Azadi OTT Release: Where to watch Sreenath Bhasi and Vani Vishwanath's Malayalam film online after theatres

Time of India18-05-2025

Azadi OTT Release: Sreenath Bhasi's upcoming Malayalam film may still be gearing up for its big-screen debut on May 23, but fans who prefer streaming from the comfort of home won't have to wait long. The makers have already locked in ManoramaMAX as the OTT platform for the film's digital release.
That's right, unlike many Malayalam films that wait until after the theatrical run to sort out streaming deals, Azadi has managed to tie up its digital rights even before hitting cinemas. This is a rare move in the current Malayalam film industry, where movies usually wait to see how they perform at the box office before landing an OTT partner.
Only a few other titles, like Officer on Duty and Thudarum, managed the same. If trends are anything to go by, Azadi is expected to drop on Manorama Max about four weeks after its theatrical release, so you can likely stream it by late June.
What is Azadi all about?
Azadi is not your everyday drama. This one's a jail thriller unfolding inside a hospital and blending themes of survival, justice, and revenge. The trailer hints at some intense drama where we see veteran actor Lal playing a father on a mission for justice, while Raveena, a renowned voice artist, plays a pregnant prisoner accused of killing a political leader's son in cold blood.
Sreenath Bhasi leads the film with a dark, brooding performance, and actress Vani Viswanath plays a strong, no-nonsense cop, a role that harks back to her iconic performances in films like The King and Black Daliya. The supporting cast also includes Saiju Kurup, Vijayakumar, Mala Parvathi, Gilu Joseph, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, TG Ravi and Rajesh Sharma among others.
Who's behind Azadi?
Azadi is the directorial debut of Jo George, with its screenplay coming from writer Sagar, known for films like Veekam and Sathyam Mathrame Bodhippikku. The project is produced by Faizal Raja under the Little Crew Production banner, with Remis Raja and Resmi Faizal as co-producers. This Varun Unni musical is cinematographed by Saneesh Stanly and edited by Noufal Abdullah.

Jeethu Joseph confirms talks for simultaneous release of ‘Drishyam 3' in Malayalam, Hindi, and Telugu

Director Jeethu Joseph has confirmed that discussions are underway to release Drishyam 3 simultaneously in Malayalam, Hindi, and Telugu. The much-anticipated third installment of the hit thriller franchise, starring Mohanlal, is set to begin filming in October. The update came after Aashirvad Cinemas, the production house backing the film, released a teaser reel featuring a close-up of Georgekutty's eye, echoing an iconic shot from the first Drishyam. The teaser also confirmed that the film will go on floors in October 2025. October 2025 — the camera turns back to Georgekutty. The past never stays silent.# — Aashirvad Cinemas (@aashirvadcine) June 21, 2025 Jeethu Joseph, who returns to direct the third part, addressed speculation surrounding the Hindi adaptation. 'The script of the third film is nearing completion. The Hindi version will be based on the same story. Once my script is complete, it will be shared with the Hindi team to adapt culturally,' he said. While reports suggested parallel shoots for the different versions, Jeethu noted that such a plan remains uncertain. 'The dates of the lead actors may not align for simultaneous shooting,' he explained. Mohanlal will reprise his role in the Malayalam version, while Ajay Devgn and Venkatesh are expected to lead the Hindi and Telugu adaptations, respectively. Still, Jeethu revealed that the idea of a same-day release across languages is under serious consideration. 'There was a request for a simultaneous release,' he said. 'In this OTT age, releasing on different dates might reduce the film's impact in other languages.' The Drishyam franchise has gained a strong following across India. The first film, released in 2013, and its sequel Drishyam 2 (2021), both saw critical and commercial success. While Drishyam 2 premiered directly on Amazon Prime Video due to the pandemic, expectations are high for a theatrical release for the third part. Meanwhile, Mohanlal is riding high after the success of Thudarum, and will next appear in Hridayapoorvam, directed by Sathyan Anthikad.

CBFC Demands Title Change For Suresh Gopi's JSK Over Use Of Goddess Sita's Name

Last Updated: The release of the Malayalam movie JSK-Janaki vs. State of Kerala, starring Suresh Gopi, has been halted by the CBFC due to the use of the name Janaki, a name for Goddess Sita. The release of the Malayalam film JSK – Janaki vs State of Kerala, featuring Union Minister Suresh Gopi and actor Anupama Parameswaran, has reportedly encountered a major hurdle after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) denied screening clearance due to objections over the title. The film, directed by Pravin Narayanan, centers around a woman named Janaki and her legal battle against the state following an assault. Industry insiders have indicated that the CBFC raised concerns over the name 'Janaki', citing its close association with Goddess Sita. The Board reportedly objected to the use of this name for a character portrayed as a victim of assault, suggesting that religious sentiments could be hurt by the portrayal. In a Facebook post on Saturday, director Pravin confirmed the delay, stating that the censor board has refused certification. 'There will be no release on June 27," he wrote, without providing further explanation. Meanwhile, B Unnikrishnan, general secretary of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), addressed the issue publicly on Sunday. He told reporters in Kochi that while the filmmakers have not yet received a formal show-cause notice, they expect one to be delivered by Monday. 'They have not received any written information in this regard. A show-cause notice is yet to be received. They expect to get it by Monday," Unnikrishnan said. He added, 'The CBFC clearly stated to the film's crew that the name Sita cannot be used either in the title or for the character in the movie. The story is about the legal fight carried out by an assaulted woman against the state. It is said (by the Board) that Goddess Sita's name cannot be given to the woman character who suffered assault." Unnikrishnan also pointed out that this is not the first instance of such an objection. He said that another Malayalam filmmaker recently had to change a character's name from Janaki to Jayanthi in order to receive CBFC approval. Calling the situation 'strange," Unnikrishnan questioned the increasing limitations being placed on creative freedom in Indian cinema. 'Where is this country heading?" he asked. 'Filmmakers are even denied the freedom to give the characters in their films the names of their choice." He further noted the growing challenge of naming Hindu characters in cinema, as many common names are often also epithets of deities. As of now, neither Suresh Gopi nor the film's production team has issued an official statement regarding the CBFC's directive or the potential title change. First Published:
