Simeone taking things game-by-game with title race out of Atletico's hands
Atletico Madrid can do nothing more than take things game-by-game in the home stretch of the season, hoping to catch up with LaLiga leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid who are both vying for the title, manager Diego Simeone said on Friday.
Atletico were in the running for the title this season and even topped the standings at the halfway mark, but Simeone's side have fallen by the wayside in recent weeks to sit third.
They are 10 points adrift of Barca and six behind second-placed Real Madrid with five games left. Atletico next visit Eduardo Coudet's 17th-placed Deportivo Alaves on Saturday.
"We have to finish game-by-game in the best way. Barcelona and Real Madrid are in an important position to compete with each other and have a direct duel. We'll do our thing," Simeone told reporters.
"We have to think about improving. Alaves have been doing very well in the last few days, with a good rhythm of play, a coach with clear ideas, as in all his teams," he said of his fellow Argentine.
When asked where Atletico fell short this season, Simeone said they should have won "nine or 10 points" in away games.
While Atleti have lost only once at home this season, they have suffered four defeats and five draws on the road.
After a barren run at the start of the year, Alaves have won three and drawn two of their last seven games to climb out of the drop zone.
A physical team under Coudet, who took over from Luis Garcia in December, Alaves are two points clear of Las Palmas in 18th - the final relegation spot.
"They are a brave Alaves side who have needs," Simeone added. "We have them too and we want to take the game to where we think we can do some damage."
With the transfer window set to open soon, Villarreal playmaker Alex Baena has been linked with a move to Atletico but Simeone laughed when asked for his verdict on the player.
"You're taking me for a fool ... If I answer that he plays spectacularly, that I love him, that he's important for the national team, you'll say: "El Cholo (Simeone) wants him," he said.
"If I say he plays badly, you'll say: "El Cholo doesn't like him." He's a great footballer, obviously!" REUTERS

Stade Toulousain through to French Top 14 final
LYON, France - Stade Toulousain kept up their bid for a third successive French Top 14 rugby title as they ended the hopes of outsiders Aviron Bayonnais with a 32-25 victory in their semi-final on Friday. Toulouse, despite missing injured talisman Antoine Dupont and fellow French international Peato Mauvaka, were always ahead in the contest with two tries scored in the first half by Romain Ntamack and Paul Graou while fullback Thomas Ramos put over six penalties and two conversions for a match-winning 22-point haul. Joris Segonds struck six penalties for Bayonne, while substitute Lucas Martin scored a consolation try with the final move of the match at the Groupama Stadium and Camille Lopez added the conversion. Ntamack finished off a sweeping move through the middle of the field for the first try in the 12th minute, with lock Thibaud Flament breaking through before popping the ball to wing Juan Cruz Mallia, whose blind behind-his-back pass put the flyhalf over. Graou's 33rd-minute score came after the ball was fed down an advancing Toulouse backline and then whipped back inside for the scrumhalf to easily go over. Basque club Bayonne were playing at this stage of the competition for the first time in 42 years and were only five points behind at halftime. However, Ramos punished their mistakes in the second half with four penalties to put the game beyond them, with their late score offering some consolation. The second semi-final is also at Lyon on Saturday when European champions Bordeaux-Begles take on Toulon. The final will be at the Stade de France in Paris on June 28. Argentina send Lions down under with 28-24 warm-up defeat
DUBLIN - Argentina beat a stuttering British and Irish Lions for the first time ever on Friday with a 28-24 warm-up game victory at the Aviva Stadium that left coach Andy Farrell with plenty to do as his squad get ready to leave for Australia. Just as they did when they last met in a 25-25 draw before the 2005 tour, the Pumas had the Lions on the ropes early thanks to tries from Ignacio Mendy and Tomas Albornoz either side of a Bundee Aki effort that gave them a deserved 21-10 halftime lead. The Lions, playing without almost half of their panel due to recent club commitments and injury, were a different animal early in the second half and regained the lead after a penalty try and another home crowd score, this time for Tadhg Beirne. But Santiago Carreras put Argentina back in front against the run of play with another great team try and the error-strewn Lions could not reply again to leave themselves five more games, all in Australia, to set things right before the first test against the Wallabies on July 19. India future already looking bright as new generation step up to fill Kohli and Sharma void
India future already looking bright as new generation step up to fill Kohli and Sharma void LEEDS, England - The retirement of two Indian batting icons in less than a year piled the pressure on the next generation to step up, and new skipper Shubman Gill and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal look ready to fill the void left by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Losing the India bowler with the second-most test wickets in Ravichandran Ashwin as well as former captains Kohli and Rohit in quick succession left India facing a daunting task during their tour of England. With England missing several frontline bowlers through injury for the series opener at Headingley, India were keen to make their mark. Jaiswal and Gill proved that there is still plenty of depth left in the Indian batting line-up, with both scoring centuries on Friday as the visitors piled on the runs to end day one of the first test on 359-3. The next 10 tests could define how the combination of skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum are viewed, after plenty of highs and lows over the past few years, with the Ashes series in Australia following India's visit. Putting India into bat to apply further pressure, at a ground where each of the previous six test matches have been won by the side bowling first, 23-year-old Jaiswal proved that the tourists had quickly transitioned from the old to the new. The scourge of England, however, was not overawed by any stretch, as he became the first Indian batter to score centuries in his first match in both Australia and England with a flawless display of off-side batting. Three of Jaiswal's five centuries have come against England. In total, he has now amassed a colossal 813 runs in 10 tests when facing McCullum's side. "We spoke a lot in the middle (with Gill) and we just made sure we tried to play session by session," Jaiswal told reporters. "Try to get as many runs as we can get, put the ball in the right places. "We enjoy playing together, there is amazing camaraderie between us. The way he batted was incredible, so calm and composed given the circumstances. I always enjoy batting with him. "Everywhere I go, everything I do in cricket, I love it. Of course some moments are more special than others." While Jaiswal dealt with the heat on a scorching Leeds day, Gill could not have been under more scrutiny. Without a test century outside of Asia, Gill came to the crease in Kohli's number four position in the order, with quick wickets before lunch swinging the momentum in England's favour. After back-to-back fours in the 32nd over settled his early nerves, Gill sprayed boundaries to all corners, bringing up his hundred with a glorious drive through the covers. Just five India captains have reached three figures in their first match as skipper. Gill now has the opportunity on day two to go really big and really make his mark.
