raj Bhavan had orchestrated the demonstrations against him in Kozhikode. In protest against the police action, BJP workers staged a demonstration near the venue at Tali Temple. They burnt an effigy of Sivankutty and alleged that police personnel deployed in the area were aiding SFI workers in unleashing violence against BJYM activists. BJP district president Prakash Babu warned that the party would continue its protest if the police failed to take appropriate action against the SFI workers who, he claimed, attacked Yuva Morcha activists in custody. Meanwhile, BJP workers paid floral tributes to portraits of Bharat Mata, similar to the one placed in Raj Bhavan, at various district centres as a mark of protest against the LDF govt's stand on the issue.
