Scheme to improve market access for mango farmers in Oman
Muscat – In an effort to enhance the sultanate's agricultural sector and support local farmers, Oman Agricultural Development Company (OADC) has announced that it will begin receiving the 2025 harvest of local mangoes at its dedicated collection centre in Silal Fruit and Vegetable Central Market. Under the new programme, eligible Omani mango producers are invited to deliver their harvest according to agreed quality, quantity and variety standards. These criteria will be set jointly by OADC and participating farmers ahead of delivery. Farmers interested in joining the programme can register and coordinate by calling 92253973 or 99568300. The deadline to deliver mango consignments is July 15. In a statement, OADC said the programme aims to strengthen the value chain for Omani mangoes by acting as a central hub for collection and marketing. This is expected to improve market access for farmers and help ensure that high-quality local mangoes reach consumers in Oman and regional markets. OADC's focus on quality-driven harvests aligns with broader national efforts to improve food security and promote agribusiness, complementing initiatives of Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources to modernise production and raise smallholder incomes. The collection drive follows the recent Mango Season Exhibition held in Muscat from June 19 to 21, which brought together farmers and specialists to discuss crop propagation, cultivation methods, variety development and marketing, highlighting the increasing value of mangoes in Oman's horticultural sector.

Over 250 model farms boost fruit production in Dhahirah
Muscat – Dhahirah is witnessing steady progress in agricultural development through continued expansion of the Model Commercial Farms programme, an initiative launched by Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) in 2020. Data released by Directorate General of Agricultural and Water Resources in the governorate indicates that, as of mid-2025, more than 250 model farms have been established across wilayats in Dhahirah covering a total area exceeding 140 acres. As part of the programme, approximately 9,000 tissue-culture date palm saplings and 6,000 seedlings of various fruit trees – including mango, Omani lemon, guava, fig and grape – have been distributed among farmers. The programme is aimed at boosting the agricultural sector through development of organised, economically viable farms that adopt modern irrigation techniques. These technologies are a prerequisite to participate in the programme, as these contribute to water conservation and improved production efficiency. Programme officials stated that it plays an integral role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices, enhancing food security and improving farmers' livelihoods. In addition to provision of high-quality plant varieties, MAFWR continues to offer technical guidance and advisory support to ensure long-term productivity and economic returns. The programme's success achieved in Dhahirah serves as a model for similar initiatives in other governorates, in line with the ministry's strategic plan to achieve a qualitative leap in the sultanate's agricultural sector. In a related development, the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Dhahirah issued a total of 1,462 water licences covering a wide range of water-related activities in its wilayats in 2024. The licences include approvals for construction and maintenance of dams and aflaj, implementation of development projects, drilling of new and replacement wells, deepening and cleaning of existing wells, and projects related to water reuse. Additional licences were issued for inventory certificates, replacement of inventory plates, and extension of water pipelines from wells. Officials emphasised the fact that the licensing process is essential for sustainable management of water resources in the governorate, while supporting the national strategy to preserve water security in alignment with the sultanate's broader sustainable development goals.

Oman strengthens food security through model farm programme
Dhank: More than 250 farms in Al Dhahirah Governorate have benefited from the Commercial Model Fields Program, an initiative launched by the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in 2020 to promote sustainable agriculture and strengthen food security across the Sultanate, according to a report by Oman Daily. As part of the program, over 9,000 tissue-cultured date palm saplings and 6,000 high-quality fruit tree seedlings have been distributed to farmers across the governorate, covering more than 140 acres of cultivated land. The initiative supports economic-scale farms in all three wilayats of Al Dhahirah, helping them adopt modern irrigation systems and apply advanced agricultural practices. The program aims to improve productivity, raise the quality of local produce, and increase farmers' income through the cultivation of carefully selected fruit varieties, including mango, Eureka lemon, Omani lime, guava, fig, and grapes. It also encourages a shift toward water-efficient farming methods by requiring the installation of modern irrigation systems as a condition for support. According to the General Directorate of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah, the model farms serve as living examples of what sustainable and profitable agriculture can look like when guided by structured planning, smart technology, and continuous field support. The ministry works closely with farmers to provide technical guidance, regular follow-ups, and field inspections. This hands-on approach ensures that farms not only meet production targets but also operate efficiently and sustainably in the long term. Though currently focused on Al Dhahirah, the program extends to other governorates as part of Oman's broader agricultural development strategy. Officials emphasize that the ultimate goal is to enhance food security, reduce reliance on imports, and equip local farmers with the tools needed to compete in a modern agricultural landscape. By integrating best practices with practical support, the Model Fields Program is reshaping the farming sector—field by field—toward a more resilient, productive, and food-secure Oman.
