MPs, MLAs given powers to recommend teacher transfers
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has authorised elected representatives in the State to recommend the transfer of up to 15 primary and secondary school teachers within their respective constituencies, informed by a notification issued by the School and Mass Education(S&ME) department on Tuesday.
'Government after careful consideration have been pleased to give discretion to Hon'ble MPs/MLAs to recommend up to 15 most deserving cases of transfer of teachers (that shall include both Elementary & Secondary) pertaining to their constituency area, to the Collector concerned of the district, for disposal of the same by the District Level Transfer Committee (DLTC) during this transfer session,' reads the notification.
However, the State government has laid down certain conditions for the Members of the Legislative Assembly and Members of Parliament. As per the S&ME department notification, the recommendation should not violate the principle of rationalisation. It also clarified that priority should be given to the teachers with an urgent need.
The government has barred the transfer of teachers from rural areas to urban areas. The government also noted that the elected representatives can only propose the transfer of teachers within the same district. 'This discretion is applicable for intra-district transfer only. The proposals of the Hon'ble MPs/MLAs are to be submitted to the District Collector concerned and will be disposed of by the DLTC. Where the Parliamentary Constituency (PC) covers more than one district, the proposals will be submitted to the Nodal Collector (Returning Officer of that PC) under intimation to the other Collectors within the jurisdiction of that PC for disposal by respective DLTC(s),' added the notification.
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha members have been suggested to send their list of recommendations to the Director of Secondary Education under intimation to the Director of Elementary Education, which will forward the list to the respective Collectors under intimation to the DEE for disposal of the same by the DLTC(s). The Odisha government also directed that all the proposals should be submitted and disposed of during this transfer session (15th May to 15th June) only. The government notified that this provision is a one-time measure, which is applicable only for the current educational year.
A similar notification was issued by the previous BJD-led government in 2021, allowing the elected representatives to recommend the transfer of up to 10 primary and secondary school teachers within their respective constituencies during the 2021-2022 academic session.

Medvedev's current stance stands in contrast to actions taken during his own presidency (2008–2012), when Russia aligned itself with international efforts to pressure and sanction Iran over its nuclear ambitions. In June 2010, following the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1929, Medvedev signed a decree that banned Iranian investments in Russia's uranium production and nuclear sectors. The measure was part of a package of sanctions intended to push Iran toward compliance with international nuclear also suspended selling S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran as part of that decree. This advanced defense platform had been part of a previous agreement between the two nations. The move was seen as a significant gesture of Russia's support for the UN-led sanctions regime at the time.

National Conference's Farfooq Abdullah SRINAGAR: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah blamed the "dual power structure" in the Union territory for the slow pace of development and warned that his party would move SC if statehood isn't restored soon. It is the first time NC has openly threatened legal action on restoration of statehood for Jammu & Kashmir. Abdullah said Saturday that people's expectations remain unmet due to the lack of full statehood despite formation of an elected govt in Oct 2024 - the first in J&K since 2018 and after region was carved into two UTs in 2019. "People hoped the new govt would address their demands, but the absence of statehood is a major obstacle," he said after a meeting with party delegates at Kokernag in south Kashmir's Anantnag district. "How can we fulfil aspirations without statehood? Only with it can we have a full-fledged cabinet capable of addressing public issues effectively," he added. Abdullah said his party had launched an outreach campaign to make people aware of "certain political forces ready to compromise their interests". Political row erupts in Rajasthan over student leader's arrest at university
JAIPUR The arrest of former Rajasthan University Students' Union president Nirmal Chaudhary on the university campus during an examination on Saturday has triggered a political row in the State .Mr. Chaudhary, who was reportedly detained by plainclothes police while appearing for an exam, was later formally arrested in connection with a 2022 criminal case. The charges against him include unlawful assembly, blocking a road, obstructing government work, misbehaving with a senior police officer, and damaging public property during a protest. Sangaria MLA and State Youth Congress president Abhimanyu Poonia, who was present at the scene, accompanied Mr. Chaudhary to the Gandhi Nagar police station. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Jaipur-East) Tejaswani Gautam said Mr. Poonia was not taken into custody but voluntarily sat in the police vehicle with Mr. Chaudhary. However, the Congress alleged that both leaders were detained and condemned the police action, calling it a violation of democratic rights. The incident follows a recent protest led by Mr. Chaudhary and Mr. Poonia outside the mortuary of Sawai Man Singh Government Hospital in Jaipur. The demonstration was held to demand justice for Rakesh Bishnoi, a resident doctor from Jodhpur who died by suicide, allegedly under pressure from a senior. The protest was called off after the government agreed to a speedy probe and financial aid for Dr. Bishnoi's family. 'The Bharatiya Janata Party government first did not even listen to Dr. Bishnoi's family, and when these public representatives joined their protest seeking justice, they were implicated in the criminal case,' the Congress leader posted on X. Mr. Chaudhary won the student union election as an Independent in 2022 during the Congress regime. State Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra, Leader of the Opposition Tikaram Jully, and former Deputy CM Sachin Pilot condemned the police action. Mr. Jully said such actions 'reek of dictatorial tendencies', while Mr. Pilot accused the BJP government of targeting Opposition voices. 'If the administration acts out of political vendetta against Opposition leaders, we will not remain silent,' Mr. Pilot told reporters.
