Trump assurance of US support for Aukus to Starmer some consolation for Albanese after meet cancelled

US President Donald Trump (left) and British PM Keir Starmer shake hands as they speak to reporters during the G-7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. PHOTO: AFP – A much-vaunted meeting between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Donald Trump to discuss the future of a three-way security pact that also involves Britain did not take place as planned at the Group of Seven (G-7) Summit in Calgary, after the American leader abruptly left to deal with the Israel-Iran war. Nevertheless, Canberra's concerns about the US commitment to the Aukus pact – which involves the supply of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia at a cost of A$368 billion (S$306.73 billion) – were partially assuaged when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer appeared to secure the backing of the mercurial Mr Trump for the deal. China's Baidu eyes robotaxi expansion to Singapore and Malaysia

[BEIJING] Baidu is planning to launch its Apollo Go robotaxi service in Singapore and Malaysia as early as this year, according to a person familiar with the matter, as the company continues to expand its global footprint. Apollo Go is in discussions with potential partners to explore the right business models for the two markets, said the person, who asked not to be identified discussing private matters. Baidu chief executive officer Robin Li has previously said the company was seeking partners such as mobility service providers, local taxi companies and third-party fleet operators for an asset-light approach. The development comes as Tesla prepares to launch its Cybercab robotaxi network within days, with Elon Musk staking the electric carmaker's future growth on autonomous driving technology. At the same time, Chinese robotaxi companies including Apollo Go, and US-listed Weride and Pony AI are expanding into international markets such as the Middle East, Europe and South-east Asia. Baidu didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Dow Jones Newswires reported the plans earlier. Apollo Go is fast scaling up. It has deployed than 1,000 self-driving vehicles worldwide, most of which are in China. It reached 11 million rides by the first quarter of this year, surpassing Alphabet's autonomous driving unit Waymo's 10 million paid rides as of May 23. The Baidu unit is also exploring entering Europe and Turkey, and was in talks with Swiss Post unit PostAuto to roll out a robotaxi service in Switzerland. BLOOMBERG

BBC threatens legal action against AI startup Perplexity over content scraping

publishers have raised alarms about chatbots that comb the internet to find information and create paragraph summaries for users. PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON – The BBC has threatened legal action against Perplexity, accusing the AI startup of training its 'default AI model' using BBC content, the Financial Times (FT) reported on June 20, making the British broadcaster the latest news organisation to accuse the AI firm of content scraping. The BBC may seek an injunction unless Perplexity stops scraping its content, deletes existing copies used to train its AI systems, and submits 'a proposal for financial compensation' for the alleged misuse of its intellectual property, FT said, citing a letter sent to Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas. The broadcaster confirmed the FT report in a statement to Reuters. Perplexity has faced accusations from media organisations, including Forbes and Wired, for plagiarising their content but has since launched a revenue-sharing programme to address publisher concerns. Last October, the New York Times sent it a 'cease and desist' notice, demanding the firm stop using the newspaper's content for generative AI purposes. Since the introduction of ChatGPT, publishers have raised alarms about chatbots that comb the internet to find information and create paragraph summaries for users. The BBC said parts of its content were reproduced verbatim by Perplexity, and that links to the BBC website have appeared in search results, according to the FT report. Perplexity called the BBC's claims 'manipulative and opportunistic' in a statement to Reuters, adding that the broadcaster has 'a fundamental misunderstanding of technology, the internet and intellectual property law'. Perplexity provides information by searching the internet, similar to ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, and is backed by founder Jeff Bezos, AI giant Nvidia and Japan's SoftBank Group. The startup is in advanced talks to raise US$500 million (S$642 million) in a funding round that would value it at US$14 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported in May.
