Top surfers gear up for 6th Indian Open of Surfing in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: The surfing spotlight returns to Karnataka's coastal city of Mangaluru as the sixth edition of the Indian Open of Surfing is set to get underway at the Tannirbhavi Eco Beach on Friday.
Scheduled from May 30 to June 1, this is the second stop of the 2025 National Surfing Championship Series. Organised by the Surfing Swami Foundation and hosted by the Mantra Surf Club under the aegis of the Surfing Federation of India (SFI), this year's edition continues to serve as a pivotal leg in the National Championship series, drawing India's finest surfing talent for three days of high-stakes competition and valuable ranking points.
Originally scheduled at Sasihithlu Beach, this year's competition has been relocated to Tannirbhavi Eco Beach due to unfavourable weather and wave patterns at the former site. While Sasihithlu has been synonymous with the Indian Open of Surfing for years, the new venue promises comparable wave quality while ensuring better safety conditions for surfers and spectators alike.
The three-day contest will see over 50 top surfers compete across four divisions: Men's Open, Women's Open, Groms (U-16) Boys, and Groms (U-16) Girls. Among the biggest highlights for this round is the return of defending National champion Ramesh Budihal and Kishore Kumar, two of India's top-ranked surfers who missed the previous edition but are now ready to make a statement.
They will join an elite lineup including Harish Muthu, Kamali P., Ajeesh Ali, Srikanth D., and Sanjay Selvamani, all of whom have impressed on the Asian circuit in 2024, including standout performances at the Asian Surfing Championship and the Maruhaba Cup. Their performances were key to India securing a 5th place rank in Asia last year and also securing two quotas for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
Adding a dramatic layer to this year's edition is the surf forecast, with wave heights predicted between 10 to 12 feet across the competition dates. Due to cyclonic activity and unpredictable weather patterns over the Arabian Sea, the ocean may prove to be an unpredictable competitor and play a spoilsport to the event schedule.
The heightened challenge will also have implications for national rankings, especially with the Asian Surf Championship 2025, a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Games, on the horizon.
The event continues to enjoy unwavering backing from key partners. The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) returns as the Title Sponsor for the second consecutive year, while Karnataka Tourism presents the championship for the sixth year running.
'We're excited to bring the sixth edition of the NMPA Indian Open of Surfing to the coast of Mangalore. With a strong field of athletes and a challenging forecast of 10–12 ft waves, we are in for an intense and exciting three days of competition," said Rammohan Paranjape, vice president of the Surfing Federation of India and director at Mantra Surf Club.
In the lead-up to the sixth edition of IOS, local Grom events have been underway, aiming to unearth the next wave of surfing talent in the region. These grassroots competitions not only build momentum ahead of the national championship but also set the stage for a sustainable pipeline of talent.

Bumrah Backs Indian Fielders, Says 'Nobody Is Dropping Catches Purposely'
Last Updated: Indian players dropped at least half a dozen catches in England's first innings, and the hosts batters made the most of the reprieves. Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has come out in support of Indian players after they faced sharp criticism from fans and experts of the game for their poor performance on the field during England's first innings. Indian players dropped at least half a dozen catches on Saturday and Sunday combined to give multiple chances to England batters, and they made India pay as well for that. When asked about India's poor fielding in the ongoing first Test against England at Headingley, Bumrah, during the post-day conference, said that no player is dropping the catches purposely. 'Nobody is dropping catches purposely—it's part & parcel of the game. People will learn from this experience," Bumrah said. Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped at least three catches in the first innings for India, and Ravindra Jadeja also dropped a simple catch to give Ben Duckett. Bumrah on fire Bumrah picked up five wickets for India in the first innings of the Leeds Test. He finished with figures of 5 for 83 in 24.4 overs, and his fifer in the first innings helped him break multiple bowling records. He became the first Asian bowler to take 150 Test wickets in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries and also equalled R. Ashwin's record of most five-wicket hauls in the WTC. Ashwin played 41 WTC matches for India and picked up 11 fifers, whereas Bumrah has 11 five-wicket hauls to his name in just 36 matches. In addition, Bumrah also became the first Indian bowler to take three five-wicket hauls in England, and he also equalled Kapil Dev's record of 12 five-wicket hauls for India in Test matches played away from home. For India, apart from Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna picked up three wickets on Sunday, and two English batters were sent back to the pavilion by Mohammed Siraj. Ollie Pope top-scored for England in the first innings, and Harry Brook slammed 99 runs from 112 balls. The right-handed batter was unlucky to miss out on a deserving hundred. He became only the second English batter after Marcus Trescothick to get out on 99 in Test cricket against India. First Published: June 22, 2025, 23:33 IST

Bumrah continues SENA supremacy with another set of records, levels with Kapil Dev
Leeds [UK], June 22 (ANI): Another day, another record for Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as he became the first Asian player ever to have 150 wickets in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia (SENA) nations. He achieved this milestone during the first Test against England at Leed's. In an almost lone-warrior effort, Bumrah took 5/83 in 24.4 overs, with an economy rate of 3.36. This is Bumrah's 10 five-wicket haul in SENA nations, becoming the first-ever Indian to touch this figure. Two more five-wicket hauls will take him above Pakistan legend Wasim Akram (11 SENA fifers). This is also 12th five-wicket haul for Bumrah in away Tests, equalling that of former Indian skipper Kapil Dev. He tops this list because of his lower Test match count (34) as compared to Kapil (66). Notably, Bumrah has four five-wicket hauls in Australia, three in England, three each in England and South Africa and two in the West Indies. Only two of his five-wicket hauls have come in India. Notably, England started the second session at 327/5, with Harry Brook (57*) and Jamie Smith (29*) unbeaten. Brook continued his counter-attack, while Smith (40 in 52 balls, with five fours and a six), Chris Woakes (38 in 55 balls, with three fours and two sixes) and Brydon Carse (22 in 23 balls, with four boundaries) also piled up useful scores. Brook missed out on his century, scoring 99 in 112 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes. Bumrah (5/83) and Prasidh Krishna (3/128) were the top bowlers as England was bowled out for 465 in response to India's first innings 471 runs, trailing by six runs. A century by Ollie Pope (106 in 137 balls, with 14 fours) and fifty from Ben Duckett (62 in 94 balls, with nine fours) on day two, served as valuable contributions as well. England, on day one, won the toss and opted to bowl first. Centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 in 159 balls, with 16 fours), skipper Shubman Gill (147 in 227 balls, with 19 fours and a six) and Rishabh Pant (134 in 178 balls, with 12 fours and six sixes) took India to 471. 430/4 at one point, skipper Ben Stokes (4/66) and Josh Tongue (4/86) caused a collapse.
