South Africa captain Temba Bavuma ruled out of Zimbabwe Test series with hamstring injury sustained at WTC final
After guiding South Africa to a historic World Test Championship win last week against Australia with a strained hamstring, captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the Proteas two-Test series against Zimbabwe, set to start on June 28.
'Proteas Men's Test captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe due to a left hamstring strain. Bavuma sustained the injury while batting during South Africa's second innings on day three of the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord's Cricket Ground. He is set to undergo further scans to assess the extent of the injury. Keshav Maharaj will captain the side in his absence,' the South Africa cricket team's X account posted.
Bavuma was injured in the second innings of South Africa's five-wicket victory, soldiering on as he scored a crucial 66 in a match-winning third wicket stand of 147 with centurion Aiden Markram. Keshav Maharaj will captain the side in Bavuma's absence, with no replacement named in the squad for the latter.
'As much as the Aussies were saying we were chokers in the field, we never made it our thing. We just said we've got to keep going and be relentless, and the harder we knock, the doors will open. Chokers was not our tag to carry, we never spoke about it, although you always feel a responsibility when you wear the badge,' Bavuma had said earlier this week at the Cricket South Africa headquarters, where his side were given an official welcome.
The win over Australia gave South Africa their first major trophy since 1998, when they won the ICC KnockOut Trophy (later rebranded as ICC Championship Trophy). The Proteas received a grand welcome after returning home on Wednesday. Bavuma's men were greeted by several thousand supporters when they landed in Johannesburg following a five-wicket win over Australia in the final at Lord's last week.
The first test vs Zimbabwe will be played from June 28-July 2 at the Queens Sports Club, with the second also in Bulawayo from July 6-10.

Nottinghamshire rope in Ishan Kishan on short-term deal
Nottingham: India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has signed for Nottinghamshire on a short-term deal covering the next two Rothesay County Championship fixtures. The left-hander will serve as Kyle Verreynne's replacement while the World Test Championship-winning South African is away playing a two-Test series in Zimbabwe. He will be eligible for selection for the upcoming Championship fixtures against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge and Somerset in Taunton. 'I'm feeling very excited to get my first taste of playing county cricket in England, and it will be a great chance to showcase my skills. I want to make sure I am the best cricketer I can be, and playing in English conditions will really help me to learn new skills. 'Trent Bridge is such a famous ground that is well-known in India and around the world, and I am really excited that I will be playing there," said Kishan. The left-hander will serve as Kyle Verreynne's replacement while the World Test Championship-winning South African is away playing a two-Test series in Zimbabwe. Ishan, whose move is subject to international clearance, is a former Asia Cup and U19 World Cup winner with India, and has represented his nation at senior level in all three international formats. Having been included in India's squad for the 2023 World Test Championship final, Ishan made his Test bow a month later against West Indies and struck an unbeaten 52 from just 34 deliveries in his second match. He has over 3,000 First-Class runs to his name, with 17 half-centuries and eight hundreds, alongside having claimed 118 victims from behind the stumps. Ishan has represented Jharkand in the Ranji Trophy for his entire career, and in 2016, still aged only 18, he struck 273 against Delhi, which at the time was a new record for Jharkand in the competition. He has also turned out for IPL sides Gujarat Lions, Mumbai Indians, and, most recently, Sunrisers Hyderabad, for whom he hit a 47-ball 106in the 2025 edition. Head Coach Peter Moores added: 'We're all very pleased to have secured the services of Ishan for these next two Championship fixtures while Kyle is away with South Africa. 'We want players to be themselves and to bring their own game, and something that especially excites me about Ishan is how keen he is to be involved in county cricket. 'He brings proven quality in his ball-striking, as a hard-hitting middle-order batter, but while he's still developing his red-ball game, this spell will be really beneficial for him, and for us.'

'It Was A Pleasure To See Yashasvi...': Jaiswal's Headingley Hundred Stuns Internet
Last Updated: Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored his fifth Test century at Headingley, putting India in a strong position against England. Star India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal on Friday racked up his fifth Test hundred at Headingley against England, to put his team in a commanding position against the hosts in the opening game of their fourth World Test Championship campaign, yet again making the world stand up and applaud him. Jaiswal 's 100* and skipper Shubman Gill's 58* took India to 215/2 at tea on the first day of the opening Test against England in Headingley. Jaiswal brought up his fifth century in Tests off 144 deliveries and Gill his eighth fifty off 56 balls in his first outing as India Test skipper, underlining the different route they travelled on the day. 'It was a pleasure to see Yashasvi Jaiswal bat in those English conditions today. Pure joy. Brilliant 💯," Irfan Pathan tweeted on Friday evening. Rahul, Gill but for now hats off to Yashasvi Jaiswal! 🙇🙇🙇— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) June 20, 2025 England might see this innings as an ominous sign from Jaiswal that he might just replicate that 712-run series against them in India in 2024. It wasn't a typical Jaiswal innings where he flayed the bowlers around, but he showed admirable self-restraint, outside the off-stump. First Published: June 20, 2025, 20:39 IST
