Aiden Markram hopes WTC Final win helps reignite Test cricket in South Africa

India Today7 days ago

Player of the Match in the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025, Aiden Markram has hoped that the win will reignite the country's passion for the red-ball format. Speaking after the team's first ICC trophy win in 27 years, Markram hoped that Test cricket remains the pinnacle of the sport in his nation.South Africa's relationship with Test cricket had been dwindling in recent years. Amongst the teams participating in the World Test Championship, South Africa played the joint lowest number of Test matches—12, alongside Bangladesh. In comparison, Australia and India played 19 matches, while England played 22.advertisementWTC Final 2025: Match Report | As it Happened
Markram stated that Test was his favourite format and hoped that young cricketers strive for the Test cap in the Rainbow Nation."It has always been my most favourite and most important format. Naturally, the choice of format is not in our hands, it is sort of the cards that you get dealt, really. It is really important, in my opinion, to keep Test cricket as the No. 1 format in South Africa. We understand the dynamics of the cricket world, but it is more about the young guy coming through and for him to consider the Test cap as the most important thing in South Africa. How long he plays for is a completely different conversation nowadays, but the No. 1 priority should be to play Test cricket, and I have always believed that," Aiden Markram said after the WTC Final.advertisementThe right-hander was under the pump while coming into bat in the second innings of the match. South Africa seemed to be down and out of the competition after letting Australia set a target of 282 runs, a sum of runs that had not been chased at Lord's in the last 20 years.A defiant Markram said that answers had hopefully been provided from the team's end, who had been knocking on the doors of multiple ICC finals in recent times."All the questions that have been asked in the past have now hopefully been answered. In my opinion, the WTC Final was going to be the toughest one, as many days of good cricket can only get you results," Markram said.Asked about the feeling of walking back to the pavilion after getting South Africa within reach of a historic win, Markram said that he wished he could have soaked it in more."I wish I could have (stood there and soaked in the standing ovation). But that is me being me, I was so angry at myself when I got out. But there is definitely one or two memories from that," he concluded.Must Watch

Ishan Kishan to make county debut with Nottinghamshire, inks two-match deal

India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has joined Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club on a two-match County Championship deal, the English side announced on its X (formerly twitter) handle on Friday evening. Kishan, who has played all three formats for India, will be available for selection for the first-class fixtures against Yorkshire at home ground Trent Bridge starting Sunday while the next game will be away at Taunton against Somerset. The Patna-born Jharkhand cricketer will serve as a short-term replacement for World Test Championship-winning South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne. The Protea will be away on national duty to play a two-Test series in Zimbabwe. Kishan turned out for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) where he scored a 45-ball century against Rajasthan Royals and remained unbeaten on 106 from 47 balls. "I'm feeling very excited to get my first taste of playing county cricket in England, and it will be a great chance to showcase my skills," Ishan was quoted as saying by the club website. "I want to make sure I am the best cricketer I can be, and playing in English conditions will really help me to learn new skills. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo Trent Bridge is such a famous ground that is well-known in India and around the world, and I am really excited that I will be playing there," the southpaw added. Meanwhile, speaking on Kishan's inclusion to the squad, Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores said, "We're all very pleased to have secured the services of Ishan for these next two Championship fixtures while Kyle is away with South Africa." A wicketkeeper-batter himself during his playing days, the former Three Lions player and coach added, "We want players to be themselves and to bring their own game, and something that especially excites me about Ishan is how keen he is to be involved in county cricket. He brings proven quality in his ball-striking, as a hard-hitting middle-order batter, but while he's still developing his red-ball game, this spell will be really beneficial for him, and for us. "

The 36-year-old player wishes to live a quiet life, away from the spotlight, fans' excitement, and photographers, with his daughter Vamika and his one-year-old son Akaay. A report in The Telegraph says that Virat, now living in London with his wife Anushka Sharma and their kids, Vamika and Akaay, has decided to live a peaceful and private life far from the cricket ground he used to dominate. Virat Kohli wants a quiet life far from cricket, even though he loves the game a lot. He won't watch the matches while the Indian team prepares for two Test games in the city where he and Anushka live. He also did not attend the World Test Championship final or the MCC's 'World Cricketer Connect' event. The report also said that Kohli feels peaceful in London, something he didn't find in India. He enjoys walking around the city like any regular husband, carrying Anushka's shopping bags, visiting cafes with his daughter Vamika, and holding his baby son Akaay in his arms. Star Cricketer Virat Kohli happily said he likes having privacy, something he always wanted in London. That's the main reason they moved there. The couple is said to live in Notting Hill, where they have stayed for several years. "We were not in the country. Just to feel normal for two months - for me, my family - it was a surreal experience. Couldn't have been more grateful to God for the opportunity to spend time with the family. It's an amazing experience to just be another person on the road and not be recognized," said Virat Kohli
