Like in e- and mobile banking the e-invoicing as an interconnecting-customers service was not started off as a good-for-society at large program – but for customer convenience.
I still remember how customers complained that we had outsourced the keying in on ever-growing lengths of reference numbers and other payment data from branch and back-office staff to them. And then we charged a monthly fee for e-banking from the outset in the 80s (lifesaver for e-banking upgrade investments). The cost savings from not having to use time on travels to branches or mail invoices was not in the calculations. Direct debit never became – despite much pushing – a popular alternative.
So – after some pondering in the mid-90s (sorry about the bragging) – we introduced e-invoicing where the payment proposal could be approved with one click in home- and SME-banking. It was also possible to make a standing order – that routine invoices where paid automatically – and also set €-limits for automated bill payments.
Fine – but a huge eye-opener arrived when the State Treasury presented a calculation that cost savings for incoming invoices. Paper or PDF was estimated to cost 30€ (costs much higher in eg Electrolux and Nokia) and eInvoice 11€ giving a saving potential of150m€/year.
The Municipal Association arrived at the same 150m€/year. On European level 21,6 bn€ tax payer's money could be saved. And this was only for purchase invoices -and in the pre-automation stage.
The next target was to get down to an estimated 1€/invoice with full automation.
Then the Finnish Federation of Industries came up with their own estimate for purchase invoices – 2,8 bn€/year… So a total 3bn equalling 220 EU-billions… Add to that time saved at home, CO2 effects, lower fraud rates, less grey economy effects and so many opportunities to automate all sorts of processes with rich structured data.
Made us feel really important and the EU commission invited me to become chairman for the EU Expert Group and eInvoicing.
The first reactions here as well – it cannot be true! As if the savings would not be big enough… Slowish uptake during the first 5 years - even if banks had ready simple e-banking-integrated solutions for sending and receiving e-invoices (also as files).
How could this be? Of course, a saving near 1% of turnover is small in a small enterprise. And accounting firms did not – oddly enough – start to promote e-invoicing properly. And the cost of old manual paper and PDF-practises was not shown – while e-invoicing operators naturally had to charge for their services. Invoice receivers should have used their rights and upfront have set deadlines for or at least charge for incoming papers and pictures.
What did we learn? That these kinds of productivity leaps cannot wait for slowly fading change resistance. If enterprise organisations cannot drive the change with information about the big picture and demanding more and better digital – then it is up to the politicians. Even if some loud voters will not like it.

Reform will ensure non-doms contribute to Britain

A record-breaking and alarming exodus of high-spending, high-tax-paying residents, leaving an estimated £7 billion yearly hole in public finances and inflicting huge collateral damage on London's position as Europe's financial centre. The social contract between the rich and the poor is at an all-time low. Public trust in the tax system has been eroded by perceptions that elites play by a different set of rules. In the past, your average Briton saw little to no benefit from the wealthy in their midst. If anything, it created greater division and hostility. Reform UK is determined to change this. Crucially, 100 per cent of this contribution is hypothecated to Britain's lowest-paid full-time workers, delivered automatically by HMRC as a tax-free cash dividend. This means roughly 2.5 million hard-working Britons – the grafters who keep this country running – will receive an annual cash bonus, sent directly to their bank accounts at the end of the financial year. Thanks to this policy, in a low-uptake scenario with 6,000 cards issued annually, we'll generate a £1.5 billion fund, resulting in a tax-free annual dividend of £600 per worker. In a high-uptake scenario with 10,000 cards, this could deliver a £2.5 billion fund, providing £1,000 per worker. This isn't just a number. It's money in the pockets of those who need it most, from cleaners to nurses to small-business owners. Our policy is not a 'golden visa' or a backdoor to citizenship. It is a one-time flat tax paid by newcomers in exchange for the certainty of a favourable tax status. Individuals will still be liable for all standard UK taxes on UK-sourced income, property, and spending. But they won't be taxed on offshore income and gains for the duration of their agreed status. Pay your quarter million pounds upfront, and enjoy UK residency without worldwide taxation hassles. After all, this is still the best country in the world, and many of the world's wealthy want to move here but are deterred by the economic downsides. Unlike the old, indefinite non-dom arrangement under the Tories, which lacked transparency and failed to benefit ordinary people, our solution is immediate, visible, and mutually beneficial for both newcomers and the hard-working British worker struggling to make ends meet. Unlike Labour's punitive approach, which drives wealth away, we incentivise the rich to return to Britain. Over the past decade, the number of non-dom taxpayers has plummeted from over 120,000 to fewer than 80,000. The failed approaches of both Labour and the Conservatives have cost this country billions annually. Reform UK's plan will reverse this trend, capturing revenue from global wealth, channelling funds to support the working class, and restoring London as a global powerhouse for business, finance, and investment. The driving ambition of Reform UK is to put the lives of everyday British citizens first – and this policy does exactly that. We are the party of working people, and we are building a Britain where wealth and opportunity are shared, not hoarded. By ensuring that every pound contributed by the wealthy goes directly to those who get up early and work hard, we are creating a fairer, stronger, and more prosperous nation for all.

As UK households struggle with energy bills, staff at industry watchdog Ofgem enjoy 'woke' quizzes and Pride movie nights at 4.30pm on a Tuesday
Officials working for energy regulator Ofgem have spent thousands of pounds on ' woke ' events including movie nights and quizzes during working hours, the Mail can reveal. At a time when Britain has been hit with some of the highest energy prices in Europe, the quango tasked with regulating such matters has a host of 'staff networks' given money to hold gatherings over the past year. They included a 'Pride Movie Night', which started at 4.30pm on a Tuesday last July, as well as an 'End of Pride Quiz' which ran from 4pm to 5.30pm later that month. Another gathering organised by the LGBT + network was on 'Perspectives from Rainbow Regulators' which ran for almost 90 minutes on a Thursday afternoon last September. The quango also held an event on the 'art and history of black hair' which lasted 75 minutes on a work day in October. In total, Ofgem has spent £66,954 of the internal HR Equity, Diversity and Inclusion budget on staff networks since 2021, although funding was stopped in May 2024. The figures were revealed in response to a Freedom of Information request by the TaxPayers' Alliance and shared exclusively with the Mail. Ofgem has come under fire in recent years over the cost of bills, its handling of the prepayment meter scandal and its failure to prevent suppliers going bust. Joanna Marchong, of the TPA, said: 'It's beyond parody that as Brits face some of the highest energy prices in the world, our energy watchdog is spending time on woke movie nights and quizzes. 'Ofgem has repeatedly failed billpayers with its endless meddling in the energy market, which has both added to the costs of bills while also failing to prevent major firms from going bust. 'It's clear that there is a complete lack of focus on the core priorities of the organisation.' An Ofgem spokesman said: 'Our workforce reflects the communities we serve, offering a wide range of experiences and skills which helps to support our work as an effective energy regulator.' The spokesperson added: 'Staff networks are no longer funded centrally following the introduction of the EDI Expenditure rules last year.' Firms are spared green levy Thousands of businesses will be exempt from paying green levies in an industry shake-up, the Prime Minister will announce. Sir Keir Starmer will vow to slash energy bills for more than 7,000 firms by up to 25 per cent from 2027 when he launches his industrial strategy today. The ten-year plan to promote growth will see some firms exempted from the Renewables Obligation and Feed-in Tariffs. Manufacturers have previously warned energy costs are much higher in the UK than overseas. Government sources insisted the move would not be funded by raising taxes or household bills. Sir Keir said last night the plan would deliver 'long-term certainty' for British businesses.

UK loses top spot for foreign investment in renewable energy
The number of green energy and utility sector projects attracting inward investment into Britain fell by 57 per cent last year, according to a new analysis. The slump resulted in the UK losing its top spot to France as the leading European destination for foreign direct investment into utilities and energy supply, EY found. The professional services firm pointed to the contrast with a 'surge in inward investment in renewables in 2023', owing to the timing of auction rounds for renewables. However, the decline comes at a time that the government is seeking to step up investment to secure its decarbonisation goals and to reduce Britain's reliance on volatile international gas markets. Lee Downham, energy and resources lead at EY in Britain, said: 'The UK must continue to attract a strong pipeline of renewable investments if it's to achieve its energy security ambitions. 'While investors have traditionally viewed the UK as an appealing destination for clean energy, lengthy planning procedures and slow grid connectivity have been seen as drags on UK attractiveness, in addition to uncertainty over future pricing.' The government is still deciding whether to implement a radical overhaul of the UK's wholesale electricity market to introduce regional zones, a move that critics argue will deter investment. The EY analysis covers investment into the electricity, gas, water and waste utilities sectors. A spokesman said there was a particular focus on green energy and renewables, as well as some nuclear-focused investments. Investments ranged from the construction of new solar farms, energy storage and hydrogen facilities, to the establishment of new headquarters, manufacturing operations, maintenance hubs and research and development facilities. • £2bn green hydrogen project on Humberside pulled by US group There were 39 such projects that attracted foreign direct investment into the UK last year — creating 1,452 jobs — down from 93 projects the previous year, which created 4,819 jobs, according to EY's UK Attractiveness Survey. France had 74 such projects, up from 65 in 2023, Germany ranked third and Spain fourth. Across Europe there was a 21 per cent decline in foreign direct investments into the sector year on year.
