Army jawan held by Punjab police on spying charges, was ‘introduced to ISI by Dubai-based smuggler'

Gurpreet, who joined the Army in 2016, was posted in Jammu with the Sikh regiment, and was at his native place on a month's leave at the time of his arrest. The arrest was made Saturday by Amritsar Rural police, who took the Army jawan identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopy Fauji, along with his aide, Sahil Masih, into custody. New Delhi: Police in Punjab have arrested a serving Army jawan for allegedly sharing sensitive information with operatives of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), state police chief Gaurav Yadav said Sunday. Both Gurpreet and Sahil belong to Dhariwal village in Amritsar and were introduced to operatives of the ISI around five months back by a Dubai-based drug smuggler from the same town, DGP Yadav said in a statement Sunday. He added that the probe conducted so far has established that Gurpreet was in direct contact with ISI and is suspected of sharing sensitive and confidential information via pen drives. Additionally, he said that two mobile phones containing virtual numbers allegedly used for communication with ISI handlers have also been recovered from the accused. The key ISI handler involved has been identified as Rana Javed, DGP Yadav said. Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh said Gurpreet systematically exploited his official position to collect classified information, which he then allegedly passed on to his handlers via pen drives and discs. 'The espionage network was reportedly facilitated by an acquaintance identified as Arjan, a Dubai-based drug trafficker from Dhariwal, who introduced Gurpreet to ISI operatives five months ago, he said, while adding that since then, Gurpreet has actively engaged in the unauthorised collection and relay of sensitive military data to the ISI using pre-decided drop locations,' a Punjab Police spokesperson said Sunday. SSP Singh added that Gurpreet had been receiving money from ISI operatives in exchange for classified information. The funds, he said, were deposited into the bank accounts of Gurpreet's friends, relatives, and foreign associates through credit to avoid detection. According to an FIR filed by Amritsar Rural district police, the duo was arrested on a tip-off from a source who alerted them to Gurpreet's suspicious activities. 'Even today, these two (accused) were sitting on the newly built Bharat Mala National Highway in Kaler village and making some plan. If they are raided now, they can be caught, and their phones, documents, and other belongings can be searched, allowing a significant amount of information to be obtained from them. Among them, information about the virtual/WhatsApp and money transactions of the agents of Pakistan's ISI can be found,' a police officer documented in the report that formed the basis of the FIR. The duo has been booked at Lopoke police station in Amritsar Rural under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act and section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which deals with common intention in criminal acts. ThePrint reached Army spokesperson Colonel Nishant Arvind for comment via calls and WhatsApp messages but had not received a response by the time of publication. This report will be updated if and when a response is received. Agent who sent Pb youth to US via ‘dunki route' denied bail

Chandigarh: The special court of additional district and sessions judge, Neetika Verma, in Mohali has rejected the regular bail application of a Delhi-based travel agent accused of sending a youth to the US via the illegal 'dunki route'. The case has put human trafficking networks operating under the guise of overseas job placements in the spotlight once again. The bail plea of Gagandeep Singh (36), a resident of Delhi's Tilak Nagar, was dismissed by the special court, with the NIA strongly opposing the bail on grounds of the severity and implications of the alleged crime. Gagandeep Singh is accused of illegally facilitating the travel of Gursewak Singh, a resident of Goindwal Sahib in Tarn Taran district, to the US through the perilous dunki route — via Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico — after allegedly charging Rs 45 lakh under the pretext of providing a valid visa. According to the FIR registered on Feb 18, under Section 13 of the Punjab Travel Professionals (Regulation) Act, 2014, and Section 318 of the BNS, 2023, Gursewak was eventually captured by US border patrol authorities before he could cross into US territory and was detained for 19 days. He was deported and returned to India on Feb 15. In its order, the court observed: "The offence allegedly committed by the accused is grave in nature, where an unsuspecting aspirant was cheated, his life endangered, and his family coerced to pay a hefty sum for his safety. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The conduct of the accused points to a larger human trafficking racket." The court cited the possibility of the accused intimidating witnesses or absconding if granted bail and added that the chequered antecedents of the accused did not favour his release. The accused had moved a bail application under Section 483 of the BNSS, 2023, asserting his innocence and claiming that the matter had been "amicably settled" with the complainant. His counsel argued that a sum of Rs 19 lakh was agreed upon as compensation, with Rs 5 lakh already paid via a demand draft dated April 23, 2025, and the remaining to be paid by August 2025. However, the court refused to accept the settlement as a mitigating factor in light of the seriousness of the offence and its broader societal impact. Gagandeep Singh remains in judicial custody as investigations into the larger network of agents involved in the illegal immigration racket continue.

Suicide Bomber Kills 20 In Syrian Church Near Damascus During Mass

DWEILA, Syria: A suicide bomber in Syria opened fire then detonated an explosive vest inside a Greek Orthodox church filled with people praying on Sunday, killing at least 20 and wounding 52 others, state media reported. The attack took place in Dweil'a on the outskirts of Damascus inside the Mar Elias Church, according to state media SANA, citing the Health Ministry for the count of dead and wounded. Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said there were at least 19 people killed and dozens of others wounded, but did not give exact numbers. Some local media reported that children were among the casualties. The attack on the church was the first of its kind in Syria in years, and comes as Damascus under its de facto Islamist rule is trying to win the support of minorities. As President Ahmad al-Sharaa struggles to exert authority across the country, there have been concerns about the presence of sleeper cells of extremist groups in the war-torn country. No group immediately claimed responsibility Sunday, but the Syrian Interior Ministry said an extremist from the Islamic State group entered the church, fired at the people there before detonating himself with an explosives vest, echoing some witness testimonies. Syrian Information Minister Hamza Mostafa condemned the attack, calling it a terrorist attack. "This cowardly act goes against the civic values that brings us together," he said on X. "We will not back down from our commitment to equal citizenship ... and we also affirm the state's pledge to exert all its efforts to combat criminal organizations and to protect society from all attacks threatening its safety." Witnesses said the gunman with his face covered entered and fired at the people. When a crowd charged at him to remove him from the church, he detonated his explosives at the entrance. "People were praying safely under the eyes of God," said Father Fadi Ghattas, who said he saw at least 20 people killed with his own eyes. "There were 350 people praying at the church." However, Meletius Shahati, a church priest, said there was a second gunman who shot at the church door before the other person detonated himself. Issam Nasr who was praying at the church said he saw people "blown to bits." "We have never held a knife in our lives. All we ever carried were our prayers," he said. Security forces and first-responders rushed to the church. Panicked survivors wailed, as one lady fell to her knees and burst into tears. A photo circulated by Syrian state media SANA showed the church's pews covered in debris and blood.
