Backbone unveils new Backbone Pro controller and now it's not just for your phone — play wirelessly on your PC, tablet and more

Tom's Guide05-05-2025

Building on the success of the Backbone One, Backbone is back with a pro version of one of the best phone controllers which features significant upgrades and even the option to play wirelessly over Bluetooth.
While the new Backbone Pro shares a similar look and form factor to the Backbone One, it's been completely redesigned to enhance comfort and provide wider device compatibility.
In addition to its new more rounded design that feels a lot more comfortable to hold for extended play sessions, Backbone has swapped out its smaller thumbsticks for full-sized ones in the Backbone Pro. Likewise, the controller now features two programmable back buttons which can be customized in the Backbone app.
The Backbone Pro also includes a number of upgrades aimed at making the controller quieter while in use. For instance, both its D-pad and face buttons now sport a carbon-pill design to reduce click volume. Its bumpers and triggers are larger and the triggers now use magnetic Hall Effect sensors for better longevity and accuracy.
On the bottom side of the Backbone Pro, you still have a USB-C charging port on the right for charging your phone while you play along with a headphone jack on the left so that you can connect a pair of wired headphones. However, next to the headphone jack, there's now a pairing button so that you can connect the Backbone Pro via Bluetooth.
Just like with previous models, the Backbone Pro connects to your phone using a USB-C connector on the right side of the controller. Not only does this give you a basically latency-free connection, it also means that you don't have to worry about charging the device if you want to play on one of the best phones.
Unlike the Backbone One though, the Backbone Pro does feature a battery which Backbone claims can get you up to 40 hours of wireless playtime. In wireless mode, the controller can pair with your phone, tablet, laptop, PC, smart TV and even VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
Instead of having to go through the pairing process whenever you want to switch between devices, Backbone has created what it calls its FlowState technology. This lets you instantly switch between your tablet, PC, TV and other devices with just a tap in the Backbone app. The best part though, your profiles, connection settings and input preferences follow you from screen to screen.
Due to the ongoing tariff decisions in the U.S., Backbone has yet to announce pricing for the Backbone Pro. However, as you might have guessed from the picture above, I actually have a Backbone Pro in for testing right now, so stay tuned to Tom's Guide for my hands-on experience with the new controller.

Amazon Prime Day 2025: The best early deals you can shop now, dates and everything else you need to know

Amazon Prime Day 2025 will be here soon on July 8-11, but as to be expected, you can already find some decent sales available now. Amazon always has lead-up sales in the days and weeks before Prime Day, and it's wise to shop early if you're on the hunt for something specific and you see that item at a good discount. Prime Day deals are typically reserved for subscribers, but there are always a few that anyone can shop. We expect this year to be no exception, and we're already starting to see that trend in these early Prime Day deals. These are the best Prime Day deals you can get right now ahead of the event, and we'll update this post with the latest offers as we get closer to the official days of Prime Day. Audible Premium Plus (three months) for $3 ($42 off): New subscribers can get three months of Audible for only $3, which represents a $42 discount. The Premium Plus tier gives you one book credit per month to use on any audiobook the service has, and you can stream any of the included titles for free on top of that. Audible also has members-only sales and discounts that you'll be able to take advantage of, too. The deal runs through July 31. Anker 313 wireless charging stand for $14 (29 percent off): One of our top picks for the best wireless chargers, Anker's 313 stand keeps things simple but effective. Just plop your phone down on its wide stand to get up to 10W of fast-charging power. It supports both portrait and landscape orientation for your phone, and it'll work with cases up to 5mm thick. 8BitDo Micro Bluetooth gamepad for $17 (33 percent off): This cute controller works with Switch, Android and Raspberry Pi devices, and it has 16 buttons that can be customized with mapping using 8BitDo's mobile software. Samsung SmartTag 2 for $18.50 (38 percent off): Samsung users looking to keep track of their stuff need look no further than the SmartTag 2. One of our top picks for the best Bluetooth trackers, this accessory easily attaches to keys, bags and other items and uses Samsung's large finding network to show you their last known location. Anker 633 10K magnetic battery pack for $43 (28 percent off, Prime exclusive): This 10K battery pack attaches magnetically to the backs of iPhones, making it easy to recharge while on the go. It also has a built-in kickstand for easy video watching or FaceTime calling while powering up. Soundcore Space A40 wireless earbuds for $45 (44 percent off): The Space A40 are some of the best budget wireless earbuds you can get right now, thanks to excellent ANC performance for their price, a pleasant sound profile, a comfortable fit and multi-device connectivity. They also have a solid eight-hour battery life, plus an extra 40 with their charging case. Apple AirPods 4 for $99 at Amazon ($30 off): Apple's wireless earbuds don't have the best sound quality or battery life, and this entry-level model lacks wireless charging, Find My tracking and onboard volume controls. But it still gets you tons of Apple-friendly features — from fast pairing with iCloud devices to spatial audio to hands-free Siri — and its lightweight design should fit most ears better than previous AirPods. Apple iPad (A16) for $299 at Amazon ($50 off): The latest base model iPad comes with a faster A16 chip, 2GB more RAM and 128GB of storage as standard. It earned a score of 84 in our review — if you only need an iPad for roaming the internet, watching shows and doing some lighter productivity tasks, it's a good starter tablet. Apple Mac Mini M4 for $469 ($130 off): If you prefer desktops, the upgraded M4 Mac mini is one that won't take up too much space, but will provide a ton of power at the same time. Not only does it come with an M4 chipset, but it also includes 16GB of RAM in the base model, plus front-facing USB-C and headphone ports for easier access. Apple Watch Series 10 for $329 ($70 off): We consider Apple's flagship wearable to be the best smartwatch you can buy, period. It's a mostly iterative update, with faster charging, a slightly slimmer design and a marginally larger display than the prior Series 9. That said, it's still a comprehensive fitness tracker, and no other smartwatch can integrate as neatly with iPhones and other Apple devices. Ring Doorbell Battery + Indoor Cam 2 for $70 (50 percent off): If you're looking to build out a security system in your home, this bundle is a good place to start, giving you a video doorbell and an indoor security camera. You'll be able to see both live feeds in the Ring app, and they can send you motion alerts and let you speak to people on the other end of the camera when you're not at home. Anker MagGo 3-in-1 charging station for $82 (25 percent off): A top pick in our guide to the best multi-device wireless chargers, this Anker power station can charge a phone, pair of earbuds and smartwatch all at once. It's primarily built for Apple devices, with a built-in Apple Watch charger and a neat space for AirPods. It's a solid option for frequent travelers thanks to the fact that it folds up to roughly the size of a deck of cards when not in use. Levoit LVAC-200 cordless vacuum cleaner for $150 (25 percent off): One of our top picks for the best cordless vacuums, this Levoit machine picks up a good amount of dirt, debris and pet hair considering its size and cost. It's pretty lightweight and has a convenient single-button start, plus it can be quickly disassembled for easy storage. Blink Outdoor 4 security cameras (five-camera system) for $160 (60 percent off): Get enough security cameras to outfit most of your home with this bundle. The Outdoor 4 cams are some of our favorites; you can use them indoors or outdoors, they supports 1080p video, motion alerts, local video storage when you employ a thumb drive with the Sync Module 2 that comes with the pack and they're totally wireless, running on two AA batteries each. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 for $200 ($50 off): The latest Powerbeats Pro earbuds have a comfier design and powerful bass performance that's sure to keep you hyped during a workout. These are Apple's first wireless earbuds with built-in heart rate monitoring, too, but that will likely only appeal to those who intend on using these buds primarily while working out. GoPro Hero 13 Black action camera for $329 ($100 off): Our favorite action camera for most people, the Hero 13 Black now works with a family of module lenses, making it even more versatile than models that came before it, plus it has a larger battery that supports longer capture times. On top of that, it has good digital stabilization, a full-color screen and excellent image quality. Eufy E20 3-in-1 robot vacuum for $380 (42 percent off): One of Eufy's latest machines and a top pick of ours for the best robot vacuums, the E20 can putter around your home automatically, sucking up dirt and debris in its path. But then it can quickly transform into a cordless or handheld vacuum, allowing you to clean hard-to-reach spots manually. Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones + $30 Amazon gift card for $448 ($30 off): Sony's newest pair of premium cans just came out not too long ago, and they promptly took the top spot in our best wireless headphones guide. The company managed to improve sound quality and ANC this time around, plus they have an even comfier design and loads of extra features like multi-device connectivity, Speak-to-Chat and more. LG 42-inch C4 evo OLED smart TV for $700 (20 percent off): This 2024 OLED TV has over eight million self-lit pixels, a 144Hz refresh rate and support for NVIDIA G-Sync, AMD FreeSync Premium and VRR for gaming. It's powered by LG's a9 AI processor Gen7, and it has Alexa built in as well. Prime Day is Amazon's members-only shopping event, which means you'll have to be a Prime subscriber on Prime Day to take advantage of most of the savings. Amazon still offers a 30-day free trial to new Prime subscribers, so you can start your free trial closer to July and participate in the event. Amazon Prime Day 2025 will be back this year on July 8 through July 11. Amazon Prime Day typically comes around annually in July. In the last few years, Amazon has also had its "Big Deal Days" in October, which is effectively a second Prime Day and the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season. Prime subscribers can go to Amazon's site on Prime Day to see all of the exclusive deals they have access to. Prime subscribers do not have to do anything additional to get Prime Day sales: the discounts you see on product pages will show up in your cart automatically. If you're not a Prime subscriber and you go to Amazon to shop on Prime Day, you'll likely see tons of items on sale but only "with Prime;" those discounts will not be available to those who are not active Prime subscribers. Technically yes, but even if you do not pay for a Prime membership, you should still check out Amazon on Prime Day. While most Prime Day deals will be exclusively available to subscribers, there are always a handful of sales available to all shoppers. Amazon distinguishes between them very clearly: you'll see "Prime exclusive" on product pages near the deal pricing on the discounts that are only available to paying members. Separately, it's very likely that other retailers like Walmart, Target and Best Buy will have their own competing Prime Day sales during that time frame, too. So if you're not keen on shopping at Amazon at all, it's worth checking out other retailers during the week of Prime Day to see if they are matching Prime Day deal prices.

Companies Step Up Reskilling in the Era of AI

AI is not just reshaping industries; it's redefining the future of work. So, it's critical for companies to reskill and upskill their talent to remain relevant and co-exist with AI You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform industries, companies face a critical challenge: How to prepare their workforce for a future that looks vastly different from the past. To stay relevant, companies are taking on various measures to reskill and upskill their employees to mitigate the risk of turning them redundant. The World Economic Forum estimates that automation will displace 85 million jobs by 2025, and 40 per cent of core skills will change for workers. AI will usher in a new era of productivity and value, and business leaders in the C-suite should make employees part of that future. At IT services company Persistent Systems, continuous learning and development of its people has always been a strategic priority to ensure they remain relevant and future-ready. "Our talent strategy is rooted in a robust learning ecosystem, led by Persistent University and our Digital Engineering Academy. Our Digital Engineering Academy offers AI-personalized learning paths mapped to over 6,500 skills, enabling employees to gain both breadth and depth in emerging technologies," says Dhanashree Bhat, Chief Operating Officer, Persistent Systems. "Over 18,000 employees have completed internal foundational training in GenAI, and our teams have earned close to 4,000 external certifications. Beyond this, we are scaling access to deeper specializations in AI, ML, and GenAI through a mix of internal modules and industry-recognized certifications. We have over 22,000 partner certifications across a range of technologies, including AI, which are critical to driving customer transformation," says Bhat. Fidelity Investments' global capability center (GCC) in India has been a key part of the company's global operations for over two decades. With a talent base of over 7,000 associates in India, it plays a pivotal role in driving innovation and delivering business-critical solutions. "At Fidelity Investments India, we recognise that in today's fast-changing landscape, embracing the cutting edge of technology is key to making a difference. We look to develop solutions and experiences to meet the dynamic business requirements," says Srinivas Gururaja Rau, Head of Fidelity Fund and Investment Operations Technology India, Fidelity Investments. "We have embedded this culture of constant upskilling and reskilling across all levels of the organization. Whether it's through structured programs like LEAP, an upskilling cohort for early-career technologists, role-based learning journeys, internal technology communities, niche hackathon events, our innovation and patent programs, or regular hands-on certification and training programs, we provide a host of opportunities for our technologists to learn and work on the latest emerging technologies in financial services, to innovate for the future," says Rau. ACQUISITIONS AND PARTNERSHIPS Several companies are also acquiring niche startups and leveraging partnerships to enable their reskilling initiatives. For instance, IT major Accenture recently acquired edtech firm TalentSprint from NSE Academy Ltd. The acquisition is expected to bolster Accenture LearnVantage's ability to drive growth through key university certifications and high impact bootcamps, creating trained talent pools for enterprises and governments. As part of the acquisition, TalentSprint's team of approximately 210 professionals will join Accenture LearnVantage. "TalentSprint's end-to-end delivery capabilities of focused learning programs provide a competitive value proposition for learners and enterprises alike, making it a great fit for our expanding LearnVantage business," said Kishore Durg, global lead of Accenture LearnVantage. "The addition of TalentSprint further boosts our ability to meet our clients' demand for training, helping their people gain the essential technology skills in emerging areas needed to reinvent their organizations and achieve greater business value." Saurabh Kumar Sahu, who leads Accenture's India business, added, "India is witnessing a growing need for specialized technology skills at scale as enterprises accelerate their digital transformation efforts and Global Capability Centers evolve into R&D, innovation, and engineering hubs. We see significant opportunities to partner with these organisations to build a pool of readily deployable talent skilled in emerging technologies." The acquisition of TalentSprint complements Accenture's recent investments in Udacity and Award Solutions, and aligns with the company's USD 1 billion investment in LearnVantage over three years, announced in early 2024. "Since inception, our mission has been to equip learners with deep expertise for a disrupted world," said Anurag Bansal, Managing Director and CEO of TalentSprint. "Joining forces with Accenture LearnVantage allows us to scale our impact, delivering cutting-edge technology and next-gen management programs that are valued and trusted by students, professionals, organizations, and governments alike." French IT major Capgemini recently collaborated with the Nasscom Foundation to skill and certify more than 700 disadvantaged youths through their AI for Skilling program. As India moves swiftly towards an AI-driven future, the demand for a workforce proficient in AI competencies continues to grow. Capgemini and the Nasscom Foundation partnership plays a key role in helping to meet this demand by equipping the youth with advanced skills in generative AI, robotics, fintech, and more. Implemented currently in Delhi NCR and Bengaluru, the program is designed to provide a comprehensive 200-hour training, comprising over 140 hours of technical training and more than 60 hours of soft skills development. The initiative builds on Capgemini Digital Academy program, which trains thousands of youths across India in high-demand digital skills, creating opportunities for careers in technology. "AI is shaping a bold new era of work—one where innovation, inclusion, and human potential thrive together. Through Capgemini's Digital Academy, in partnership with Nasscom Foundation, we are bridging the digital divide - equipping the youth with industry-relevant AI and technology skills for meaningful careers. This initiative is also fuelled by the passion of our employee volunteers, who mentor and guide learners, reinforcing our commitment to inclusive growth," says Ashwin Yardi, CEO, Capgemini India. Commenting on the success of the initiative, Jyoti Sharma, CEO, Nasscom Foundation said, "AI is not just reshaping industries, it's redefining the future of work. Our collaboration with Capgemini, under the AI for Skilling initiative, reflects our shared vision of an inclusive digital economy, where marginalized youth have the opportunity to participate and break barriers to AI access. By enabling future-ready skills and focusing on foundational, core-work skills, we are investing in the potential of India's youth to fully embrace evolving digital opportunities." To ensure holistic development, the initiative extended beyond technical training and included expert sessions conducted by industry professionals, as well as aptitude-building modules, and awareness programs. Real-world exposure was also facilitated through corporate volunteer engagement and industry visits, helping learners gain insights into workplace expectations and the professional culture of the technology sector. CO-EXISTENCE OF HUMANS AND AI Persistent Systems is of the view that collaboration between human expertise and AI is a "force multiplier". As GenAI becomes integral to business workflows, it's driving faster decisions, greater scale, and more dynamic operations. In fact, according to McKinsey, 71 per cent of business leaders now report using GenAI in at least one function, up from 65 per cent in early 2024. "We follow a human-in-the-loop approach, where employees are involved in training models, prompt engineering, and validating outputs, ensuring AI remains contextually relevant, ethical, unbiased, and aligned with business goals. Our focus is on outcome-based learning. From customer interview coaching to internal mobility programs, we help employees apply AI-first thinking to solve real problems, bridging skill development with delivery impact," says Bhat. He says that across industries, roles are being redefined. Developers are moving beyond manual coding toward solution design, while business teams are using AI to personalize experiences and accelerate decisions. This shift empowers talent to focus on higher-value, creative, and strategic work. Ultimately, AI is elevating human potential, and that synergy is shaping more agile, future-ready workforces capable of delivering stronger outcomes in a dynamic, technology-first world.

Running on Ice: Europe's Cold Storage Sector Is Heating Up

OC&C Strategy Consultants has released a new report titled Unlocking Growth in the European Cold Storage Market: Four Strategic Trends Shaping the Future. They identified the four big trends that are coming through the cold chain industry as follows: Sustained Market Growth Driven by Structural Tailwinds According to OC&C, demand for outsourced cold storage is projected to grow 5–6% per year, fueled by rising frozen food consumption, producers outsourcing logistics, and regional supply chain shifts. Eastern Europe and Iberia are especially ripe for growth, outpacing more mature markets like Germany and Austria. 'Europe's cold chain is at an inflection point,' says the OC&C team. 'What was once a fragmented, low-tech sector is becoming increasingly strategic and tech-enabled.' Consolidation: Continued Opportunity Despite Maturity 40% of market capacity still lies with independent operators, suggesting ample headroom for further consolidation in European cold storage markets. The share of independent operators in the market is even higher in Southern, Central, and Eastern Europe. The independent operators portion of the market will continue to fuel M&A activity in the space as larger companies move to buy the capacity needed, instead of building it. Professionalisation of Customer Needs and Service Standards Cold storage customers are demanding more than just a place to park frozen pallets. As supply chains become more complex, expectations are rising: real-time visibility, ESG transparency, and tailored, regionalized service are quickly becoming the new norm. Operators that can't offer flexible, tech-enabled service risk being left behind. 'Success today is less about square footage and more about operational agility,' OC&C explains. Automation: A Growing but Selective Enabler Automated High-Bay (AHB) warehouses are gaining traction, especially where high volume and standardization make them feasible. These facilities promise efficiency and help address rising labor costs, but the report cautions against assuming one-size-fits-all. 'Automation is an enabler, not a universal solution,' OC&C points out. 'Fresh produce, for example, is still better suited to conventional sites.' The combination of these trends, growth, consolidation, higher expectations, and automation, makes this a critical moment for the cold chain. With inflationary pressure, regulatory shifts, and evolving food and pharma demands, strategic investment in the cold storage sector isn't just timely, it may be essential.
