
Wide choice and monitoring from Nokian Heavy Tyres
The majority of tractor tyres are much like the majority of tractors themselves, built primarily as ploughing machines to answer the most basic demand in growing crops – turning the soil.
Yet, just as some manufacturers build tractors to better fulfil other duties, such as transport, Nokian Tyres of Finland make a range of tyres that suit a wide variety of niche applications in addition to general purpose farm use.

The company's Heavy Tyres division serves many demanding applications, including mines and dockside cranes, with farming and forestry growing in importance as it extends its range further into the land industries.
However, there is a good deal of stiff competition out there so, to differentiate itself from the crowd, Nokian sets out its stall as appealing to farming and contractors with a premium product for high-powered tractors and forestry equipment.
A tyre type for all situations
Naturally, a traditional-type tractor tyre with the usual deep-angled lugs features in their range, but there are also block tread tyres, flotation tyres, winter tyres, and hybrid types in between these more focussed items.
Tyres for forestry applications are prominent in the range with puncture resistance and lateral grip being two of the major requirements for working in this environment.

There are those suitable for timber harvesters, with different types again for forwarders while other products are designed specifically to work with tracks and chains.
When it comes to farming, the company is strongly promoting its Soil King VF tyre, which is currently available in 11 sizes with more fittings planned.
At a recent demonstration in Finland, there was the opportunity to compare the Soil King VF performance around the company's test track near its factory at Nokia against a more road-orientated tyre.
The cavalry connection
This was no true test of an agricultural product, but as many larger tractors spend a good deal of time undertaking transport tasks, it still remains a valid window into their performance under one particular set of circumstances.
The tyre the Soil King VF was up against was the company's Hakkapelliita TRI which – described as a block-patterned tyre for built environments – is hardly what one might expect to find on a farm tractor.

However, they are available in 26 different sizes for tractors and eight different sizes for wheeled loaders, so there is certainly a market for them in the Nordic countries and beyond.
To a tongue brought up to speak English, Hakkapeliitta is something of a mouthful, but it is the original brand name for Nokian's winter tyre range, whether car or heavy duty.
The name refers to a light cavalryman of the 17th century. The horses bred to accompany the soldiers were strong and durable with their descendants – known as the Finnish Universal – being considered suitable for both draught work and riding.
Mixed fleet
Three tractors were available on the day – a small fleet which, unsurprisingly, featured a fellow Finn in the shape of a Valtra S415 fitted with a Central Tyre Inflation System.

This optional extra illustrated the flexibility of the Soil King VFs, as they could be reduced to 0.5 bar and still stay on the rim under load, with a much enlarged footprint to spread the weight and improve traction.
Yet driving at any speed above a good trot at these low pressures was an unnerving experience for handling was, at best, imprecise, and over-heating of the tyre wall could result in damage to its structure.

With a more realistic 1.8 bar set, driving on tarmac became a far more sensible proposition and steering was quite responsive – yet it was not perfect with the tractor carrying an extra 1,500kg in rear wheel weights.
Block tread stability
Switching over to a John Deere 6R 185, fitted with the aforementioned Hakkapellita TRI rubber, road manners were considerably improved and the tractor would drive as well as any light truck if it had the equivalent suspension.
The question then arises as to where such a tyre might fit into Irish agriculture?
The softer winter compound is unlikely to be required, yet a harder wearing version – the TR2 – with a similar tread pattern and design ethos is also available for all-season use.
Nokian tyres are already offered as an option on JCB Fastracs
Obviously there might be demand from operators of JCB Fastracs, which spend a lot of time on the roads with occasional forays into the field. In these cases, such a tyre would be ideal and JCB already offer it as an option on the 4000 series.
Hedge-cutting contractors are another outlet, and the tyres are already being used for this purpose in the UK where it is not just the road manners and wear characteristics which are appreciated, but also the minimisation of marks and imprints in softer ground and kempt verges.
Tyre pressure monitors
Nokian are also at the forefront of real-time tyre monitoring with its Intuitu smart tyres system.
Two parameters are measured by a device stuck to the inside of the tyre: the first is pressure;and the second is temperature. The readings are transferred to a phone app by Bluetooth.

While pressure is the most important feature of tyre use – affecting, as it does, efficiency, safety and overall performance – the temperature can be the first sign of things going wrong.
This is not confined to a loss of pressure but can also be a result of tyre damage or incorrect alignment and is therefore a good indication of tyre health.

Intuitu is available on all tractor products, enabling pressures to be checked regularly from a smartphone, removing the guesswork of visual inspection and highlighting problems at an earlier stage. It costs around €100 per tyre.

Glenn Irwin involved in practice crash
Northern Ireland rider has slipped down the championship standings as a consequence Glenn Irwin was taken to hospital for assessment Glenn Irwin's hopes of winning the British Superbike title suffered a blow yesterday after the Northern Ireland rider was ruled out of the opening race at round three following a crash at Snetterton. Irwin was high-sided from his Hager PBM Ducati machine during the final free practice session in the morning. The 35-year-old was taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for assessment after initial checks at the circuit medical centre did not show any obvious damage. A statement issued by the organisers said: 'Glenn Irwin was taken to the circuit medical centre after a crash in Free Practice 3 (FP3). 'Following x-rays on his hip and right leg at the circuit medical centre where nothing was visible, he has been taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for further scans and is unfit for Qualifying. 'Further updates will follow when available.' Should Irwin be passed fit to race in today's two BSB races, he would have to start from the back of the grid. John Mowatt, PBM Ducati team coordinator, said: 'It was unfortunate. In the 10-minute FP3 session we had set a fairly quick lap on the first flyer and then we were bedding ourselves into it. Unfortunately, he's high-sided at turn 9 on the right-hand side. 'He took a bit of a heavy impact to the right-hand side of his body.' Irwin has now dropped from second in the championship to fourth after missing the first race of the weekend and is 30 points behind former champion Bradley Ray (Raceways Yamaha), who dominated yesterday's opener. That decision from INEOS bigwig Ratcliffe saw the Scot wave goodbye to a whopping £2.1million a year salary. But the 83-year-old won't be strapped for cash thanks to a business venture he embarked upon over FOUR DECADES ago. Fergie 's personal company, ACF Sports Promotions Limited, recorded profits of £2.7m last year, taking its total assets to £26.9m. ACF is the company that handles all of Fergie 's commercial activities, including speaking appearances. When to sell, when to buy, when to change and ultimately when to go, Fergie has always been in a class of his own. Over the years there were countless decisions which had everyone scratching their head — but Sir Alex always knew the time was right. Some were more obvious than others. Like the night Manchester United won the Treble on the back of his substitutions. Others less so, like the summer of 1995 when terrace legends Mark Hughes, Paul Ince and Andrei Kanchelskis were sold at the peak of their powers. The whole of football thought the manager had lost his marbles. But Fergie knew better, as he chose that year to unleash his 'you win nothing with kids' Double heroes. Just as he knew best when it came to right-hand men. Brian Kidd, Steve McClaren, Archie Knox and Co — an endless list of world-class coaches who all came and went. And, of course, the biggest decision of all. Calling time on 26 years in which he had gone from the brink of the bullet to English football's greatest-ever gaffer. The majority of people are convinced Ferguson stepped down because he knew United's era of dominance was over. Maybe not the nosedive to come but certainly that an almighty rebuild was just around the corner. Another mass overhaul, yet not one he was prepared to oversee. Now another end has arrived. Not as dramatic or as out-of-nowhere, admittedly, but an end nonetheless. Next summer Fergie will leave his 12-year role as global ambassador. Many see it as the most ruthless swing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's cost-cutting axe — and they are wrong. For while he is trying to save every penny in making United great again — how's that going, Sir Jim? — Ferguson has not suddenly and callously been told he is surplus to requirements. This decision was a two-way call. An amicable parting. Football's own conscious uncoupling, in Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow lingo. And not, incidentally, a departure which means we will no longer see Fergie at Old Trafford on a matchday. That simply will not happen. He will still be there rain, wind or shine . . . Only now as a high-profile non-executive director, rather than a man with the ear — and the sway — behind the owners' biggest decisions. Like he was when urging United to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo in 2021. Admittedly not his finest hour, rather an indication of the influence he still retained. Back then, until just before Ratcliffe and his Ineos team arrived, in fact, Ferguson had the owners' ear. Almost a hotline to the Glazer family, you could say. And those days are done. Not that Sir Alex is bereft at the thought. For a start, some of the staff sackings have enraged the Scot — long-serving photographer John Peters and kitman Alec Wylie, for example. This is not a cosy-cosy relationship with Ratcliffe being severed. If anything, it is closer to the opposite. And as Fergie the Red, in every sense The Boss — those who played under him still call him that — knows, trousering £2million or so a year in such tight times is not a good look. Fair enough, not an amount anyone would turn down in normal circumstances. Yet when many in the steerage class are losing their livelihoods, it is not something that would have sat well with him. There is also the practical side of things as well. At the end of December, Sir Alex will be 83 years old, albeit still a freakishly fit 83 years old. Yet even though the grey matter remains oh-so-sharp and the mind clear as a bell, the bones grow creakier and even Superman had to put his feet up on occasion. That does not mean you will not see shots of Fergie alongside Ratcliffe at various points — Sir Jim loves too much the associated glamour of being pictured with the greatest. But any idea of Sir Alex having an emperor's thumbs-down power has gone for good — and quite frankly that is something which suits both sides. Fergie was given the role after bringing his legendary 26-and-a-half-year reign at Old Trafford to an end in 2013. He was paid just shy of £26m for his post-managerial gig, which Ratcliffe and Co. deemed to be an unnecessary expense. "If we hadn't have implemented the cost programmes and restructuring that we have done over the last 12 months. "So we have to deal with all those things, and there's only so many things you can deal with at once. "We have a new management team, we have to deal with the financial restructure, then we have to move on to the squad, data analysis, and moving forward. "But we are in the process of change and it's an uncomfortable period and disruptive and I do feel sympathy with the fans. "But I am not actually surprised where we are in the league because Ruben's only got a certain size of squad he can deal with, and quite a number of those players are injured or not available to him."
