The best ever? Ohio State recruit Christian Teresi and Marist make case with state championship. ‘It's awesome.'
Marist's Christian Teresi wasn't going to argue with his coach.
Jordan Vidovic proclaimed that the RedHawks are the best team in Illinois to ever play the sport. After they won their second straight state title, the Ohio State-bound Teresi quickly agreed.
'Of course I want to stay humble,' Teresi said. 'But I'm going to agree with him 100% on that. We went to California and beat the No. 1 team in the nation (Mira Costa).
'I feel like that was a big accomplishment for an Illinois high school. And now we won the state championship again. It's awesome.'
Teresi continued his role as an awesome do-it-all player Saturday.
The senior setter/right-side hitter produced 14 kills on a .619 hitting percentage to lead Marist to a 25-20, 25-20 victory over Glenbard West in the boys volleyball state championship match at Hoffman Estates.
While Teresi added 15 assist and seven digs for the RedHawks (40-2), MIT recruit Nathen Toth tallied 11 kills, Jacob Finley notched 18 assists and Rorey Donnelly delivered 11 digs.
Charlie Clifford led the Hilltoppers (36-6) with eight kills in a match that featured 21 ties and four lead changes. But the several times Marist needed a big play, Teresi usually provided it.
'I was telling Jacob, our setter, to keep setting me because they were not stopping me at all,' Teresi said. 'I was just going on a roll and I wanted to keep getting set.
'These are the games where I really want to stand out. There are a lot of people watching. I know we played Glenbard twice during the season, but we knew coming into this game, this was going to be a brand-new team.'
It's the second straight state title in boys volleyball, third overall for the boys and third straight for Vidovic, who won in 2024 with the boys in the spring and then the girls team in the fall.
Earlier in the day, Marist beat Lane Tech 25-15, 25-19 in the semifinals.
Toth totaled six kills and five aces to lead the RedHawks, while Teresi chipped in with four kills and eight assists. Finley recorded eight assists and Donnelly had seven digs against Lane (35-7).
Marist then put an exclamation point on a season in which the RedHawks went 30-0 against Illinois teams and dropped just one set — Friday against Lake Park in the state quarterfinals.
That had Vidovic excited about placing this team at the top of the state's history list.
'There is no doubt in my mind because we went out and did it,' he said. 'Everybody else is hypothetical and we went out and played the best of the best. We went toe-to-toe with the most stacked high school volleyball teams … probably ever.
'I've been around some great Illinois teams as a player, as a spectator, as a sibling, as a coach, and I've seen some phenomenal teams, but the way the game is played right now, the speed and the way the ball is travelling, there was nothing like that back then.'
Teresi closed a four-year varsity career with one more big match under his belt as a goodbye.
'I've never seen a player as compete as Christian — not at all,' Toth said. 'He can do everything. He's super athletic. He's got a wicked arm swing. I really don't know what this kid can't do.
'I don't know how you can go up there on the block and stop him.'
About the only thing Saturday night that could almost stop Teresi was a question about if this year's title felt better than a year ago. It was almost like asking a parent who the favorite child is.
'I don't know … I think this year was more exciting for our team,' Teresi said. 'Well, actually I think last year was more exciting because it was our first one.
'But this was better because of us winning last year.'

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman discusses what went wrong vs. Ohio State with Joel Klatt
We all remember it all too well after the Ohio State football team went on a historic run through the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff to win the national championship last season. It was one for the ages, one in which the Buckeyes beat No. 9 Tennessee, No. 1 Oregon, No. 5 Texas, and then No. 7 Notre Dame to unleash the confetti, trophies, and celebrations. However, for every victor, there is a loser, and in the case of Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach and former Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman, the loss to the Buckeyes still stings. Freeman sat down with Fox's Joel Klatt for a wide-ranging interview, and it wouldn't have been complete without re-visiting what happened in Atlanta between the Scarlet and Gray and "Golden Domers." Klatt asked Freeman to go back and think about what he learned from a game in which Ohio State jetted out to a big lead, saw the Irish battle back to within eight points in the fourth quarter, only to see the Buckeyes make plays down the stretch to win rather comfortably. For Freeman, he wishes his team could have played a little better, all while still giving credit to Ohio State. 'I think in those biggest games, those biggest moments, you've got to play your best. You can't make mistakes -- not against a team like Ohio State,' Freeman said. 'You think about the first drive on offense, I think it was a 19-play drive, we execute, we're physical, we go down, we score. Defensively, we didn't play our best, and trust me, credit to Ohio State. They had some elite playmakers. They played really, really well.' As an ultra competitor, you never want to believe a team is better than you, or created some of the mishaps and uncharacteristic play, and that's exactly how Freeman felt. "I wish we could go back and, dang it, we got to play our best, and the outcome might still be the same, but there were moments in that game I thought that's not how we have played all year long,' Freeman said. 'For me, I think about that game and I say, OK, listen, we fought to the very end, right? You're down 21, I think, at half – or something like that, 14 or 21, and it was an eight-point game in the fourth quarter." As for what Freeman learned, he said that he began dissecting that almost immediately and has already made some changes and filed some things away that he would do differently if presented with the opportunity again. 'And it's something I will always remember, we made some changes already after we debriefed from that game. And hey, if we're in that situation, here are some different things we'll do as we prepare for it," Freeman said. "But at the end of the day, you've got to play your best when you're playing the best." Look, there are good coaches and good guys in this game, and I'm not sure many are better than Freeman. He has the Irish on the upswing, and I for one won't be surprised if he does indeed get another shot at the ultimate prize in college football, and he might just bring the thing home next time. I just hope it isn't against his alma mater once again. Ohio State men's hockey releases 2025-2026 nonconference schedule
The Ohio State men's hockey team surprised a lot of people with their unexpectedly high level of play this past season. The Buckeyes lost a lot of key players but found a way to plug in more talent and shock a lot of people by making it to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game en route to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Things didn't end all that well on the national scale in the postseason, but it was still an overachieving year in which OSU went 24-12-2 overall and finished third in the League with a 14-9-1 record. It was a fun season, one that it hopes it can build momentum off of and take it into this upcoming season. And while we won't know the Big Ten schedule until a future date, the program did announce its nonconference schedule this past week, so if you are an ice hockey fan, and one that loves to watch the Scarlet and Gray, you've got something to look forward to. All told, the Buckeyes will host five nonconference games and go on the road for another five.
