Xavier Lucas' attorney denies alleged meeting with Miami amid Wisconsin lawsuit
The attorney for the player at the center of a first-of-its-kind transfer tampering lawsuit by the University of Wisconsin denied the allegations of a December meeting between the player and representatives of the University of Miami, On3 reported Saturday.
"Wisconsin's allegations that my client, Xavier Lucas, met with a Miami coach and prominent alumnus in December 2024 are false," said Lucas' attorney Darren Heitner, per On3.
The University of Wisconsin sued the University of Miami on Friday, formally accusing the Florida school of tampering with a football player under a financial contract with the Badgers.
Though Wisconsin's lawsuit only refers to the player as Student Athlete A, the subject of the case is cornerback Lucas, who left Wisconsin and enrolled at Miami over the winter without ever entering the transfer portal.
It was reported at the time that Wisconsin refused to put Lucas' name in the transfer portal. Lucas signed a two-year contract with the Badgers in December 2024 -- a deal that gave the football program non-exclusive rights to use his NIL but also prohibited him from committing to enroll or participate in athletics at another school.
Lucas enrolled at Miami in January.
Wisconsin's lawsuit alleges that a Miami staffer and a prominent alumnus of the school met with Lucas and his family and offered him money to transfer in December of 2024, which Heitner -- who is an adjunct professor of NIL at the University of Miami School of Law -- denied Saturday.
The decision to sue could become a watershed moment in the current era of college athletics. Never before has a university accused another of tampering with one of its athletes, who did not have contracts before the dawn of name, image and likeness rights this decade.
"While we reluctantly bring this case, we stand by our position that respecting and enforcing contractual obligations is essential to maintaining a level playing field," the University of Wisconsin said in a statement provided to ESPN on Friday.

To help map out the Bucks' chessboard, let's break down their tradeable assets and where they stand heading into a pivotal summer. Note: This ranking focuses only on players or assets under team control. That means no Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis, Ryan Rollins, Gary Trent Jr., Taurean Prince, or Jericho Sims, since they're not currently under contract. Untouchables Antetokounmpo and Lillard fall into this category for very different reasons. With Giannis, it's simple: You don't trade a two-time MVP who's still in his prime. Despite the endless noise about whether he could or should want out, the Bucks would never get fair value. If Rudy Gobert fetched five firsts and a swap, Mikal Bridges got five firsts and a swap, and Desmond Bane drew a deal of four firsts and a swap, imagine what it would take for Giannis—and even that wouldn't be enough. It's far smarter to retool around Giannis than to blow it all up and hope another generational talent falls in their lap in the next few decades. Unfortunately Lillard's injury looms large. No team is lining up to trade for a 35-year-old, undersized guard coming off an Achilles tear with $54 million owed next year. He's staying put by default. If the Price is Right The Bucks can trade their 2031 first-rounder at any time, while the 2032 pick won't be in play until after the 2025 draft. They should be cautious with these future picks—Giannis will be deep into his 30s by then, and trading those chips could leave the cupboard bare just as the window closes. Would Have to Blow Me Away Green's on a bargain deal at $2.3 million next season and looks poised for a breakout. His shooting, fit, and potential make him a valuable piece. He's not untouchable, but it would take an eye-popping offer for Milwaukee to part ways. Deal Sweeteners These are the pieces Milwaukee could throw in to tip the scales in a bigger deal. The swap rights, in particular, offer flexibility without surrendering outright picks—think of them as tools to grease the wheels without giving away the farm. As BrewHoop cap analyst Van Fayaz noted, swaps would work similarly to when Milwaukee included Khris Middleton in a theoretical swap for Kyle Kuzma: the acquiring team can swap Milwaukee's pick with the better of what remains after their obligations to New Orleans or Portland are met. Please Take Them Off My Hands The Bucks would love nothing more than to hit the eject button on Kuzma's contract or shed the final year of Connaughton's $9.4 million deal (he's reportedly picked up his player option for 2025-26). Unfortunately, Milwaukee doesn't have spare assets to package as sweeteners. Livingston's $2.2 million salary is non-guaranteed, and with a July 15 decision deadline looming, the Bucks shouldn't hesitate to move on if they need flexibility.

Kansas City (Missouri) mayor is optimistic Chiefs will stay put
The Chiefs supposedly have a June 30 deadline for accepting an offer from Kansas to help pay for a new domed stadium. On the other side of the border, more work needs to be done to finalize a plan for renovating Arrowhead Stadium, the team's long-time home. Kansas City (Missouri) mayor Quinton Lucas expressed hope on Sunday that the Chiefs will stay put, with a $1.15 billion renovation of their long-time home. 'I've had optimism all the time, and I think there are more and more reasons for that,' Lucas said, via Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star. 'I said [last summer] that I believe we'd have a compelling Missouri state offer. We've gotten to that. 'It took a little longer than perhaps some would have wanted. I think the local government conversation is something that continues to proceed, as well.' Lucas, who made his comments while in Kansas for a KC World Cup community event, conceded that a final deal for an Arrowhead renovation won't be in place before the Chiefs' deadline to accept the Kansas offer comes and goes. 'I frankly continue to hope that we have it resolved sooner rather than later,' Lucas said. 'The June 30 deadline set up by the state of Kansas may be a little tough for us, but we're going to make sure that we have a compelling offer to both teams in that time. 'Kansas City, and the state of Missouri, is where they need to be. In terms of where the offers are, I think it will be on the teams to decide how quickly they want to proceed.' The Chiefs moved to Kansas City in 1962, after surrendering Dallas to the NFL and the Cowboys. 'Kansas City, Missouri has made sense for 50 plus years,' Lucas said. 'It will continue to do so.' Will former Wisconsin star Chucky Hepburn be selected in the 2025 NBA draft?
All-American wing John Tonje isn't the only now-former Badger hoping to hear his name called during the 2025 NBA draft. Former Wisconsin star point guard Chucky Hepburn, who played his final collegiate season at Louisville, is among a large group of players currently on the outside looking in of two-round mock draft projections. Remember, there will only be 59 selections this year (instead of 60) after the New York Knicks were forced to forfeit their second-round pick. More specifically, CBSSports slots Hepburn just outside of its top 59 -- it has the veteran point guard at No. 77 in its latest NBA draft top 100 player ranking. Hepburn's stock is trending positively after a strong performance at the G League Elite Camp last month. He's looking to validate a breakout senior season with the Cardinals, which included 16.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game, plus shooting totals of 43% from the field, 33% from 3 and 84.4% from the free-throw line. Hepburn has worked out for the Toronto Raptors and Charlotte Hornets, according to RookieWire's Cody Taylor. While the 6-foot-2 point guard is currently slotted outside of the draft's two rounds, he appears to be a prime candidate to sign as an undrafted free agent. He'd then need a standout summer league and preseason to play his way onto an NBA roster. The former Badger brings a rare combination of excellence on the defensive end and as a floor general to the table. If he can't make an NBA roster immediately out of college, productive seasons in the G League or overseas could lead to a promotion. The NBA draft will be held on Wednesday (first round) and Thursday (second round) of this week. Hepburn appears to have a long shot chance to hear his name called during Thursday's second round.
