New Delhi [India], May 16 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday congratulated the ITBP jawans for their successful expedition to Mount Makalu, the world's fifth highest peak.
In his tweet, Amit Shah said, 'Congratulations to the ITBP jawans on their stellar success in summiting Mount Makalu, the fifth highest peak in the world.'
He added, 'Braving extreme weather conditions, the ITBP personnel unfurled the Tiranga at the peak of the mountain and carried out a cleanliness drive inspired by PM Shri @narendramodi Ji's Swacch Bharat Abhiyan and removed 150 kg of garbage.'
Amit Shah also appreciated the personnel for their courage and commitment.
Meanwhile, in a landmark achievement, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) successfully scaled Mt. Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth highest peak, on April 19, marking the first-ever ascent of the peak by any Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), the force said.
The summit was part of ITBP's historic International Mountaineering Expedition to Mt. Makalu and Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m), flagged off from ITBP Headquarters in New Delhi on March 21. This dual-peak mission, a first in the force's history, showcased ITBP's enduring legacy in high-altitude operations
Led by Deputy Commandant Anoop Kumar Negi, with Deputy Commandant Nihas Suresh as deputy leader, the 12-member expedition team was split into two groups of six. The Makalu group recorded an 83 per cent summit success rate, with five climbers reaching the peak around 08:15 hrs on April 19. The successful summiteers included Assistant Commandant Sanjay Kumar, Head Constable (HC) Sonam Stobdan, HC Pradeep Panwar, HC Bahadur Chand, and Constable Vimal Kumar.
Meanwhile, the Annapurna team battled extreme conditions, including blizzards and whiteouts, reaching an altitude of 7,940 meters--just 150 meters shy of the summit--before retreating safely at 14:45 hrs on the same day.
In line with its 'Clean Himalaya - Save Glacier' campaign, the expedition collected 150 kg of non-biodegradable waste from high-altitude camps, reinforcing ITBP's environmental commitment.
With the successful ascent of Mt. Makalu, the ITBP has now scaled six of the world's 14 eight-thousanders, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Lhotse, and Mt. Manaslu. The force has conquered a total of 229 peaks to date, underscoring its unmatched expertise and resilience in some of the harshest terrains on earth. (ANI)

Varanasi gears up for CZC meeting, final touches underway
1 2 Varanasi: With the Central Zonal Council (CZC) meeting scheduled for June 25, preparations have intensified in Varanasi. Beautification works are nearing completion, particularly along routes that will witness VIP movements beginning Monday evening. That evening, they will offer prayers at the Kaal Bhairav and Kashi Vishwanath temples before proceeding to the meeting venue at Hotel Taj in Nadesar on Tuesday morning. To ensure smooth movement and aesthetic appeal, authorities are focusing on key areas including the stretch from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport to Hotel Taj and the roads leading to both temples. Thematic display boards are being installed along the Varuna bridge, while road dividers are being freshly painted. Work on enhancing street lighting and greenery is also nearing completion, with multiple agencies working in coordination. On the security front, Commissioner Agrawal said a multi-layered deployment plan has been finalised. Security personnel will be stationed at the venue and across the VIP routes. Measures include rooftop surveillance, deployment of officers in plain clothes, drone monitoring, and route diversions. Traffic diversions will remain in effect from Monday evening until the dignitaries' departure on Tuesday. CM Yogi during his visit to the venue on June 16, had reviewed the arrangements and instructed officials to ensure the timely completion of all pending work. With issues from multiple departments expected to be discussed, senior officials from Union ministries and departments of the four participating states have already started arriving in the city.

Air India Express flight to Patna diverted to Varanasi due to bad weather
New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): An Air India Express flight from Delhi to Patna was diverted to Varanasi on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions. An airline spokesperson said that Air India Express flight IX1014 from Delhi (DEL) to Patna (PAT) on 21 June 2025 was diverted to Varanasi (VNS). 'Due to adverse weather conditions, one of our flights to Patna was diverted briefly to Varanasi. When the weather improved, the flight resumed and landed in Patna. We regret the delay caused by circumstances beyond our control,' the spokesperson said. Earlier in the week, on Monday, another Air India Express flight from Delhi to Ranchi had to return to the national capital shortly after takeoff due to a suspected technical issue. The airline said the Boeing 737 Max 8 plane was scheduled to land at Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport at 6:20 PM. After the inspection and clearance, the aircraft continued its normal operations. 'One of our flights returned to Delhi after take-off due to a suspected technical issue. Post inspections and clearance, the aircraft continued scheduled operations. We regret the inconvenience,' the airline spokesperson said. Earlier on Friday, Air India cancelled several international and domestic flights due to increased aircraft checks, bad weather, and airspace restrictions. Affected flights include services between Dubai, Chennai, Delhi, Melbourne, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. According to an Air India's statement, 'Air India's international flights AI906 from Dubai to Chennai; AI308 from Delhi to Melbourne; AI309 from Melbourne to Delhi; AI2204 from Dubai to Hyderabad and domestic flights AI874 from Pune to Delhi; AI456 from Ahmedabad to Delhi; AI-2872 from Hyderabad to Mumbai and AI571 from Chennai to Mumbai have been cancelled due to enhanced maintenance and operational reasons.' The airline has offered full refunds or free rescheduling and is helping passengers with alternate travel plans. 'We regret the inconvenience caused to passengers. Our colleagues on ground are making alternative arrangements for them to fly to their respective destinations at the earliest. Final preparations reviewed for Kailash Mansarovar yatra
Pithoragarh: Pithoragarh district magistrate Vinod Kumar Goswami, on Friday, reviewed the final preparations for the Kailash Mansarovar yatra scheduled to resume on June 30 after a five-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Army, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) – the nodal agency for the yatra. To facilitate the journey, KMVN has arranged 13 buses, with two reserved as backup. The DM instructed the health department to establish base hospital facilities at Gunji and directed BRO to deploy earth movers at landslide-prone areas to ensure smooth vehicle movement, with road condition bulletins to be issued twice daily. He also instructed the establishment of a robust communication system for pilgrims and support staff. "The 23-day pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar will be conducted by road via Lipulekh pass. This year, only five batches – each comprising 50 pilgrims – will undertake the yatra. Pilgrims will also have the opportunity to visit Adi Kailash, Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave Temple, and Jageswar Dham," said DM Goswami. Officials said the first batch will assemble in Delhi on June 30 to complete visa, fee, and medical formalities. The group will then proceed to Tanakpur on July 4, from where ITBP will escort them to Lipulekh. The last batch will depart on Aug 4, with the yatra concluding on Aug 26.
