'Cyberpunk 2077' On MacBook Pro M4 Max Shown At Apple WWDC On Ultra Settings At 120fps
Apple has shown off the gaming prowess of the MacBook Pro M4 Max at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, by providing a first look at CD Projekt RED's RPG Cyberpunk 2077 running on the system with ultra settings, and at 120fps. @geekculture At WWDC 2025, Apple and CD Projekt RED showed off Cyberpunk 2077 running natively on the MacBook Pro M4 Max! CD Projekt RED's Paweł Sasko takes us through how the team used Apple's suite of technologies to run the game on Ultra at a smooth 120fps. #Apple #WWDC2025 #MacBookProM4Max #CDProjektRED #CyberPunk2077 ♬ original sound – Geek Culture
Featuring a snippet of live gameplay taken while exploring Dogtown's EBM Petrochem Stadium in the game's Phantom Liberty expansion, CD Projekt RED provided a sneak peek into some of the technologies used to achieve its performance milestone on Apple's platform. The complete Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which includes the base game, the Phantom Liberty expansion, Update 2.0 with all its content, as well as any free DLCs, is slated to go on sale on the Mac App Store, GOG.com, Steam and Epic Games Store.
According to the developers, the game is able to hit such high framerates at ultra settings due to two factors: Apple's MetalFX upscaler integration and optimisation of the game's REDengine framework. 'When it comes to the REDengine, it's a very scalable technology, and we always try to squeeze out as much performance as we can, no matter the platform, be it Apple devices, the Nintendo Switch or PC and consoles,' explained Paweł Sasko, Associate Game Director at CD Projekt RED.
To achieve maximum performance, the CD Projekt team worked closely with Apple on the utilisation of its MetalFX upscaling to deliver higher definition images from a lower definition source, and MetalFX frame interpolation, which generates in-between frames for smoother, more fluid motion. Additionally, optimisation methods were implemented like FP16, or 16-bit Floating Point, which uses 16 bits instead of 32 bits to relieve the load on the system's CPU, pushing out more performance with minimal detriment to image quality.
Today my chooms at Apple Park we're showing Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition to international press and content creators — running on a MacBook Pro with the M4 Max chip, hitting 120 FPS on Ultra settings. Coming in 2025! 🥰🍎 pic.twitter.com/sNUM5qBby1 — Paweł Sasko (@PaweSasko) June 10, 2025
The brief section of gameplay did highlight some impressive shaders on display, courtesy of Apple's Metal shader converter, providing not only crisp visuals but also realistic interactions between projected lights and objects in the environment. In a 12-minute demo, Sasko used a controller to navigate the game, previewed interactions with in-game characters, including the cameo appearances by the developer's co-founders, Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński, character movements and more importantly, the lighting and shadows generated within the game, to make the sharp visuals and complex colours stand out.
Framerate-wise, the game seemed smooth for the most part, apart from noticeable dips in certain sections when panning the camera. It's also to be noted that the team claimed that the game was able to hit 120fps in that particular scene, so it remains to be seen if the game can maintain those figures in more complex scenes like combat, or open world traversal when Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition launches on the Mac App Store sometime in 2025.

Nintendo Switch 2 Faces Dire Third-Party Game Sales Despite Successful Launch
Despite enjoying a massive launch, the Nintendo Switch 2 is reportedly suffering from rather lukewarm sales of third-party games, as most players flock towards first-party Nintendo titles like Mario Kart World . This news comes from TheGameBusiness' Chris Dring, who went through the console's latest game sales figures surrounding its launch. Citing data from research companies Circana and NielsenIQ, Dring notes that 48% of physical game sales in the UK and 62% of sales in the US were first-party titles, when excluding the console's Mario Kart World bundle. If the bundle was taken into account, however, the figure would be further increased to 86% in the UK, although statistics for the US were not presented. Mario Kart World For context, the Nintendo Switch 2 launched with only three new physical first-party titles: Mario Kart World , and the two enhanced editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom . On the other hand, there were a total of 13 physical third-party games, including CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 , Konami's Survival Kids , and Square Enix's Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster . Speaking to TheGameBusiness, one unnamed third-party publisher noted dire sales figures for its Switch 2 launch sales, stating that it was 'below our lowest estimates'. Dring also noted that despite the newest console's figures being an improvement compared to its predecessor's launch, which saw 89% of physical sales at the time being from first-party games, most third-party Switch 2 games 'posted very low numbers'. As to the reason for such disappointing numbers, Dring suggested that this could be due to the console's enhanced backwards compatibility, leading to players jumping back into the original Switch's back catalogue, coupled with the fact that almost all of the third-party Switch 2 launch titles are ports of already released games, meaning they are likely titles already played and completed by players on other platforms. Survival Kids Despite this report, some sources are actually painting a different picture. US sales tracker Mat Piscatella, who works at Circana, for example, took to Bluesky to state that third-party sales of Nintendo Switch 2 games in the US were actually 'far better' than those of the original console when it launched. CD Projekt Red also shared the sentiment, reporting that Cyberpunk 2077 was the 'best-selling third-party game during the launch of Switch 2', and that the game did 'reasonable numbers'. Amidst the conflicting reports, Dring adds that he was told by many major publishers that Nintendo is 'actively trying to push third-party games this time around', with the hopes that sales will pick up in the coming months once other notable third-party titles like EA Sports Madden 26 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 are released. For Nintendo's first-party titles, the console has some big-hitters in its pipeline, including Donkey Kong Bananza , Pokémon Legends: Z-A and enhanced editions of Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Mario Party Jamboree . Apple Games: 5 Things To Know About The Gaming App
Its legacy with games might be spotty, but no one can blame Apple for trying, as the company has announced Apple Games, a new app streamlined specifically for all the video games you've ever played on Apple's family of hardware, from iPhones to MacBooks. It's landing on iPhone, iPad and macOS later this year, alongside the debut of Apple's upcoming updated operating system, iOS 26, iPad OS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26. Once released, the Apple Games app will be pre-installed on all new Apple devices, represented by a red icon featuring a rocket ship in flight, and provide a unified library for gamers across the Apple ecosystem. This makes it easier for players to keep tabs on all their games in one convenient place, or to see what's happening in their games across all devices. Source: Tom's Guide It's to be noted that the introduction of the Apple Games app will not render the current Game Center obsolete, and instead serve as an evolution of Game Center, which was previously used to provide social features such as leaderboards to mobile gamers. From competing with friends and family, to keeping tabs on your friends' high score, and discovering the new games that they seem to enjoy playing, here are 5 things you need to know about the Apple Games app: Upon launching the Apple Games app, users will be greeted by its Home tab, which gives a detailed overview of all a user's gaming library at a glance, collating data and allowing players to see all the games they have ever downloaded from the App Store via a Library tab, including downloads across iPhone, iPad and Mac devices. At the top of the page, a rotating carousel will feature editorial collections to help players find new games and recommend the latest Apple titles in store. Below that, a Continue Playing section lists all of the user's downloaded games organised based on which title was last played, allowing easy access to a player's favourite title and allowing them to quickly get back in the game. Even if you're on an iPhone and that copy of Civilization VII is for your iMac, Apple Games will reflect that, and you can tell which of your friends also dabble in global domination. Additional sections of the Home tab feature what games a user's Game Center friends are playing, including Top Played Games based on App Store rankings, and curated recommendations which suggest similar titles to the games a user has played. Users will be able to sort their list of games either alphabetically or based on the most recent title played, with additional filters available that let users list only installed games, those that work with controllers and Apple Arcade titles. Additionally, the Library screen also features an Updates and Events button, where users can keep track of any relevant events for their owned games, like upcoming seasonal content or competitive tournaments, while the Achievements button lists the various Game Center achievements users have racked up over the years across all titles. Within the app's Play Together feature, users can now keep track of their friends' gaming activities by integrating features on the Game Center app, listing out all their friends and created groups in one place to easily enjoy games together. Apart from listing out their shared gaming history, users can also compare game achievements or send game invite links or party codes right from the app without the need for external software, making the process of multiplayer gaming more streamlined. The Games app also features challenges — a new way to spark friendly competition through score-based contests. Developers with Game Center leaderboards can create tailored challenges for smaller groups of friends, transforming solo gameplay into a shared experience with friends, allowing for more ways to rally a group, crown a winner, and have a rematch. Players can invite friends to challenges by selecting their friends or contacts. The Apple Games app will also serve as a hub for Apple's gaming subscription service, Apple Arcade, with a dedicated tab for the feature. Functioning similarly to the Home tab, users will be able to subscribe to the service, discover new titles to play, or launch their Apple Arcade games directly, all from one convenient location. The Apple Games app also adds a handy Game Overlay feature for iPad and Mac, which will show over the top of games when pulled out. This tool allows users to quickly adjust system settings on the fly, like audio and screen brightness, manage Bluetooth devices like controllers, switch on Low Power mode to extend gaming sessions and maximise battery life, or turn on Game Mode for enhanced system performance, all without leaving the full-screen app. Additionally, players will also have access to a social tab within the Game Overlay, giving quick access to the Game Center and their friends list, making it easy to start a chat even while gaming. This feature supports both portrait and landscape modes, with navigation possible using a controller. 5 Useful iPadOS 26 Features That Transform Apple's Tablet Into A Mini Computer
Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC for short, has come and gone, with the 2025 iteration shifting its focus to one of the key foundations that power product experiences – user interface (UI) design. The company's Liquid Glass update, its first major visual overhaul in 10 years, continues in the same vein of sleek minimalism, eschewing the old frosted glass look for a see-through, more fluid look for app widgets, menus, buttons, and the like. Hailing from a blend of different influences, from the operating system (OS) in the Vision Pro headset to real-time Gaussian blurring in iOS 7, the new design language is set to roll out across all Apple devices, including the iPad, iMac, iPhone, and more. The change isn't purely for aesthetic reasons, however, as Liquid Glass also forms the basis for unifying its entire OS under a new numbering convention based on the year after their debut: iOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, and iPadOS 26, alongside macOS Tahoe, the only outlier of the lot. To that end, the lineup of software brings new capabilities and quality-of-life improvements – some shared, and others, platform-exclusive – into the mix. Here are five iPadOS 26 features that blur the line between tablet and laptop, turning the former into a mini computer (of sorts). Say goodbye to Split View and Slide Over, as Apple presents a revamped, more intuitive windowing system for multitasking. Where the process is currently confined to toggling between two open windows at once, iPadOS 26 allows users to view all their open windows simultaneously, switch to the one they need, and place them anywhere on the screen, or arrange and resize them with the flick of a finger, making it possible to run tasks side-by-side, or several at a time in the same window. Apps that were previously resized will also open in the exact size and position as before, while tiling locks a window screen to the left or right side of the display. For those who favour grouping their windows into distinct stages, iPadOS 26 is compatible with Stage Manager and supports external displays on the side. Managing files and navigating menus is easier than ever with iPadOS 26. An updated List view, taking after its Mac counterpart, displays more details about a document in resizable columns and collapsible folders, and folders can be pinned or dragged from Files to the dock. Customisation options, such as custom colours and icons, will make them more easily identifiable, with users able to choose default apps for specific file types. Separately, the addition of Mac's menu bar simplifies the process of locating specific commands or features within an app or window through tabs like File, Edit, View, Format, and more. Specific to developers, the menu bar in their own apps can be customised as well. Previously only available on iOS, the Journal app unlocks the ability to track day-to-day activities and experiences with images, videos, and audio recordings on the iPad. Drawings and handwriting can be incorporated through Apple Pencil or touch, which is a natural fit for the tablet's larger canvas. Apart from greater viewing comfort, the extra screen real estate should evoke a feel that aligns closer to traditional hand-to-paper journaling – a welcome invitation for illustrators and writers who prefer to do things the old-fashioned way. Additionally, users can keep multiple journals for various aspects of life, with access to a map view that sorts entries by location. iPadOS 26 offers a dedicated app for editing and viewing PDFs in the form of Preview, where documents and images can be marked up via Apple Pencil or touch, eliminating the need for third-party software. Alongside AutoFill, used to quickly fill out forms, the iPad will make it possible to create an empty page or pull up saved files directly from the Files app. Here's one for the content creators, podcasters, video editors, and multimedia professionals. With iPadOS 26 comes an audio input selector, allowing different microphones to be selected for each app and individual websites, and better audio clarity, enhanced through Voice Isolation that blocks ambient noise. Local Capture, meanwhile, touts high-quality recordings with any video conferencing app. Powered by echo cancellation, it keeps the user's voice front and centre, and enables the sharing of both audio and video files once the call is over. The first iPadOS 26 developer beta is now live, with public betas following in July. The final version is slated to launch this fall, likely after the next big iPhone reveal event, which typically takes place in September. When it eventually arrives, iPadOS 26 will be available on the following models: iPad Pro (M4) 11' iPad Pro (1st gen and later) 12.9' iPad Pro (3rd gen and later) iPad Air (M2 and later) iPad Air (3rd gen and later) iPad (A16, 8th gen and later) iPad Mini (A17 Pro, 5th gen and later) The iPad may still fall short of the utility that a MacBook brings, but the software update promises added versatility that pushes productivity to greater heights. Between that and inherited accompaniments like Apple Intelligence and Continuity features, tablet multitasking is inching closer to becoming a total game-changer.
