Springboks to cut extended training squad on Sunday
The Springboks will be whittling down their training squad from 55 players to 42 as they prepare for the start of the international season.

The Springboks are set to cut their training squad from 55 players to 42 on Sunday, as they head into the second week of their pre-season preparations ahead of the coming international season.
The Boks named an extended 54-man squad last week for the build-up to the opening match of the season against the Barbarians in Cape Town later this month, while Evan Roos was added to the group on Sunday after Cameron Hanekom's injury, picked up in the URC semifinal between the Bulls and Sharks, ruled him out of action for some time.
A large number of players from the Bulls and Sharks squads have yet to join up with the Boks, due to them still being in action for their franchises, as well as some picking up recent injuries.
Players who would have been part of the squad, but aren't due to long term injuries, include Frans Malherbe, Elrigh Louw, Deon Fourie and Trevor Nyakane. They are not expected to play for the Boks this year, and Hanekom has now joined the list.
Short term injuries
Players in the current squad who are on the short-term injury list, and thus could make the 42-man group named on Sunday include Gerhard Steenekamp, Ntuthuko Mchunu, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Ben-Jason Dixon, Juarno Augustus, Lukhanyo Am, Jasper Wiese, Grant Williams, and Makazole Mapimpi.
All the selected Bulls players have yet to join up, as well as Leinster's RG Snyman, while Handre Pollard and Thomas du Toit, who take each other on in the English Premiership final this weekend when Leicester Tigers battle it out with Bath, will also be late arrivals to the Boks.
Damian Willemse will be unavailable for the opener against the Barbarians, as he still has to serve out his recent ban, after picking up a red card playing for the Stormers in the URC.
Bok coach Rassie Erasmus admitted in a press conference on Thursday that despite them shrinking the group, it didn't mean the players that get cut will miss the rest of the season and can still be included at a later date.
'We will wait to see if there are any injuries from the URC final and then announce the group of players on Sunday that will get together next week,' explained Erasmus.
'That said, it doesn't mean that those players are the only ones who will be in the mix this year. There are players who are returning from injury within the next few weeks and months, and we would definitely like to see some of the players who have been playing well get a chance this season.'
Augustus in limbo
One of the players that the Boks' management are unsure about when he will be joining up is Augustus, who picked up a back injury in training with Northampton Saints a few weeks ago that saw him miss the remainder of the English season.
But due to him switching clubs, to Irish side Ulster, he has to get medically cleared by Northampton first, before he can join up with the Boks, who will themselves assess when he can return to action.
Due to this Erasmus will feel relieved to have Roos available, though questions have been raised in some quarters about there being an issue between the Stormers No 8 and the Bok coach, which played a part in the player's initial exclusion from the Bok squad.
'I read in the media that it must be because of a personal issue that I didn't pick Evan. That is not true, and you can ask Evan himself. It was nothing like that,' said Erasmus.
'In my opinion, he just wasn't playing as well as the other number eights, and that doesn't mean he was playing badly. Sometimes you have guys of Springbok standard, like Evan, but other guys are ahead of them, or we have guys that can fit into the position in question.
'For instance, we have Kwagga Smith who can play number eight. It can also be a case of the guys we pick fit in better with what we are trying to do.'

Bellingham strikes as Dortmund sink Sundowns
CINCINNATI - Jobe Bellingham netted his first Borussia Dortmund goal in a thrilling 4-3 win over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Club World Cup on Saturday. The English midfielder, who this month followed older brother Jude's footsteps in joining the German side, started for the first time for Dortmund. Sundowns took a surprise early lead but Dortmund hit back strongly to triumph in sweltering conditions in Cincinnati at the TQL Stadium and move top of Group F. Dortmund won the ball high up the pitch and Julian Brandt crossed for the Guinea international to score with a fine leap and header, continuing his fine form this season. Bellingham, who joined earlier in June from Sunderland for 33 million euros ($37 million), netted Dortmund's third just before the break. Williams parried a cross into his path and after controlling on his chest, Bellingham drilled home. His brother Jude signed for Dortmund five years ago, before joining Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2023. "Hey Jobe," sang Dortmund fans, adapting the Beatles classic "Hey Jude" which they used to sing to Jude Bellingham. Dortmund were toothless in their opening draw against Fluminense but grabbed their fourth when Kuliso Mudau turned into his own net as he tried to cut out a cross. Three minutes later Iqraam Rayners pulled one back as the Sundowns, who have won the last eight South African league titles, refused to give up. Gayton McKenzie in embarrassing water polo gaffe
While it's true that South Africa are in the midst of a 'golden' period – especially on the sporting field – Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie may just have gotten a little too carried away with his patriotism. It appears that, embarrassingly, McKenzie did not pay careful enough attention to one of his 'own' sporting federation's teams competing in Europe. McKenzie took to social media on Saturday to post: 'We are the best sporting nation in the world ' in reaction to an image of the South African U20 water polo side finishing 19th – and second LAST – at the U20 World Championships in Croatia. Awkward! Clearly Gayton McKenzie had not done his homework and assumed, one can only imagine, that the side had in fact won the tournament when it clearly states '19th/20th final'. Even more embarrassing for the Minister of Sport was the fact that the team had to finance their own way to the tournament. The team included schoolboys as young as 16. The gaffe quickly did the rounds on WhatsApp groups on Saturday, to the amusement of many. In their initial group matches, the South African side suffered heavy defeats against Brazil (25-6) and Germany (30-1). In what was then termed the classification round, the South African side then went down 7-6 to Kazakhstan, 21-8 to Colombia and 21-10 to Canada. That put them in the playoff for 19th-20th place against New Zealand – a match they won 16-15 following a penalty shootout. In total, the South African U20 side played six matches, lost five, won one, scored 47 goals and conceded a whopping 119 for an average defeat of 20-8. None of the South African team's matches were against any of the eight best sides in the world who were drawn in Division 1. Quite why Gayton McKenzie was celebrating those performances so enthusiastically, is somewhat puzzling. Even more baffling was the thousands of 'likes' and messages of congratulations that the post received! While South Africa does currently boast the world champion Springboks and Proteas, the world's strongest man and woman, and several of the fastest athletes in the world – among other impressive feats – it does not have – and will never lay claim to having – a water polo side that will ever win an international tournament. No rivalry among Springboks fullbacks, says Aphelele Fassi

However, he has been working on his strengths with the aid of Le Roux and Willemse. For him, it's important to be able to learn and feed off Le Roux who's been capped 97 times by the Springboks. 'In situations where I don't know what to do, I kind of feed off him. He has had a massive impact. This past week, I sat and asked him a few questions.
